In Malice Quite Close

By Brandi Lynn Ryder

*this is #3 of four books in a row I'm blasting to you this week in the Fall Fab Book Giveaway-
be sure to enter them all!

When I was first asked to review In Malice Quite Close, I have to admit, I almost turned it down. The title didn’t quite appeal to me (later I discover it’s part of a poem), and then at first, the description didn’t really grab me. But something, somehow pulled at me, and I told the publicist to go ahead and send it to me.

This is one of those really cool times I am so glad I didn’t make a mistake. It is an incredible read. It’s definitely not one of my normal chicky books, and definitely don’t get me wrong when I refer to my normal books as “chicky” books, but by now, you all know the types of books I love to read. Women’s fiction.

This one is more of a mysterious thrilling page-turner where I had no clue where it was going or what was happening or who might be a bad guy or if the main character was whacky or not. Do you know what I mean? See … Not my normal read!

I also loved this book because it starts out with a young girl being kidnapped and morphs into her turning into the kidnapper’s lover. There’s also a strong element of the art world as well, and I was an art history major, so that aspect appealed to me.

I started reading it when we got home from Chicago this summer. It was one of those things where I said, “Hmmm, I’ll read the first couple of pages and see where it takes me.” I had piles of mail surrounding me and a bunch of books to sort through, and tons of laundry to do, but I ended up on the couch where I read through the first 43 pages like THAT!

That’s a sign of a really good book. I knew I had to finish this book and then share it with you guys.

Here’s the book blurb:

When Tristan Mourault—expatriate aesthete, and heir to a world-renowned collection of Impressionist masterpieces—catches sight of young Karen Miller during a trip to San Francisco, he knows he must have her. Convincing himself that she deserves more than the frayed, middle-brow life she was born into, he sets in motion a calculated campaign of enchantment and romance that sweeps Karen off her feet. First, he stages her disappearance. Then, her transformation. Karen, the ordinary fifteen-year-old girl, becomes Gisèle—Tristan's daughter by day, his lover by night, and the crowning achievement of his lifelong quest for beauty and perfection.

Fifteen years later, Devon, Washington. Framed by glacial lakes and snow-capped mountains, Devon is a picturesque bohemia with a prospering art scene. Tristan and Gisèle are the center of this elite, eccentric, and capricious world, and Gisèle herself has matured into a sophisticated young woman. The desired object of many admirers, she is also now a devoted mother to her daughter Nicola and a distant wife to Luke, the man she married to keep up appearances. But the secrets that hold their life together are as ornate as the town's legendary architecture. When Nicola uncovers a cache of unsigned nude portraits—all of Gisèle —Tristan's carefully curated world erupts, and tragedy unfolds.

An exploration into the origins of obsession and the beguiling power of art, In Malice, Quite Close tells a story of perilous greed and manipulation, drawing readers into a byzantine drama that keeps its darkest secrets until the very last page.

I tend to have a possitive outlook for almost every book I start so the surprise is usually for the book I was sure I would like and ended up hating. Wicked by Gregory Maguire was one example of that.

I've been surprised at some books that had great reviews, and seemingly my type, and it was a struggle to finish. I'm also having trouble with the first Stieg Larson book. It's hurts my head. TaraUB in IN

I got the book Freedom (an Oprah pick) and couldn't make it past the first 100 pages. I kept trying as it was a bestseller, but just couldn't finish it which never happens. I normally just keep plugging away...not this time...hated it! LeslieGC

I usually pick a book by it's cover, much like I do my wine, so yes there have been times I have been surprised both good and bad.

I was at a bookstore the other day and saw their was a sequel to the Nanny Diaries (Nanny returns). I loved the first one and was so surprised with how terrible the second one is. I couldn't even finish it.

I picked up Eat, Pray, Love after it became an international sensation. I figured I'd like it because I'm obsessed with the idea of going to Italy. However, I didn't realize how much I would love that book. I underlined certain passages that spoke to me. I won't even lend my copy to friends or family because I'm afraid I won't get my book back!

I am always being surprised by books - both good and bad. If I don't like a book initially, I usually put it down and try again later. My most recent attempt at this is Pillars of the Earth, I picked it up again last week. So far, it's good and I'm very intrigued!

I generally only stick with certain books unless I am reading them for class. I recently read The Kite Runner and was suprised at how much I really liked the book and how much I learned about Afghan culture.

I'm very book snobby. If the cover/blurb on the back isn't interesting to me, I won't pick it up. At bookclub I got The Secret Life of Bees in a book exchange and everyone gushed about it. I couldn't get past Ch. 2. I think I'm coming to the conclusion that I don't like "time" pieces. I prefer characters I can relate to.

I usually like a book I pick up to read. But I read reviews, check out the jacket blurb, etc. I usually go by the cover also, but that is not always a good idea.

Laura Kay said...

I'm definitely all about a good cover! I have a pretty big net of type of books I like to read and find I like to break it up a little with the genre. There have been a number of books where I'm not sure about, but have found a number of gems. Even books where I'm not thrilled with I have found if I get through the whole book I tend to find some appreciation for it.

I was never interested in the Twilight series. Would openly say I would refuse to read. I ended up being goaded into reading them and was SO surprised at how much I enjoyed that series.

I have always managed to finish a book even if it's not as great as I was hoping....with one exception - Wicked by Gregory Maguire. Was so excited to read this with all the hype of the theater show and I just couldn't get through it. Absolutely hated it.

I have to say how much I enjoy reading everyone's comments. I have officially taken Wicked off my list to read. :) I would say I hated the 19th Wife. A friend of mine in a book club said it was fantastic and it sounded good but I could not get through it. I for one LOVE The Secret Life of Bees!

I also lean toward the "chicky" books, but in a pinch I picked up a book titled "murder book"...It was such a struggle to get through, possibly the worst book I've ever read. I was surprised on how much I loved "Airframe" though. It was a definite page turner!

I was thrilled to read Wicked because I LOVE The Wizard of Oz. It took me forever to get into it. It got to the point that when my dog ate my copy... I didn't rush out to get a new one. My husband surprised me with a new copy and I have still yet to open it. :(

I read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle because 'everyone else was'. I had been avoiding it because the synopsis of it did not appeal to me but I had to see what all the hype was about. Let me tell you, I LOVE that book! And I have been recommending it to everyone I know or if someone asks me for a 'good book' suggestion.

Yes that's happened to me a few times. Twilight believe it or not. I felt like ahhhh it's all the hype it's probably not that good and I loved it! Of course it's gone the other way for me too where I anticipate a book to bee good and can't wait to read it and then actually dislike it. This book is one that I would not have picked off the bat either so now I'm interested and curious!

It's not what I thought and it's too much of a chore to read.

OK, I'll give you one that I loved and one that I hated...

I bought Eat, Pray, Love after seeing the movie trailer and was sure that I would love the book. I never even finished the book it was so slow and painful to read! I'm all about self-discovery/awareness, blah blah blah, but this one absolutely bored me to tears. One of the only times I actually liked the movie better than the book.

I picked up Emily Giffin's "Something Borrowed" after having seen it at Target for awhile. Having known nothing about the author or the book I bought it on a whim. Imagine my surprise when I devoured it and all her other books. Now she's absolutely one of my favorite authors and I recommend her books to everyone.

Thanks for the giveaways!
