THE MISTRESS'S REVENGE by TAMAR COHEN

Congratulations
Melissa tmd636
Please email me your full name and mailing address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com so I can send you your book!

Well, the books are back and today’s book up for grabs is The Mistress’s Revenge, which Bookseller had called “A cracking debut … very Fatal Attraction with a clever twist at the end.”

When Clive decides to end his and Sally’s five-year love affair to focus on his wife and family, Sally becomes a bit obsessed, not ready to say, “okay, we’ve had five good years, maybe I should focus on my own kids and lover now.” Nope, she decides she’s going to stalk Clives son, and follow Clive’s wife and daughter on FB (not that I’ve ever checked out the exes on FB – HEY, there’s NOTHING wrong with THAT!!!)

Told in journal format, it does take a while to get into it, and there are some racy scenes about their illicit affair, and yeah, Sally goes a little crazy, but does she deserve the revenge she seeks? I mean, come on, Clive TOLD her he was breaking it off with her. It’s not like she has to go boil a bunny or anything, right? Ha ha ha.

Here’s the official blurb for the book:

For five years, Sally and Clive have been lost in a passionate affair. Now he has dumped her to devote himself to his wife and family, and Sally is left in freefall.

It starts with a casual stroll past his house, and popping into the brasserie where his son works. Then Sally starts following Clive’s wife and daughter on Facebook. But that’s alright, isn’t it? These are perfectly normal things to do. Aren’t they?

Not since Fatal Attraction has the fallout from an illicit affair been exposed in such a sharp, darkly funny, and disturbing way: The Mistress’s Revenge is a truly exciting fiction debut. After all, who doesn’t know an otherwise sane woman who has gone a little crazy when her heart was broken?

Here’s an EXCERPT.
So, I usually keep with a theme for the books but I’m not going to ask a cheater/stalker question. Since it is Halloween, and since Fatal Attraction was a pretty scary movie, to enter to win this book, tell me one of your most scary movies? Mine are either Misery or Cujo!

Biggest Slacker Ever? Nah!

You might think I'm the biggest slacker ever but truly, I have legitimate excuses for not posting a single book this week. And I do feel really horrible about it but there were many obstacles that got in the way. Finally, FINALLY I can laugh about them, but this past week was NOT a very good one!

First of all, I had to visit the rectal and colon doctor, and seriously, when I walked in there, OMG, what a bunch of assholes! (OK, I could NOT resist THAT JOKE!). And SERIOUSLY, I did go to the booty doctor, but ALL IS FINE down yonder and I didn't have to do anything, and that's all I need to say about this little problem, but if any of you have had babies, and have pushed THAT hard, and know what it feels like to have ... well, never mind. But that was the start of my week.

THEN, I simultaneously wished my son a happy 14th birthday and then got a migraine so severe I ended up in bed and vomiting for two full days, and part of the time when I was sleeping on the floor (because you know how the floor is cool and comforting and you need to be by the toilet, and you have the pillow and blanket next to you?), well, when I got up at one point, I threw my back out. So not only was I having a migraine and vomiting, I also couldn't stand fully erect.

Vicodin no longer alleviates pain for me, and there's no way I'm going to take two, and taking pills were not working because I would puke them up so I had to push through the pain of it all. Sleep was the only thing that would help, and every time I fell asleep I had these crazy hallucinogenic dreams where I swear I created all sorts of mutant animals and I told my children stuff that when I woke up I couldn't remember if I told them these things in real life or in my dreams. I also dreamed I was in a building and my brain was having these crazy freaky incidents that probably really do happen to people who have migraines in real life and the building was spinning like a carousel and I couldn't stop it and other people in the building were walking normally but I wasn't and I was trying to stop from weaving, like I was drunk but wasn't really.

It was so freaky.

When I could finally get out of bed, I couldn't look into bright light, go near a computer (words are still bothering me, and reading and watching TV pains me), loud noises make me want to cringe. I didn't eat for a day and a half (the one plus!).

So that was how I spent some of the most recent days.

THEN, my good neighbor was having surgery and I promised to help her with her twin babies who are just one year old. And she really needed my help, so although my brain was better and I could now eat, my back was still messed up. With the help of Diva (who I let stay home from school because she had a half-day anyway), we went and helped my neighbor with the babies.

And then here we are and it's Friday.

