Last Day of Summer

Today was the last day of summer. Officially. School starts in less than ... well, let's do the math... I suck at math, so hold on while I count on my fingers...

OK...

In a little over 10 hours I will be gathering my two oldest kids up and taking them to the bus for school to start. Third and fourth grades. How the hell did that happen? Tukey doesn't officially start kindergarten till Wednesday, and he's another whole blog post in itself. Very needy lately, has been paying me 4 a.m. visits to my bed. "Mom, I'm scared." He's majorly internalizing this kindergarten stuff. Or maybe I am.

But, back to the last day of summer. It was pouring rain when I woke around 9:30, relishing in the last day to sleep in. Hubby had been to Home Depot and back probably three or four times by the time I got up. I had asked him to put some shelves and hooks up in the garage.

So he did. And I helped, and it looked great, and then he popped open a beer, and I grabbed a Zima, cuz you all know we've got the fridge in the garage now. Remember that debacle?

We sat out in our garage with our drinks. It was still raining on and off, mostly, very much on, all day long, and it's still raining. And remember, I don't drink on Sundays, right? Well, we sat out there, ate pizza, listened to CDs, and then called up some neighbors because we decided to have a margarita party in the garage.

Say it with me.... "We are so white-trash!"

We seriously sat outside on white plastic chairs in our garage watching the rain for like 6 hours today. It was so white-trashy fun! I loved it. We'd wave at neighbors, yell to little kids riding by, and half the time, the kids were inside playing so it was just hubby and me. At one point, I was like, "I am kind of bored from relaxing; I should go inside and do something."

So what did I do?

We called up some neighbors, I ran to the store, in the rain, to get margarita fixins' and chips and salsa and a bunch of frozen Mexican appetizers. Lost my wallet at the store, had to go back halfway home but fortunately, someone turned it in.

Came home, mixed up a batch of 'ritas. Had about six or seven neighbors over and about 11 kids who ran through the rain like it was the best day of their lives! We drank margaritas. Hubby got out the sawhorses and put a 2 x 4 atop them, and we set up a Mexican buffet.

It was great fun, and a terrific way to round out the summer. But let me tell you, as much as I am dreading the 7 a.m. wake-up call, I'm ready for school to start.

I'm ending this post here. I'm tired. But stay tuned later this week for a whole new Manic coming at ya. Yeah, yeah, I say that every time there's a turn in our schedule.

Oh well, you'll just have to wait and see...

Who else starts school tomorrow? Are you also kicking up your heels in joy?

PS--If you didn't have a chance to check in over the weekend, I also blogged about HSM2... and for those addicts like me, I just read in People that Zac and Vanessa date in real life!?!?!? OH MY!

Long time lurker here---but where HSM is involved, I just had to speak up. . .

If the Zac/Vanessa (or Zanessa, as I've heard them called) news just wasn't enough, the latest rumour is that our pretty Troy Bolton has dumped his singing sidekick for another: Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray. True or False? Who knows. Just. . . um, letting you know. Because it's, you know, really important.

(And yes, I'm just now realising how completely dorky it was to come out of the reader shadows to comment on this.)

I was all set to leave a comment about how I want to be your neighbor because your day sounded so fun, and then I was totally derailed by the Zac and Vanessa thing. Really?

I can't believe you didn't invite me!!!

YAY for first day of school! But poor Tukey. And his poor mommy, who I bet will be bawling on Wednesday :)

That sounds like a fun last day of summer. My kids start school today too, but I spent my last day getting school supplies (major procrastinator here) and cleaning the house.

The garage party sounds much better.

Oh, Lord. When my nephew was born my brother in law and his wife held the Christening party in the GARAGE on the coldest, rainiest June day Cleveland had ever seen. They didn't want people (guests, family, old grannies) getting the carpets dirty in their new house. We sat on folding chairs in the garage. We still laugh about it. Well, they don't, but the rest of us do. Happy School. You know how envious I am. We have to wait until the 30th.

Down here STL we attended a last day of summer BBQ and feasted on margaritas as well. Although, only the HS Freshman started classes today (so I had one of three go to school)...everyone else joins in tomorrow. Viva school!

Goodness, here in NY, my students don't come until Sept. 5th. It's awesome that we have until after Labor Day to enjoy the summer, but the downside is that we don't get out until June 18th.

I know nothing about HSM, but I think I saw on The Insider or one of those other celebrity news shows that those two kids were dating. I only know who the guy is because apparently he'll be playing Ren in the new Footloose, one of my all-time favorite movies.

