Book: The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir

Author: Annette Fix

Website: http://www.thebreak-updiet.com/

Winner Will Be Announced Here

“If you’ve ever loved and lost, and eaten fudge topping out of the jar” … ladies, this one’s for you!

We haven’t featured a memoir since last week, so here’s one for today, The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir by Annette Fix.

I met Annette online, and again, I think it was through that fabulous Yahoo Chick Lit group where we first connected. We’ve remained online buds and swear that someday we’re gonna meet up. Here’s her story:

Annette Fix thought she had it all. She had been the sole support for her son for 12 years and was planning her happily ever after with the man of her dreams, when her life turned upside down and she got dumped. Hard.

Her immediate remedy? Hot fudge topping, and not spoonfuls. She needed vats of it. And fast.

Her breakup - and how she recovered - is told boldly, heartbreakingly and humorously as it unfolded in her book, The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir . What I love about this memoir is that it's so much more about Annette's life than just her breakup. She had her chocolate and her Wonderboy son to get her through the rough spots, and she charged onward. An alternative title might be: An Exotic Dancin' Homeschoolin' Mom's Break-up Memoir.

Annette powers through the tough times and comes out ahead. An inspirational book for all women whether you’re a mom or not, and all those who've ever gone through a break-up!

Current news on Annette: She was offered an option to adapt The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir as a cable TV series. She's currently working on the pilot and obsessively cutting out celebrity faces from People Magazine to assemble the cast. Keep an eye out on Amazon and B&N.com in the month of April for the release of the ebook version of The Break-Up Diet: A Memoir.

Break-up story time—tell me yours, short and sweet, but I hope it’s not too heartbreaking – I don’t wanna cry!

My worst breakup was in college. Someone I worked with. Broke me pretty bad. My breakup diet consisted of lots of vodka. But I got over it, moved to a new city and found The Husband. TaraUB in IN (I keep forgetting to sign these)

Doing some retail therapy and running into his sister who just went on and on about how he would realize how he just lost the best thing, etc, etc. Not what I wanted or needed to hear. I needed MORE retail therapy after that convo!

My break up story isn't my worst, but my first. I was 16. We both knew it wasn't working, but the bad part was he didn't tell me himself when he dumped me. He got a mutual friend to call me and tell me. Turns out he had been dating another girl. I didn't cry for a week or bury my sorrows in chocolate. I got even... I went out with his brother.

I'd loved him all through high school. He'd loved every other girl all through high school. Finally, at prom, he decided it was my turn. Two months later? He sent me an IM. AN IM. Turns out, I wasn't the one. He's now happily married to the love of his life, James.

Sigh. My first love broke up with me and I was absolutely devastated until he told me, "you'll never make it without me." At that point, teeny voice was persistent in my head telling me that this break-up was a very good thing, indeed, even though it was so raw and painful.

I don't really have a breakup story that is worth mentioning other than those ridiculous ones in junior high school where you'd be broken up with by a third party. The ones when I was older actually just floated away. My daughter had a doozy with her first real boyfriend. She was two years behind him in school and the mother decided that he needed to be free in college. Instead of allowing it to run its course (it would have according to my daughter because they were fighting on the phone a lot)...the mother comes to my office at work and demands that they break up. I like to think that she had just turned 50, this was her youngest and she was going through serious empty nest issues, and that she was hormonal...but four years later...I still wonder. ktmixon315

I was in love with my college sweetheart but my parents did not approve since he was not jewish. After college he moved to Texas and I did not follow him. It took a long time to get over him since I did not have any closure.

Thanks for the great book giveaways.

The first break up that I can think of that left a mark was when I was 17. He was my first real boyfriend and although we all know those teenage relationships end the problem with this one was he was my neighbor...therefore I had to see him come and go on a daily basis...and eventually start bringing around the "other woman." LOL! I'm so over that now though...and honestly, glad we broke up!