And I didn't have a chance at all to put up any of this week's books and I thought about them every single day and wondered if you guys thought, "Where the heck is today's book?" or "Did she bail on us and the contest?" I did not! I'm sorry about this!

We've got these books left and come hell or high water, I am going to do my best to get them to you next week!

Party by Tom Leveen
The Very Thought of You by Rosie Alison
The Mistress's Revenge by Tamar Cohen
Things We Didn't Say by Kristina Riggle
Confessions of a Counterfeit Farm Girl & 300 Acres And No Place to Hide by Susan McCorkindale

I'm going to choose the winners for all the previous books RIGHT NOW so go back to see if you've won any of them, and then next week we'll finalize ALL these books, and before mid November, we'll have a grand prize winner for ALL of the books. Thanks for your patience you guys. You've been great! xoxo

MICE by GORDON REECE

Congratulations
Christina L
Please send me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com
so you can receive your book!

Here’s another book that I would have never found on my own and am really excited to bring to you. Full disclosure here, I’ve only gotten through the first couple of chapters (WAIT! You ask? You mean YOU HAVEN’T HAD TIME TO READ ALL OF THESE BOOKS??? SHAME ON YOU!!!) …

Believe me, if I could I would lay on my couch and read all of these amazing books cover to cover all day long, but then I couldn’t be here telling you about them or even be offering them to you. So I’m doing the best I can. From what I have read so far though, this one is going to be a heart racer, and as I said, it’s not a usual one I would have ventured to pick up, so I’m always excited to find that needle in the haystack book that grabs my attention. This is another one of those kinds of books.

MICE by Gordon Reece is about a mother and daughter who have appeared to have been bullied and maybe abused for most of their lives (divorce for the mom, some bitchy frenemies for the teen daughter) so they retreat to the quiet countryside in a tiny home where they can be safe and no longer victimized by society. Until one night when intruders arrive.

However, the tables are turned and instead of becoming the prey, it sounds like Shelley and her mother get a set of balls and take control of the situation! Rock on! Bring it! Grab that knife on the kitchen table and kill those mutha … well, you know. Maybe that’s what they do. I don’t know. Maybe they tie ‘em up and torture them. Maybe they pull their fingernails off and make ‘em cry like little babies… I don’t know but the thought totally intrigues me!

I’m looking forward to finding out who these middle-of-the-night predators are and what happens when the Mice don’t take the bait.

Here’s some commentary from Gordon Reece on MICE from his website. This one is going to be a psychological thriller for sure. So, do you want to read it or what? You bet you do!

Since this one includes a plot line of bullying, let’s talk a little bit about that. My two older kids signed pledges today at school to be respectful and to not bully kids. I hope they know that goes for not bullying each other in the family. To enter to win, tell me if you were bullied as a kid? Do you remember bullying anyone? I remember not being so nice to a couple girls – I don’t know if you’d call it bullying, but I do wish I had been nicer. What about you? Have you had any personal experiences with bullying, whether it was you or your child?

Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com
so I can send you your book!

Here’s a book I know a lot of you are going to love because I’ve done doggy books before and many of you go crazy over them! And what an adorable cover, and oh, yeah, did I mention that many of my favorite authors took part in this anthology?

It’s called I’m Not the Biggest Bitch in This Relationship: Hilarious, Heartwarming Tales about Man’s Best Friend from America’s Favorite Humorists, which was edited by Wade Rouse and includes essays from Sarah Pekkanen, Jen Lancaster, Jenny Gardiner, Beth Harbison, Laurie Notaro, Caprice Crane, Stephanie Klein, Alice Bradley, and a forward by Chelsea Handler’s Dog, Chunk. Many other fine authors contributed to this anthology, and you can win it here on MaNiC MoMMy.

If you’ve got a pet, whether it’s a dog, cat or any other type (and I know many of you do, because DAMN, you all let ‘em sleep in your freakin’ beds!), tell me how you let them rule a part of your lives.

If you don’t have a pet, tell me something else interesting about you, because if you’re not a pet owner, you’re still an interesting person. Oh, come on, YES YOU ARE! You HAVE VALUE! SURE YOU DO! I KNOW YOU DO!

BED by DAVID WHITEHOUSE

Congratulations
Faithspage!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com
so I can send you your book!

First of all, I PROMISE to have winners chosen for previous books by Wednesday of this week. Thank you for your patience! In the meantime, here's another great book for you to enter to win!

