ATTACHMENTS by Rainbow Rowell

Winner Announced!
DaphneSFL!
Congratulations, and Daphne, you better love this book because I DID!! Soooo much! Please email me your full name and address and we'll get your book out to you. I LOOOOOVE this book and Rainbow is a kick-butt author! I'm so happy to have found her! And now you get to have her book too! My email is stephanieelliot@gmail.com!

Today's Book: Attachments
by Rainbow Rowell!
Please note, yesterday's book got posted late so please make sure to enter to win Stay by Allie Larkin as well too! Also, I promise to pick winners for the previous books Monday or Tuesday--we have company and were at the Grand Canyon!

I absolutely positively LOVE this book. Attachments is NOT even out yet. It comes out on my birthday, April 14! You know who else loves it? Jodi Piccoult loves it. She wrote a blurb about it. So did Haven Kimmel and Claire Cook. So you KNOW it’s going to be a SMASH HIT novel!

I want to write the best review here for you to fall in love with this book as much as I did but I am afraid I won’t do it justice. The story is set in 1999 when email is just coming onto the scene. Two of the main characters, Beth and Jennifer, both who work at a newspaper, correspond with one another through email. The guy whose job it is to monitor email at the company, Lincoln, falls in love with Beth through her emails, never having seen her because he works nights.

The book’s main character is Lincoln, and it is told from his perspective, and he is sweet and darling and you’ll fall in love with him too and you’ll root for him through the whole way as he has to face many obstacles. He really doesn’t like his job as an email monitor (guilt factor), he lives with his mom although he’s in his late 20s and needs to find a place of his own, and he’s in love with Beth, who currently is in a relationship (with a very hot band member, btw, making for some interesting turmoil!).

Jennifer, in the story, has her own troubles, trying to decide if she wants to get pregnant or not, and then dealing with some drama in her own life as well. The ‘dialogue’ between Beth and Jennifer is told throughout the story in only emails, which adds to the coolness of the book. It’s truly an amazing read, and definitely one for those of you who love John Hughes movies, the MTV era, and growing up when the internet phase was just starting out. It’s also a great read for anyone who has ever had a secret crush but didn’t know how to ‘fess up and went around feeling lost and forlorn over the fact that you’d wonder if he’d ever notice you. Really though, Attachments is a wonderful love story that you’ll read and shut, and then want to open up to the beginning and start right over again.

And of course, Rainbow (yes, her real and really cool name!) had me at page two with the mention of ZIMA, which happened to be my favorite malt beverage choice in the late ‘90s!

To win Attachments, tell me about an interesting email correspondence, or if you've ever gotten in trouble for writing an email. If you don’t have one, that’s OK!

*****
Please leave a comment, and all those who do will qualify to win Attachments! I’ll draw the winner in a couple of days and I will post the winner’s name at the TOP of this post, in the highlighted area.

Come back and read about each book every day in March. Choose the books you'd like to win. Enter for any or ALL the books. Each entry will count as an entry toward the grand prize of winning ALL 31+ books at the end of the month. You can win the book of the day and still qualify to win ALL the books at the end of the month!

PLEASE be specific with your name in the comment section, and IF YOUR NAME is listed as the winner, you must email me at stephanieelliot@gmail.com in order to claim your prize. Email me with your full name and address so I can have your book(s) sent to you.

I don't have an interesting email stories, but I have interesting Gchat conversations with my friends everyday while we're at work. We talk about everything, sex, relationships, weddings, work, etc. It's awesome to have good friends to complain to about work. We even shop online together.

I haven't ever gotten in trouble for an email, but, at least twice have sent an email as a reply instead of a forward, when i might have said something less-than-favorable about the person who originally sent the email. Oops. I just look at that like "oh well, at least they know how I feel."

My most interesting e-mail conversation took place between my husband and I before we had met in person. Everything was interesting and new to us and we both waited all day to get a message from the other one. It was fun!

When I was a freshman in college, I had a HUGE crush on one of my professors...One day during class I was taking tally notes on how many times he had turned around, as was a friend of mine...anyway, we both went to make a tally mark at the same time on my notebook and burst out laughing! He tried to get us to tell him why we were laughing, but we wouldn't tell...so later, I found something that I thought he would find interesting, so I sent it to him. He responded with "that's funny, but I don't think it's what had you laughing in class the other day..." SO! My roommate had stepped out of the room, so I responded with "Nope, you're right. We were laughing because we think you have a great ass and you turned around and we got to see it." ........and then we had an interesting e-mail correspondence from there.....

I have never gotten in trouble with an email strand before, but I have been privie to some pretty interesting ones! I had a friend get a little graphic about a kind of crazy weekend in email once, which I thought was funny since then it is in WRITING!!! I think people forget that and feel like they are just talking to you normally instead of putting the words out there for anyone to potentially see :).