I broke up with my last bf. I knew it. wasnt going anywhere serious and the final straw was when he asked me how much money I would be spending on him during the holidays because he thought 700 was sufficient. But he would just prefer the cash. We had only been dating less than two months and it. was only september!

I dated this great guy for about a year and didn't see it really going anywhere in the future, but I liked having him to hang out with. I got wind that he was going to propose so I broke up with him before he could buy the ring. Years later after he forgave me, I found out that it hurt him more that he was not going to be apart of my son's life and not the fact that he wasn't going to be my husband.

The hardest was my freshman year in college. He was a great guy, and it just didn't work out. I'm not too sad about it, because the guy I did marry is amazing!

This is weird to say, but I never broke up with anyone. I dated lots of guys, but none real serious, so when our dating ended it wasn't like a break-up. My husband was my first "real" boyfriend...and we got married. I hope I never have a break-up story to share.

I don't really have an exciting break-up story. The closest thing I have to a good break-up story is when I told my best friend I was in love with him and he just walked away and didn't say anything. We were never friends again. :(

My first break-up was devastating to me and put me into a depression, but I was 19 and young. The guy was an ass and I learned many important lessons at a young age. I'm thankful for it now.

I guess all break-ups are the worst when they are happening but in hind sight you can see it was probably for the best. My worst which wasn't so bad was when I broke up with this guy I had grew up with and then we dated later in life and I found up he had a drug problem. I had wanted to at least keep in touch with him but my brother unbeknownst to me told him to leave me alone and not speak to me anymore and I worried about him alot after that. I have talked to him recently and thankfully he is doing well!

I was a freshman in high school and he was a senior. I fell hard! He was my "first" and true love. At his senior party he got really drunk and had sex with a girl he was friends with. She did it out of revenge of her boyfriend cheating on her. He acted really weird the next time he saw me and I knew something was up. She called me a week later to tell me. I broke up with him and slugged him in the eye in front of his best friends! Good times!

In college, I had a really sad break-up and there was no alcohol in my apartment. So my roommate ran across the hall and borrowed a botle of emergency vodka from some neighbors! We drank until I felt better. Now that's a good friend.

My worst break up was the best thing that could have happened to me. Shortly after we got engaged, my new fiance cheated on me. We fought, broke up, fought again, broke up again...In that process, I found out who my friends really were and how strong I am. My break up therapy - friends!

In college, I was the 'rebound' girl for a classmate. He was a bit older, mysterious, exciting....I was blinded and in love and didn't see what was really going on. He was supposed to visit me on break, canceled because 'his mom said no'. He hit on my best friend. It hurt like heck but I knew I needed to let him go. clk-a

We met and it was absolutely love at first sight! About a month later I was at his house and we were having lunch. At this point one of my best friends had a reminder on her calendar for a year from when we met saying "Is Lindsay Engaged? Punch her" because we were all certain that was how it was going to work! However, over that fateful lunch, he casually mentioned to me he never wanted to get married - ever. Or have kids. And yeah... we should probably just stick to sleeping together.

Needless to say- OVER! And yes, TUBS of chocolate were ingested.

College. I was deeply in love, engaged to be exact (at the ripe old age of 19) and he got involved with a local skank who worked at the Chili's in town. She got pregnant, I got my heart broken, and transferred to a school back at home. But, I look at it this way: I have a great life now, which probably wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been such a tool :)

And no, they're not together anymore.

It was my first love and he broke up with me over the phone. I was more upset that he didn't have the nerve to do it face-to-face (We saw each other the night before) than I was that we broke up (which I was upset about that too). Luckily I had some great girlfriends who knew just how to make me feel better!

My ex and I were taking some time apart to see if we could fix our relationship. He got a hotel about 20 mintues from our apartment and proceeded to get drunk and accidentally called my cell phone instead of the girls he just met and was waiting in his hotel room to mee up with. Needless to say there was nothing to fix after that.