Here’s a book I have been waiting for a chance to read and I’ve finally found the time to get to it. I’m about half-way through it and it’s mesmerizing! BED is about a boy who becomes a man who decides at the age of twenty-five that the end result of adulthood isn’t worth much so he takes to his bed and stays there. And doesn’t get out. He becomes the fattest man in the world and becomes famous for it.

Malcolm, from what I have read so far, was an odd yet intelligent young boy, but had a penchant for being uncomfortable in his clothing, so he would strip naked at the strangest of places, completely mortifying his parents and younger brother, who is the shy and sweet narrator in the book. As Malcolm grows older and stranger, he becomes more withdrawn. Even so, he finds a girlfriend, Lou, and his younger brother finds that he is drawn to Lou as well. She is kind and compassionate and brings light into the family.

I am finding that in the reading of this book, I am expecting a major surprise ending, not sure if it will be sad or happy, but am definitely positive this is going to be a book that will stay with me for a very long time. It’s one of those books that I had to work up to reading, and I keep thinking about it when I’m not immersed in it.

BED is David Whitehouse’s first novel. It was the inaugural winner of the 'To Hell with Prizes' award in 2010 for best unpublished novel. It is also being adapted for film.

Here is an official blurb:

Reminiscent of such novels as A Confederacy of Dunces and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Bed is a darkly funny and surprisingly tender debut novel about two brothers, one of whom refuses to leave his bed on his twenty-fifth birthday.

Mal Ede, a child of untamed manners and unbounded curiosity, is the eccentric eldest son of an otherwise typical middle-class family. But as the wonders of childhood fade into the responsibilities of adulthood, Mal’s spirits fade too. On his twenty-fifth birthday, disillusioned, Mal goes to bed—back to his childhood bed—and never emerges again.

Narrated by Mal’s shy, diligent younger brother, BED details Mal’s subsequent extreme and increasingly grotesque transformation: immobility and a gargantuan appetite combine, over the course of two decades, to make him the fattest man in the world. Despite his seclusion and his refusal to explain his motivations, Mal’s condition earns him worldwide notoriety and a cult of followers convinced he is making an important statement about modern life. But Mal’s actions will also change the lives of his haunted parents, his brother and the woman they both love, Lou.

Here is the stunning trailer for the video:

When Mr. MaNiC and I were first married and shopping for a bed, we bought a Queen. My parents told us we were crazy to buy a queen. We were like, “No! We love our queen! We want to be close! We want to cuddle! We LOVE each other!” Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. Mr. MaNiC is six-foot-five. I am five-foot-nine but shrinking every day. We have three children. A queen was the stupidest investment we ever made. Well, not really because now our son sleeps on it, but that’s not big enough for him because he is six-foot-two at age 13.

To win BED, tell me if you sleep in a Twin, Queen, King, Bunk, Blow-Up, Trundle, Couch, Lazy-Boy Chair. Tell me the story of your bed, and you’ll be entered to win this incredible novel by David Whitehouse

TRICKS and TREATS

For those of you who've missed some of the last couple of books in the Fall Fab Book Giveaway, here are the links so you can easily click to read about them and enter to win ...

One Flight Up

What Came First

Falling Under

Pinch Me

Dogs, Dogs, and More Dogs

There's still a few more days to go and enter on each post above to win those books, and remember, if you enter each post, that gains you MORE entries toward the end of the Fall Fab Giveaway to win ALL the books at the end, which we are nearing. We've got about nine books (or two weeks left to go)! That's the TREAT part of this post.

The next part is about TRICKS, or Halloween ...

I figure I've had about, between my three kids, 35 Halloween costumes. For the life of me, I can't remember them all. This upsets me greatly, because I used to be able to rattle off all of their costumes year by year, and say what they wore. I mean, I remember some of them. I know for sure that AJer's first Halloween he was nothing because he was five days old and I had been home from the hospital only one day. I was a naive mom who had written a note on the door that said, "Baby Sleeping, Please Don't Ring Bell."

Of course, all of the children rang the bell - none of THEM could read! And of course, a newborn baby wouldn't be DISTURBED by a freakin' doorbell! A new mom lesson quickly learned.

As I sit here and write, I can't even remember what he was dressed as for his very first real Halloween. WHAT KIND OF MOTHER AM I? OMG. Didn't I dress him up? Oh! Thank goodness, I just remembered! He was a clown. Phew, I am not going to hell for forgetting. And he was a very cute clown, and I think he had a lollipop and loved it.