My husband used to be on a submarine in the navy and we got to email. They were monitored so a few people got to read them before they got to your significant other so you weren't supposed to put anything depressing or really personal etc. Some wives had difficulty doing this so email was taken away from our boat for a few years. It was a bummer.

No great e-mail story here. Although, my roommate didn't know what the e stood for until we were watching How I Met Your Mother and Ted said "electronic mail." My roomate exclaimed, "That's what the E is for!" it was so funny.

An interesting email correspondence? Um..how about an LDR, 2 years + with a guy in England. Email, chat and phone calls. THAT was tough! and I wouldn't advise anyone try it. People can lie a lot easier when they aren't looking you in the eye! ;-)

I usually have interesting emails when I get a random email from my crazy ex sister in law...those get read and then deleted with no response.

I got an email from an ex-boyfriend that made me made. So i forwarded it to a friend of mine with my rant but I didn't forward, I actually replied back to the boyfriend. I actually did that twice with him. Fruedian slip? Probably. Maybe it was my passive aggressive way of telling him what I thought of him. I guess when you send it to the person it's not so passive.

Years ago I was following some conversations on a forum for getting in shape through hiking. I exchanged a few messages with this man from Australia. I have always wanted to go there so the topic changed from hiking to Australia. He went every year on a month long holiday across Australia and as time went on (we ended up emailing each other for 3 years) he shared stories about his trip and even made a video slideshow of his pictures set to Australian songs and sent to me. In return I told him about my part of the world. It was a great journey and he was the greatest friend I have never met!

A few years ago, my ex-bff of 12 years and I exchanged 137 bitch-slap, flame-war emails where we viciously threw insults about each others' "dirty laundry" at each other over the course of three days. I finally can open your site at my job! I have no idea why I couldn't something on our end for sure. Glad I can enter...finally.

Well, my email story is about 7 years ago. I was dating this guy and he obviouslly annoyed me about something so I was emailing my BFF all about it. However when I chose her name from the address book, I also selected my boyfriends brother! Yep he got an email where I trashed his brother. I wanted to DIE! DIE!

It was the most embarrassing thing that happened. I called him to apologize but he was cool. He said his brother was sometimes a tool, so he promised not to mention my email to him. I never heard about it from my boyfriend at the time, so I guess her kept his word.

Email lesson learned! LMAO!

I don't have an email story...but I have a funny Instant Message story. My husband and I met at work...and if you remember a previous comment on here, we dated in secret for over 2 years (ha...secret!). Our relationship grew from many IM conversations and a few times when I meant to say "1 sec"...I typed "1 sex"...LOL! Anyways...I didn't care for that job and wanted to move on, plus that is the only way our relationship was going to go anywhere else (and really, I didn't like my job and really wanted something different)....so, on my last day there, I thought I was sending an IM to him, saying "can we tell them all now" (that we are dating)...but instead I sent it to a good friend of ours. She said...what do you want to tell us....needless to say the "secret" was out before we officially announced it. Okay...the "1 sex" was funnier. But you get the idea! :) Fun to relive those memories!

I nearly lost friends over an email. It's so stupid now, but I had mentioned to my friend J. that I thought that two of my friends would have told a former friend that I had gotten engaged. My hubby and I conducted almost our whole "courtship" through email while we were working at the same company. He was in Singapore and I was here on the East Coast. We were a half a world away from each other and our time zones were exactly 12 hours apart. It was during the same time that the book was written, so it was really unique to have a relationship through email back then!

Haven't we all accidentally hit "reply all" when we shouldn't have? :)

I wish I had a good email story but I don't -but.. I have however, replied to a sender when I meant to forward it to someone else. The last time I did that? It cost me a job! (well, moving forward in the interview process anyway.) Lesson learned for sure! And now I check and RECHECK and THREECHECK my emails before I send them out.

The only interesting email story I can think of is when I was emailing a friend of mine and I typed in the wrong address and the person wrote back and said that I had the wrong address but person turned out to be someone who I had worked with years ago and never had their email address. It was a total coincidence. That's all I've got!

A woman I used to work with used to fight with me passive aggressively through e-mail, despite the fact that she sat 3 feet away from me. And then she started reading my e-mails when I was away from my desk, tried to get me in trouble with the boss, and was let go as a result.

Who hasn't gotten in trouble for sending an email? I got in trouble for NOT sending one. Some random girl from some random discussion board claimed she was coming to my city and wanted to meet me. I dithered but finally said I'd love to get together, but I guess I never sent the email b/c I heard thru the grapevine how hurt she was. Oh well. --Tracy Miller

Acccck! Does it count when horrible emails are sent via FB from my little sister at college? There are things she sends me (but means to send her other friend by the same name) that make me cringe and avoid talking to her when she comes home. College these days frightens me.