My worst break-up was because it was a long distance romance. The distance didn't keep my heart from breaking any less. I have to say it was actually a very good diet plan for me though! I love well over 20 pounds!

ohhhh. Hard break-up. I did the break-up a few days before my wedding!... I knew something wasn't right; don't know where I found the strength. THEN I met my husband of 18 years (wrote about this yesterday!) in a bar (swollen eyes from crying, no make-up and NO bra!) on what should have been my wedding night.

THAT was a rough time!

Looking forward to this book!

gesh, pretty soon your going to know me better than some of my irl friends ;)

Let's see worst...easy. I was a teen mom and showed up at the high school after I had my son to have lunch with some friends and who knew my boyfriend (baby daddy for lack of a better word) freaked when I showed up...apparently his school girlfriend wasn't too happy either. But in the end I married a faboulous guy so no tears!

My breakup was my divorce. My husband came home on the night of my son's 8th grade graduation and informed us he was leaving because Chris, my son, had not made high honor roll for the final quarter.
I cried through the whole ceremony as I watch my beautiful child graduate without his father present.
Chocolate and red wine sustained me for a year until my divorce was final.
Happy endings! My son recently graduated from medical school.
Life is good.

HS boyfriend. A co-worker, who went to the same school as him, told me she had seen him kissing another girl. I confronted him and told him I wanted to break up. He convinces me that he had just given the other girl a hug. I table the break up. He tells me to call him when I get home. When I call him, he then confesses that he's been dating someone else for two weeks and thinks we should break up. Thank god for friends, shopping, and a new bf who was a much better kisser! I always think of him when I hear Garth Brook's "Unanswered Prayers" - I was so sure we were meant to be together at that time :) 15 years, one great husband and three awesome kids later I thank God for unanswered prayers!

I wouldn't say I've had any terrible break ups, in retrospect that is. The one that hit me the hardest was when I returned from visiting my mom in New Mexico and he dumped me for really no reason. I later found out it was because he thought I was spending too much time with my friends.

Mine is so cliched. I dated a boy all through high school and then the first week we were away at different colleges he sent me a letter. Dumping me. Turns out he was dumping me for my then-best friend. Broke my heart, but also let me experience rage fully for the first time. Turns out I am not the forgiving type. :)

They married and have kids and I had a fabulous time in college. All for the best.

I had been wanting to break up with him for a while and just hadn't worked up the courage yet. We were at his house one afternoon and I could tell something was up. After much nagging on my part to get him to spill it (really, just breakup w/me, I can handle it!) he runs down the hallway. He comes back gets down on one knee and PROPOSES to me. I was shocked, I thought it was pretty obvious that this wasn't working. I quickly said no thank you, let's not see each other anymore (I did remember my manners!) he burst into tears and I ran out of that house as fast I could.

I fell in love with a handsome, younger, very attentive man. We got married and things went downhill from there. One morning he was standing in our kitchen, his arms full of his clothes, asking if I thought he and my friend made a great couple. Yes, you could have knocked me down with a feather. I had that sentence in my head on a loop for years. Finally, Karma kicked in and he was left standing outside looking in, she had moved on to her boss. I now realize that even though that was one of the most diffucult times in my life, it showed me that I was a strong women. I was raising two children, keeping a new house and a full time job all by myself. I was Super Women!! Today I'm married to the greates man in the world. I am blissfully happy.

I think my saddest breakup was my first real love, a boy I dated in college. He decided that he hadn't dated enough different girls and we should spend the summer seeing other people. He dated a lot, and I didn't date anyone. When the summer ended he told me that I was the one. Sadly for him, in order to agree to see other people, I had moved on. I just couldn't trust him again and that was the end of the relationship. Ronit W

It's never ended with a bang....but fizzled to an end. I've never had a real break up. I'm not much of a dater, so when I do, and things lose their fizzle, the relationship sputters to an end, with both of us going our separate ways.

I did try to break up with my current boyfriend, because I was afraid it was getting to serious. I cried until I couldn't breath and didn't get out of bed for two days. I don't count this as a real break-up because after those two days, we were back together.