His second official Halloween, which would have actually been his third, but the first doesn't count because he was five days old, Ajers was joined by his sister, who was six months old, and I had the perfect solution for them. I dressed them as an angel and a devil. It was the perfect combination. And here's where I show my age. Back THEN, there really wasn't digital cameras. OK, maybe they were just starting to get popular, but I didn't have one yet, and I certainly didn't know how to upload photos to a computer, so you're not getting to see a picture here. Imagine it, if you'd like. Or, I could go find a photo, take a picture of it and then post it. But that would be a lot of work.

Through the years, we've had a pirate, Tigger, a fairy, and boy, was that fairy ever pissed off - I do have video footage of that one and one day she is going to get to view that and see just how fiercely mad she was at age two. However, the very next year Diva was THRILLED to wear that same costume, so it worked out well in the end. We've had girl rocker stars, a Woody, Spiderman, two Hulks one year -- that was very cute, a small Hulk and a medium Hulk. A fuzzy Big Bird graced our presence once ... I love the years where WE moms get to decide what the kiddos will wear.

Unfortunately, my babes are older now. They still want the candy, they just don't want to work as hard to get it. Ajers will go out as something goofy. At almost 14, they still want to go around the neighborhood with their buddies, but he wants nothing to do with dressing up. Diva Darling, however, bought a masquerade dress and mask and will put on gobs of makeup and do her hair all up and pretend to be someone famous. Any chance to dress up and act older than she is. And Tukey, who is just 10 ... when I asked him what he wanted to dress up as? He said he might just put on a jersey and be a sports guy. Or after a few minutes of thinking, he said, "Or maybe I'll just take my pillowcase out and go as a candy collector?"

Now that's original.

I don't know if they do "Ghosting" in your neighborhood, but they do in mine. And they did in my last neighborhood in Chicago too. The first time we experienced it in Chicago, I freaked out. I thought maybe I should call the police because strangers were giving us candy and what if it was poisoned? Later, I found out it's a fun tradition that neighbors do. We've taken to doing it too. We haven't been "Booed" or "Ghosted" yet this Halloween season, but we're always on the lookout. It's mostly fun to catch the person doing the tricking. You can find extra fun ways to "Ghost" people in your neighborhood over here at the Fresh Takes site. And if you've got a fun family story to share while you're there, do so. You'll be entered to win a $50 gift card and will have a chance to have your story or family featured on the site!

And yes, in case you're wondering, I get dressed up for Halloween too! MaNiC MoMMy can get pretty scary!

ONE FLIGHT UP by SUSAN FALES-HILL

Congratulations
TaraUB!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com
so I can send you your book!

Susan Fales-Hill is an accomplished writer who has  not only written novels but I was surprised to find out she also wrote for some of my favorite TV shows back in the day – The Cosby Show and A Different World. I’m excited to bring you One Flight Up, which The New York Post calls “A chick lit masterpiece that leaves Jackie Collins in the dust!” …

There’s Abby Rosenfeld Adams, a Jewish gallery owner married to her Wasp college sweetheart, Monique Dawkins-Dubois, gynecologist and card carrying member of Harlem’s thriving Buppie-ocracy, and Esme Santiago Talbot, a Columbian heiress married to the All-American boy next door. When India, the most straight-laced of them all, learns that her friends are considering straying from their partners, she is dismayed. That is, until India’s ex-fiance, the love of her life, the destroyer of her heart, and the best sex ever, comes back into her life – and she finds herself caught between the dependable man she thought was her future and the man she never quite let go of.

To win One Flight Up, tell me if you and some of your best girlfriends could sneak away somewhere for a quick vacation, where would you choose to go? Some of my friends and I are going to Vegas in November! (Not my first choice – my first choice would be a beach destination, but my first choice really isn’t a place I want to put on a bathing suit either!)

WHAT CAME FIRST by CAROL SNOW

Congratulations
Sherry V!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com
so I can send you your book!

This is the third book in a blast of four in a row this week. Make sure to enter to win them all!

What Came First

Carol Snow

I don’t know how I JUST discovered author Carol Snow but I’m so glad that I did. Her latest novel, What Came First (out last week!) is a delightful book about marriage, love, sperm donors, and … chickens in the backyard? Hmmm….