Happy First Day of School! Now, there is lots of time to write!

I wanna be your neighbor. Our neighbors are old and crotchety...I don't think they even like us and I know they don't like the kids.

NO! They can't remake Footloose!

BOYCOTT!

I wish I lived in your neighborhood!!

We've got one more week before school starts here. But they may as well be in school. Katie's babysitting every day this week and Taylor is amazingly absent while still in the house as 15-year-olds are. Though he shows up when he's hungry.

Regarding Zac--I like the idea of him and Vanessa dating-I think that's cutey, young lovish, but will be very mad if he's already dumped her for something bigger and better!

And I LOVED, LOVED Footloose when it first came out. The remake would be cool. Wonder who would play Ariel... anyone know?

Swish, you know your invitation is one that never expires!

It was so fun being white trashy garage beer-drinking folk last night (even tho it was 'ritas!)...

Travis, yes I do need to do the writing stuff now!!!!

A 'rita party sounds like SO much fun! Sadly, I realized over the weekend that most of the friends I have right now are in AA. It's good for them, but sad for me. Granted, I drink so rarely that it doesn't really matter on most days. But an occasional 'rita party would be lovely!

Anyway, just wanted to let you know that not only did I get to see HSM for the first time this weekend, I also managed to watch HSM2, or at least as much as possible when wrangling a very mobile 7 1/2 month-old. It's like a modern-day Grease! (Don't mean to insult anyone here, but that's the way I see it, and I loved Grease and liked Grease 2.)

Man, I'm wordy today! Needless to say, I really enjoyed them both. :)

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Andrea--it is like a modern-day Grease except the "message" in Grease is soooo foul! You have to smoke and tramp yourself up to get the guy you want? There's pregnancy scares in Grease, drinking... oh my, I am totally turning into a geezer! I just like that HSM is so freaking PURE, and there's really nothing pure in this day and age, so that's why I like it so much!

I WISH my kids started school. I still have 3 effin' years left!

Zinn--while I am excited to be getting back into a school routine, a mom and I were talking today (both of our youngest will start Kindergarten on Wed)... we decided we wished we hadn't wished those younger years away so badly. Seriously. It makes me extremely sad, almost emotionally ill, to think that I don't have that time back again... (Minus poopy diapers and sleepless nights). Just miss them needing me so much, and LOVING me sooo much. They still love ME, but they now love their friends, sports, dong things without me, and that's the sad part.

Big Cubby starts Kindergarten next Monday. Part of me is so ready for him to go and part of me is a little sad. This week we have to go to Kindergarten orientation. I think Little Cubby is going to be upset BC is going. He will miss his brother.

whatever happened to the first day of school being the day after labour day? if my "ou" in labour hasn't indicated... I'm here in Canada, is this an American thing? Is that what you do? poor souls, first you're stuck with Dubya and now they take away two weeks of vaca? Crazy-ness I say.

Oh right, so my two cents on this Zac Effron thing... numero uno, he wears too much make-up, so i tend to think of Vanessa as a beard (as bearded as you could be at 17 I suppose). Numero two, this thing with him and Nikki, the hairspray girl. That rumour started after they made out on Much Music (canada's answer to MTV, seriously, youtube them on much thats quite the kiss), he was with Vanessa at the premiere of HSM last week and therefore "together."

I read way too much people.com, perez and all those other gossips.

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Anon, I am soo going to google them--I want to know more about this relationship!

I agree also--wayyy too much makeup on the boy! Wayyyy too much!

Eatmis--you live pretty close--you can always ditch the city and come out here with us white-trash-garage-partying suburbanites! : )

So, how was the first day of school for the kids?

Why don't I have neighbors like you? Ours mow all the time thus fueling my feelings of yard guilt

I thought I posted something incredibly witty here but either I screwed up or the internet did. I'm gonna go with choice c, the butler did it.

I actually googled the whole Zac/Vanessa thing like a school kid still reading Tiger Beat! What is wrong with me? But my 2 cents is that I think the whole Nikki and Zac thing was just an act and if he is dating anyone it's Vanessa. You know he did show up in Vanessa's music video as her boyfriend...

School starts in less than a week for both my kids and for me. I am the world's worst procrastinator and am still not ready for anything! No new school clothes, shoes, supplies, knapsacks, anything! I just wrote a long post about procrastinating on my blog and decided to write about it some more on everyone else's blogs too! So is anyone else out there not ready for school or is it just me?

I guess I never looked at Grease being "foul", but I guess you're right. Hmmm.