My worst break-up was when I broked up with my boyfriend of two years! It was far more heartbreaking to hurt someone than to be hurt. Seriuosly, it was horrible; I have been broken-up with 4 other times, and that pain is so much more bearable than that one break-up of my own doing!

I was always the girl who broke up WITH people, not was broken up with... alas in college I was dating a guy for quite some time, was head over heels for him and he for me. Until one day out of the blue he called to tell me he was coming over... he basically told me that because we were graduating in a month and weren't sure where we'd be that we had to break up because it wasn't fair to me... I was devestated, begged, pleaded etc. was a total mess about it. About 3 weeks later thanks to the glorious world of facebook I see that he is "in a relationship" with a girl he always told me was a tramp.

It goes without saying 4 months later she ditched him for another guy and he came crawling back... they usually do! jerks!

By the time I had done that I was so over him anyway so it was really good therapy and very productive!

Considering I've been with my husband for 20 years, it's hard to remember my last break up. It was in high school - and I was completely infatuated with this guy in a band. He and I would talk for hours and my dreams came true when I went to his prom with him. Once he started college, he sort of forgot about me and I was a sad sack. I didn't do much "therapy - retail or food wise" but my greatest glory was when I came home from college and he tried to get together with me again and I told him no way. I wasn't going to get jerked around again. I felt so strong being able to dump him the second time!

I had an 'almost breakup' does that count? Went through a terrible time in my marriage, the kind that it is still painful to think back on but managed to come out on top! Due to this crisis my husband and I have rekindled our feelings for one another and have vowed to put our marriage and ourselves first. Without this terrible crisis we would not be the people we are today in the marriage we have today which is the BEST, more than we could ask for - We are truly blessed - Heartbreak and pain are part of this journey of love and the only thing that matters is that you learn and grow from past mistakes.

I'm not especially proud of this story, but it turned out ok in the end and we've stayed friends all these years later.

The night before I started college ... I ended things
With my long term high school boyfriend. He decided not to go to college... He had no job....or goals, none of which I or my parents were happy about. He had failed bootcamp and i was finally seeing that the relationship I was in was abusive and I knew there was no way he would let me enjoy college or do study groups with anyone especially other men. The breakup went well that night but the next few months were hell because he was obsessive and made things very difficult but I never let him back into my life.....

Ugghh.. my first boyfriend broke my heart by dumping me for someone younger - not that bad right? Well.... he was 21... I was 19 and the new little number? 17! He took her to her prom!!! At this point in my life I laugh and realize how EWWWWW gross he was/is - but back then? DEVASTATION!!

Oh - and he recently tried to befriend me on Facebook - I immediately blocked him...

Awful guy convinced me I was trash, treated me like it, cheated on me, finally broke up with me. I lost 50 pounds, cried and threw up every day. After a long while I started to get my mojo back, moved (he CRIED when I told him I was moving), met a cute guy and about 2 years after the breakup was feeling good enough to ask out a cute guy. 10 years later, we're having our first baby. :)

My worst break up was with my 13 year old daughters father. I was 6 months pregnant with her when I dumped him. So I was a single mother with an 11 year old and a baby on the way.

I told him I'd rather raise 2 kids alone than be with someone who cared about everything else more than me and his child.

He wasn't there when she was born, he only saw her about 6 times in her life and he hasn't seen her since 2000. The worst part? He only lives on the other side of our city. I saw him once when I was with my daughter and he walked in the opposite direction.

I knew Brian liked me, but I didn't want a relationship just then, only fun, and I told him so. The fun lasted well over a year. I finally admitted to myself that I was in love with him, but knew he wasn't in love with me. I broke it off. It was one of the hardest things for me to do.

My ex got a little physically abusive after a friend's wedding reception so even though we lived together and were about to get engaged, I moved out and ended it not long after that horrible night. The wedding reception was about 3 hours from home too, and I left him there to find his own ride. I told him I wouldn't put up with that kind of treatment and I wasn't joking!

The weirdest break up for me was when this guy I was dating said he was going on vacation and then I never heard back from him. I wonder if he is still there?