Here’s a blurb:

Vanessa wants just one thing for her twenty-ninth birthday: an engagement ring from her longtime boyfriend, Eric. But when the ring turns out to be a mix CD and Eric turns out to be a guy who doesn't want to get married or have children, Vanessa considers a new path to having a family.

When Wendy and her husband, Darren, couldn't have children the old- fashioned way, a sperm donor seemed like the perfect solution. She never imagined she'd have out-of-control twins who'd drive her to cookie binges and scrapbooking while Darren escaped into the virtual world of computer games.

Single and career-driven, Laura didn't need a man to have a baby - at least not one that she ever met. Thanks to an anonymous donor, she shares her life with her adored eight-year-old son, Ian. She'll do anything for Ian - even fill their backyard with a bunch of noisy chickens. But the one thing Ian really wants is something Laura's never been able to give him: a sibling.

Now, to grant Ian's wish, Laura starts a search that will not only change her life but Vanessa's and Wendy's as well...

Take a sneak peek at an excerpt here.

To enter to win this book, answer this question: What do YOU think came first? Usually it’s my husband! Thank you, thank you! I’ll be here til Friday!

I kill me.

Falling Under is a fiercely intense book; it takes hold of you and demands that you keep reading. Danielle Younge-Ullman's debut absolutely does not read as if it were a debut - Falling Under is a book that takes reading to another level. This sexually intense novel provokes thought, brings brilliant artistic visuals to the mind, and will have you ripping through the pages, fascinated all the way through to the amazing ending.

When Falling Under debuted in 2008, I interviewed Danielle for BettyConfidential.
Here is part of that interview:

Danielle, what's the elevator pitch you'd use to describe your book?

Falling Under is an emotional roller coaster of a book about a reclusive young artist whose past starts to catch up with her when she falls in love. It's gritty, sexy and raw, with complicated characters and a wry sense of humor. The story touches on a number of issues - everything from the difficulty of having faith when everything and everyone you count on is falling apart to the powerful draw of inappropriate men and the use of sex to punish oneself for crimes real or imagined. My heroine, Mara Foster, is equal parts courageous and neurotic, and the book contains two interwoven stories, one in first person and the other in the rarely used second person.

What was the first moment of inspiration for you to begin writing Falling Under?

I don't actually remember the first moment, but my first attempt at a book (the unpublished one sitting in my drawer) was a rather frothy, fun kind of book with some deeper, darker subplots. In the end, it was those subplots I found most interesting and felt were my best work, so I knew with my next book I wanted to go in a more serious direction, though I really felt it was important to keep some humor as well.

Also, I wanted to write about someone who has the fears and anxieties many of us have, but multiplied by a thousand. So as I was pondering these things, suddenly I had a vision of Mara (my protagonist), young and vibrant and talented, but stuck in her house, haunted by the past and afraid of the future. And then I thought, what happens when someone like this falls in love?

Falling Under is really sexy and sensual, but in a very intense, good way. Were those scenes very difficult to write?

I had a lot of fun writing the sex scenes, but it did take some effort to get them right. The sex in Falling Under is intrinsic to the story and to Mara's emotional journey, but I didn't want it to be gratuitous ...It's interesting - I find readers are coming away with the impression that there is more detail in the sex scenes in Falling Under than there actually is because of the way I use language in those scenes. I use rhythm and repetition and suggestion in a way that, I think, provokes the imagination - but after the initial set-up of a sex scene, I leave the specifics to the imagination. That is a tough balance to strike, but I enjoyed the challenge.

Mara seems like such a sad person, yet the reader roots for her and wants her to be well. Was she a difficult character to create?

Honestly, I think there's a bit of Mara in so many of us. We live in anxious times, and so many of us, especially women, live with a ton of worry and anxiety. I am a constant worrier and someone who can easily go to the worst-case scenario in my mind, so to create Mara, I just imagined someone with the same tendency but with a much more traumatic personal history, bigger obstacles. It really wasn't difficult to create her - she kind of just arrived.

I absolutely LOVED something about each and every male character in your book, from art instructor Caleb to sexy, curly-haired Hugo. Seriously, if I could take a piece from each of them and make me a man-sandwich ... Was there one you preferred out of the bunch, and if so, why?

I have to admit I have a thing for the more complicated guys in Mara's life - Caleb and Erik in particular. It's not that I think either of them is the best influence in her life or should end up with her, but I just enjoy writing those characters. And Erik ... well ... he started out as just sexy and a bit dangerous but became so much more. He is the one I cried over as I wrote.