My hubby and I met when he was in town for a job interview. He lived 16 hours away. We exchanged emails for the next three months. It was so fun getting to know him through email. I didn't even own a computer at the time. I would stop at the library on the way home from work just to check my email in hopes he had written!

I don't e-mail all that much anymore. The bulk of the e-mailing I do is to my best friend in Alabama. When we get on a good streak, we will volley back and forth for hours on e-mail alone while she worked the night shift at a newspaper.

I don't have an interesting email story, but I will share one of my coworkers.

The other day she was angry at her boyfriend and was emailing her friend and complaining. One time when she replied she accidentally sent her ranting email to her boyfriend. When she tried to recall it, he messaged her saying "Too Late". He had already read it.

The only interesting email story I have was when my account got hacked and sent out Viagra ads to everyone in my contacts list. Pretty embarrassing considering my former boss and some coworkers were on that list.

The worst email story I have happened when my group of girlfriends and I included our husbands in a "conversation" we were having. My husband made a comment that was meant to be a joke...but one person didn't take it that way, since she couldn't hear the tone or see that he was laughing when he wrote it. Then her husband chimed in, and people were upset with each other. Luckily, we can all laugh about it now!

Stephanie, thank you so much for including my book in your contest! Your posts are always so fresh and funny, and I still can't believe all the nice things you've said about my book.

I'm loving all these e-mail stories. And I'm super-loving all the support Zima is getting. I'd suggest we all pour one out for Zima -- but what would we pour?!

There was an email going around work that someone's car had the tires and rims stolen off of it. So of course everyone got in a fuss thinking what else could happen. Well come to find out, the tires and rims were repossessed. OOPS!

My husband and I had met through a friend of a friend. We gave each of our friends our email address to give to the "interesting person I'd like you to meet". We started out by emailing each other. I recently found the old emails that he saved. They were very interesting. Reading them years later, I'm surprised he even responded to the strange girl at the other end of the computer but I'm glad he did.

Thanks for the great book giveaways!

Two of my best friends I knew in high school but didn't really become friends with till we were all at different colleges and started corresponding via email. :-)

I went to high school and college with Rainbow Rowell, and I've been a fan of her writing since she wrote a column for our high-school paper. I'm so pleased for her that she's having a book published!

I got in trouble for an email at work once. I had forwarded or replied to someone else's email, not realizing it had a naughty word in it. It was immediately blocked and bounced back to not only my boss but to HR as well. I was terrified that I'd get fired or at least get a stern talkin' to :)

It's amazing how much freer some people (including myself) become in email. I've found myself inadvertently in the middle of some long flirtatious string of emails back and forth with someone w/o really ever intending a work conversation going down that path.

I left my computer up and in the middle of an email while I answered the phone. A coworker finished the email with quite a descriptive fictional sexual encounter that was read by the wrong person.
I was in a bit of trouble for turning my back on my computer but my coworker was terminated.

For the last 7 years, I've had a weekly (sometimes daily) email relationship with a woman I consider to be a friend, although we've never met in person. I came to know her via a message board on a topic we had in common and now we have a really great bond. I actually think she knows me better than some of my "real life" friends.

I don't have one myself. But, I do have a story about a co-worker. He was the computer "wizard" at work and was apparently reading other peoples emails. One of the emails the girl was talking about him. So, one day he starts saying stuff to her that there is no way he could have known unless he read her email. Finally he admitted it. Needless to say he lost his job.

We have an bigwig at our office who does not pay attention when responding to e-mails and many times randomly/mistakenly adds third parties to an e-mail chain, who have nothing to do with the subject matter and ALWAYS with a note to respond ASAP. This, then turns into a situation where the third parties start e-mailing internally cc:ing everyone to see who is handling and to please address immediately, when, in fact, they are not even involved in the matter - others here chuckle to themselves and once in a while someone will let the third parties know they can ignore the e-mail originally sent to them. It's actually pretty funny and happens quite often. Oh, and this person constantly misspells words never using spell check, but will be the first to point out if a word is misspelled or term misused in someone else's e-mail.

Back in the late 90's, when I was in college and email and the internet were just becoming more common place and widely used, I ran into all the usual trappings of chain letters, spam, scams, and even online dating before there was match.com. I even sent a campus wide spam email by accident. It was some sort of chain letter if memory serves me correctly. I didn't even know enough to blame it on hackers at the time!

Years back at pretty much my first "real" job, I got put on email "lockdown" for the most part. I don't even remember now what the issue was or what I was responding to, but I didn't use my "professional filter" and I let the attitude flow. From that point forward, I wasn't allowed to send anything other than generic replies and such without getting it cleared through a supervisor - I've built a much stronger filter over the years :o)