My break up story--I moved 500 miles to rid the loser and get my life back on track--then there were a lot of tears-but now he is still a loser and I did get my life back.

One of my more memorable breakups from college involved the stomach flu, winter break, and two weeks of crying and misery on my parents' couch. The dumper tried to get us back together after the holidays, but I never forgave him for leaving me sick and dateless on New Year's Eve.

Ya don't wanna cry? Well, how about this- I was working at a ski resort in Utah and began dating (not seriously) a chef/snowboard instructor. Well, after about 2 weeks I let him talk me into boarding (he would teach). It was not fun to me but for my first run he took me down a blue intermediate. Halfway up he told me that the relationship was not working out for him and when we got to the top he left me to ski alone. I was so mad because I didn't particularly find him appealing or even attractive but wanted to learn how to board- it served me right, I suppose, but it still crawls up my butt that he dumped me (I was some blonde arm candy for the troll) on a ski lift.

College sweetheart. We fell apart, then crashed back into each other 2 years after. Where back together for another blissful year and a half, and then fell apart again. He owns a large part of my hear, that I fear I will never get back.

It's the day before Spring Break and I'm walking to the school bus in hopes of seeing my "boyfriend". (Boyfriend is a term used loosely since we had barely ever held hands and only had kissed once). When my friend comes up to me and asks what happened and why V and I had broken up. This caught me by surprise and I couldn't really go back to confront him since we were being rushed to the buses. She tells me that one of our mutual friends was supposed to let me know that V wanted to break up (which never happened).

During spring break I tried calling the little punk, but he never answered, supposedly he was out of town. So one of my friends and I decided to three way call him (it was ALL THE RAGE back in the day) so her number would show on the caller ID and pretend I wasn't on the phone. She brought up my name and V mentioned how he was avoiding me and had been planning to have his friend break up with me, but since it didn't happen then maybe we could still try to work things over after spring break.

When we came back to school I was over the moon elated because I had just gone to an *NSYNC concert, so no one could bring me down, when I ran into V in the hallway. I threw it in his face about how I knew he was in town and was avoiding me and didn't want to break up with me anymore. Stunned he asked: how did you know?? to which I replied: I was on the phone STUPID! and proceeded to storm off. (I was quite the drama queen).

Needless to say he wasn't the "one". oh well....I found mine! =)

My first real breakup was when I was 15... he was my first boyfriend along with many other firsts... The breakup was awful, but there is one thing I remember more than any other about it. I can remember crying in my room at night and my older brother coming in to hug me and tell me everything was going to be okay and that he loved me. It still brings tears to my eyes to remember how sweet my brother was and still is!

I don't think I have any really horrible breakup stories. The most memorable was one guy I dated in college. He drove all the way up to my house one weekend over the summer, and my mom wasn't nice to him at all (she didn't like him). He called me the day after he left and we broke up over the phone. It was pretty mutual though.

My worst break up was in high school from my first love. In reality, it wasn't THAT bad...we're still friendly, but at the time it was devastating. We broke up about two weeks before the prom...he was still gentleman enough to take me though, because he'd already promised. (He had already graduated too, so the sweetest part was that he still came to a lame high school prom) Jenni(fur) N.

The breakup I'm speaking about is the one that I previously posted about in a prior contest. He's now my husband so it's a good story. :) He broke up with me after only a month and (because I was only 19 and, as you know, teenagers are SO smart) I was heart broken (for a millisecond). I was certain I'd never see him again but low and behold we'd cross paths again

Colleen Turner said...

To be honest, I don't have a very good break up story :(. Most of my breakups have been pretty mutual and painless (and, luckily, I am still married to the love of my life so haven't had to experience that pain!). The only one that comes to mine happened in the fifth grade. I missed a few days of school and when I showed up at the rollerskating rink I was told my little boyfriend was now boyfriends with a friend of mine. I was heartbroken for about five minutes before it was time to skate!