Thanks Danielle for taking the time to answer these questions!

I’ve got four books in a row coming your way this week so be on top of it and check back every day! You can always go back to make sure there’s not a winner highlighted on the top of the post. If not, go ahead and enter to win that book!

Pinch Me

By Adena Halpern

When author Laura Dave tells you she has a friend who’s written a book and you should really check it out, well then, heck yeah, you’re gonna check it out. So this next book comes highly recommended from one of my favorite authors. I haven’t had a chance to read the whole thing yet, but from what I’ve read so far, it’s a fun quick fairy-tale read and I’m hoping for a happy ending!

PINCH ME by Adena Halpern

From the first chapter, atop of the Eiffel Tower, you’re taken to the most perfect place in the world for an engagement, with the most perfect guy … but … a family curse gets in the way of their happiness…

LILY MARRIED THE MAN OF HER DREAMS.THEN SHE WOKE UP.“Never marry a man unless he’s short, bald, fat, stupid, and treats you badly.” That is the advice that twenty-nine-year-old Lily Burns has heard her entire life from her grandmother Dolly and her mother, Selma. Despite this, when she meets Gogo, the handsome, successful pediatrician who treats her like a queen, she has no choice but to let her heart take over. When she agrees to marry him, Dolly and Selma are inconsolable. They decide it’s time to tell her the truth: their family is cursed. If she marries for love, there will be unimaginable consequences.

Nevertheless, Lily and Gogo elope. Unable to believe her good fortune, Lily asks Gogo to pinch her—to make sure all this isn’t just a dream. The moment he does, Lily finds herself transported back to the house she lived in when she was single. Gogo is gone. When Lily tracks him down, she finds that he’s married to someone else and has no memory of her. In this modern fairy tale, Lily must find a way to break the curse and turn her nightmare back into a dream come true.

Read the First Chapter Here.

Adena Halpern is also the author of Target Underwear and a Vera Wang Gown (how AWESOME is THAT title?), The Ten Best Days of My Life, and 29 (Gosh, I wish I was 29 again!). You can learn more about Adena and her other books at her website here.

To win Pinch Me, tell me YOUR favorite fairy tale or something YOU dream of having happen someday. Obviously, I dream of having my OWN books published one day.

Homesickness

Not a book title. A feeling. Of homesickness. It's what I have currently. I don't know if it's because if I was back in Illinois right now, the weather would be brisk and clean, I would be watching the tree in my front yard turn the colors of red, then orange, then yellow. I remember being in my living room, year after year and thinking how it would look if I took a picture of that tree every day of the year -- I loved that tree and how it would change every single day and yet, every year it would turn and change and go from colorful to bare and snow-covered to full and green again.

That doesn't happen here in Arizona.

Also, not happening here in Arizona is the gaggle of girlfriends in my old neighborhood. We'd all stand at the bus stop in our jammies, gloved hands grasping coffee cups. None of us cared that we were in our jammies. It was the joke, who bothered to put on a bra that day? We were a family of sorts. Bundled and huddled together to keep warm while our children laughed and waited for Mr. Pickles, the most awesome bus driver in the world.

The kids would get on the bus, and we'd stand outside for a while longer, as long as we could, and laugh and chat, then be on our way, but we knew we'd talk again. We were a neighborhood family. I knew I would see these women later that morning, either through a walk, or at the gym, or we'd go for coffee, or have lunch we'd run into each other at the grocery store. This group of women had become my family there. It was the midwest. This is how we did things. We were a neighborhood connected. We had bonded, we were a sisterhood. I knew that no matter what, I could comfortably go to any one of their homes, ring the bell, and go flop onto their couch, raid their fridge, fall into their arms and cry if I needed a good cry.

Here. Only two, maybe three people can I do that with. And I've been here almost a year and a half. I need an extended family here. People are different. Or maybe I'm older. People have made their connections. They're busy. They don't have the time. Or maybe I'm not making the effort? I'm not trying hard enough. But it's too hard. No one is close enough. No one is friendly enough. Maybe I'm not friendly enough? Either way, it's exhausting to miss friends this much. It's disheartening to see the people here as I see them. I can see right through them. They're superficial. Not the ones I care about. Not the ones I want to get to know.