The oddest breakup I've had involved a guy I had been seeing for only about a month or two, and not super seriously. I called him to break it off one day, and apparently he didn't believe me because he called me about a week later to break up with me since I had been ignoring him all week. I decided it wasn't worth debating and just let it go!

Well, I've only had 1 break-up...and the second time around I met my husband! Not only do I only have one, it wasn't much of a story...the relationship was going nowhere and we both decided it was time. The guy was a weirdo though, so I'm not sure WHY I was with him for almost 2 years..

I recently broke up with my best friend/roommate. We have been best friends for about 7 years until we dated. It ended badly. Funny thing is usually I eat emotional but this is the first breakup where food doesn't sound good at all. Guess the breakup diet can be good sometimes too!

How do you do break up stories quick!?!? Too much drama to relly summarize... But my ex husband was in Aruba with the USCG I signed up for Foodstamps because his pay got messed up, a week later I recieved a letter saying the State was pulling child support for a child born in 1995.. that would be our little Zach so I called to tell the state there was a mistake I only signed up for FS because his pay was messed up I would only need them that month, when they politely informed me the case had nothing to do with me, and I might want to talk to my husband about his OTHER four year old son... divorce much?!?!

My break ups have been rather simple for the most part. The sizzle fizzles and we move on. I'm not saying they were emotionally easy to handle, and I have to say I'm not friends with any of my exes.

My breakup didn't come as much of a shock. I was 17 and my boyfriend lived with us. I had recently heard that he was sleeping with a few friends of mine, but chose to believe him when he said it wasn't true. But eventually, I broke it off. It didn't occur to me until a few years later that his "friend", a man, may have been more. The AOL screen name of their initials, the house painting job but no paint to be seen on him, a car as a gift... I could go on and on lol.

One of the hardest things is getting dumped when you think everything is fine (i.e. getting along, planning summer vacations together). I didn't go the chocolate route, I focused on my son and going to the beach which turned out to be the best vacation we have had together. Lisa P

I have been married so long that I can not remember a break-up story of my own. But I have 2 grown daughters that have both had serious relationships that ended badly. I felt really bad for them and there wasn't a whole lot I could do for them, they had to work thru it themselves. I just made sure that I was available to listen, listen, listen. Oh and I stocked up on Kleenex!

My high school boyfriend was 1 year younger than me and so I therefore was set to graduate before him. He broke up with me the winter of my senior year because I was going to graduate and move away to college... IN 9 MONTHS! Really he just broke up with me so he could date another girl, sigh.

My break up story would have to be, the break up in HS right before prom. Tickets already purchased, limo reserved, so we eneded up having to go togther. I think it made the break up even harder.

ummm...I have never had a breakup. srsly. I never dated until I was 18 and am happily married to my first. We will celebrate our 11th anniversary this coming October. However, I have had the friend dump diet in which I binge on all my favorites and boycott everything that makes me think of that former friend.

My first boyfriend broke up with me in college after 6 months of dating. We had known each other for 12 years. We remaind close friends and a year and a half later were engaged! While I didn't like the break up at the time, it only made us stronger and helped him realize I was the only one.

Sadly, my breakups have been less 'diet' more 'carbohydrate binge'. Since I don't want to send your readers running for the Kleenex, I'll tell my only humorous break-up story: I'm a pretty rigid person when it comes to making choices, so you can imagine my discomfort when the guy I was currently dating wouldn't tell the waitress what he preferred to drink. He said "I don't know....I guess...tea", and when she asked sweet or unsweet, he replied with "aw, I don't know" and "either one" and "I don't care" to her multiple confused and embarrassed inquiries. Of course, my head was practically exploding on the other side of the table (just pick one!), and ended the relationship shortly after. Couldn't you just imagine: "honey, do you want kids?" "I dunno." Argh!!

My worst breakup was definitely from my high school sweetheart. We weren't right for each other, but it was hard for him to accept that I was calling it quits. It took about a month to break up with him...and a good 2 years to get over him! My only regret is that I didn't do it sooner!