And of course, I have no family here. Family these days, are all over the place. It's just how it is. Like in this example, like this woman's choice to move away from her family. I didn't choose this. We had to go. I didn't want to. I don't know where I'll end up. I never thought it would be here, out west. I always thought if anything, we'd be back to the east, where my two younger children were born. I'm glad I have my internet family. Truly. Thank you all for being a part of my daily life. I feel so connected to you all in more ways than you can possibly know.

OK, enough pouting. Thanks for listening. More books, less whining next week! xo

First up is The Best of Today's Dogg where all sales benefit animal rescue and adoption. It's a charming colorful book with cartoons of all things dogs.

Next is Dogphoria by Jim Dratfield, which is a 100-paged, hard back book of gorgeous black and white photos. Whimsical dogs are paired up with unique quotes to match the pictures. Actress Laura Dern has said of photographer Jim Dratfield's work: "Jim is a master at capturing the soul of a dog in a photograph."

These books are perfect for the dog lover and make great coffee-table books, birthday or holiday gifts!

You can enter to win both books here by telling me what you think is the most unique animal in the world and what you would name that animal -- haha, you thought I was gonna ask a DOG question didn't you?

I'm going to say I love flamingos, because I DO, and I would name my Flamingo Florence. PS--DO NOT name your animal like Dorothy the Dog or Henry the Hamster just because I went with Florence the Flamingo... get more creative than I did! hahah.

MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN by CHAD KULTGEN

Congratulations
CANative!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com so I can send you your book!

By Chad Kultgen

This one will get you talking. And I’m coming right out there and saying it’s not for the faint at heart, or however that saying goes. There’s a lot of sex in this one, and it’s a bit on the pornographic side. The first line is raunchy. I’m telling you like it is. Because stuff like Chad writes happens. If you’re brave enough to read a book like this, whether you agree with it or not, well, that’s what books are about. To get you thinking. There is a shock value to Chad Kultgen’s books. Maybe that’s why I like them. I don’t know. This is definitely out of the realm of the usual women’s fiction books I promote here. I like to shake things up.

This is one that’ll shake it up. If you're curious about the book more and want to have a discussion in the comment section, please ask questions -- I'll be happy to talk about it there.

Read the reviews and make the decision for yourself.

Here’s the amazon review I put up for Men, Women & Children

I love Chad Kultgen's books. Yes, they may not be for everyone, but what I love about his writing is that he tells it like it is, and it's the real world. I have a son in eighth grade, and a daughter going in seventh, and I am very open with them. I am sure that the stuff that Chad writes about in Men, Women, & Children is happening in the real world today. I'm positive his "fiction" is fact and anyone who berates him for his writing must be crazy or in denial about the world around us. It's fiction but it's real. That's all I can say.

There is s#xting, there is pornography, young kids do the things that Chad writes about in his novels. I've been a fan of Chad's since The Average Adult Male and always, always look forward to his books. In fact, as I was reading Men, Women & Children, I could see this one as an HBO series - this is some great stuff, there's a sad element to his characters too, but it's real life, and real characters, but that's what I get in his novels -- the realness of what he writes. Anyone who does not like his work just doesn't live in the now.

To enter to win, tell me what you think about teens today – do you think technology (cell phones, Facebook, inappropriate shows in TV, internet access) is making them grow up faster than they deserve to be growing up. I definitely do. They have more access to things we never did. That’s one of the reasons I’m so open with my children. Because if they’re not going to hear it straight from me, they’re going to hear it from their friends and other kids, and they’re not going to hear the truth! That’s why I’m always talking to my kids about EVERYTHING!

If you don’t think this book is your thing, enter anyway, and give it to a man! A guy will LOVE to read it! : )

WITH A LITTLE LUCK by CAPRICE CRANE

Congratulations
Stereo Queen Bee!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com so I can send you your book, and wow, you won two books in a ROW! This one and Damn Honeymoon, thanks to Random.org (and yes, I double/triple checked)! Talk about lucky!

“Romantic, poignant and funny—this book is a lucky find for lit fans. Caprice Crane is a nimble and gifted storyteller.”
— Diablo Cody, Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Juno

Caprice Crane, has written for 90210 and Melrose Place and is also a talented screenwriter. She is the successful author of Family Affair, Forget About It, and Stupid and Contagious. (You’ll definitely want to check out ALL of these great books.)

Today you can enter to win her latest With a Little Luck! Here’s the book blurb:

Los Angeles radio DJ Beryl “Berry” Lambert, whose name means luck, doesn’t much believe in it—although, thanks to her dear old gambling dad, she’s a bit superstitious, certain that everything happens for a reason.

When it comes to love, though, she could use a little luck. Two disastrous relationships back-to-back can mean only one thing to a woman who knows that everything good or bad happens in threes: A third Mr. Wrong is imminent. But fellow DJ Ryan Riley goes against the odds. Their on-air battle of the sexes is a hit for the station and sparks some serious heat after hours. Is their relationship doomed by the numbers—or is a girl who leaves nothing to chance finally ready to gamble?

Read the first 17 pages here.

Trust me, you’re not going to want to stop reading once you get through the excerpt!

PS—the pilot of her first book, Stupid and Contagious, has just been sold to NBC, and Caprice is working on the script for that now!

Oh, also, if you’re on Twitter, follow Caprice there @capricecrane – she’s listed as one of the top 50 funniest tweeters around.

To win Caprice’s With A Little Luck, tell me something superstitious that you believe in or that you act upon. For me, I am partial to even numbers. Odd numbers in anything just tend to creep me out. Doesn’t matter what it is – seats on an airplane, putting in a time on the microwave, paying for something. If it’s an even number, I always feel like I’m luckier. All three of my kids were born on even days of the month, so that makes me feel lucky. See, totally weird, right!

What’s your weird superstition?

IF IT WAS EASY, THEY'D CALL THE WHOLE DAMN THING A HONEYMOON by JENNA MCCARTHY

Congratulations
Stereo Queen Bee!
Please email me your full name and address at stephanieelliot@gmail.com so I can send you your book, and wow, you won two books in a ROW! This one and With a Little Luck, thanks to Random.org (and yes, I double/triple checked! Talk about lucky!

If It Was Easy, They’d Call The Whole Damn Thing A Honeymoon
Living With and Loving the TV-Addicted, Sex-Obsessed, Not-So-Handy Man You Married

By Jenna McCarthy

So yeah, say THAT title three times fast.

When I first ‘met’ Jenna McCarthy online, I thought what everyone thought – oh yeah, she’s the chick who was on MTV’s Singled Out and also a Playmate of the Month.

Make no mistake. Jenna-with-an-A McCarthy is prettier and much more talented than the chick who used to date Jim Carrey. You’ll see later when you watch the trailer for the book with the longest title in the world.

Damn Honeymoon comes out on Tuesday, October 4 and is part memoir and part marriage guide, but if you’re not married, don’t let this stop you from reading it and entering to win it!

It will give you great insight into the sacrament of marriage and also makes a great gift for ANYONE you know who has been through the glorious stages of wedded bliss – the snoring, the ignoring, the remote-hogging, the handy-manning, the I-know-how-to-get-there, the sports-watching, the can-you-make-me-dinner (although Jenna has trained her husband to COOK!), the ass-grabbing-in-the-kitchen (this one happens to ME all the time) … all the things that drive us crazy about the men who LOVE us!

See, doesn’t it sound like a hoot of a book already! It TRULY IS a masterpiece that’ll have you cracking up. Just don’t read it in bed next to your guy because then he might wonder what you’re reading, (if he’s not already sawing the logs). We do not want him on to all the secrets of how we can survive this blissful wedded life.

Check out the hilarious book trailer Jenna and her husband star in, and don’t miss the outtakes at the end!

MUST-SEE HILARIOUS BOOK TRAILER STARRING JENNA HERSELF AND CO-STARRING HER CUTE HUSBAND

And if you’re wondering what’s up with all the ZESTRA plugs, well, you’ll just have to check it out for yourself … I did. Literally!

Thanks Jenna! For solving all the mysteries of marriage in one handy hilarious and helpful book! Love it! You’ve simplified everything and made me crack up while doing so! And I know the chick on the cover is not looking for a turkey leg in the oven, is she? She’s trying to end the misery, right? Haha!

THIS JUST IN: Don't miss Jenna on the TODAY show Monday, October 3, with Hoda and Kathie Lee, but Khloe Kardashian will be sitting in for Kathie Lee! Holy CRAP!!!!

To enter to win a copy of Jenna’s book, share an annoying trait about your husband, the guy you currently love, or someone you were in a relationship with that had an annoying trait that you put up with because he had enough good qualities you could overlook that one particular trait!
