By Sarah Pinneo
This will be a big week on MaNiC as I’ve got three books lined up – the other two are Spin by Catherine McKenzie and Four of a Kind by Val Frankel. SO make sure to check back during the week to enter for all of the books being featured!
Today’s book is Julia’s Child by Sarah Pinneo and not only is it a great concept of a book, I loved the clever title right from the start, and it ties into a clever story about a mom who wants to have it all – the business she’s always dreamed of, and the family she loves. Can she make it all happen?
Julia Bailey is a mompreneur with too many principles and too little time. Her fledgling company, Julia’s Child, makes organic toddler meals with names like Gentle Lentil and Give Peas a Chance. But before she realizes her dream of seeing them on the shelves of Whole Foods, she will have to make peace between her professional aspirations and her toughest food critics: the two little boys waiting at home. Is it possible to save the world while turning a profit?
Julia’s Child is a warmhearted, laugh-out-loud story about motherhood’s choices: organic vs. local, paper vs. plastic, staying at home vs. risking it all.
Sarah weaves in some pretty yummy recipes into the story too, even a few that I could see myself trying to whip up, and we all know that’s saying a LOT. So not only will you get a read fun read, you’ll also have some tasty organic recipes to try out as well when you read Julia’s Child!
To win a copy of Sarah’s book, tell me if you’ve ever gone organic or considered going organic? I wish I had the time, money and energy to go organic, but I just don’t!
Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win it as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! Open to US/Canada residents only, and thanks to all the participating authors and publicists for providing the books.
Check back on this post in a few days to see if you’ve been chosen, and as long as there is not a highlighted winner’s name on the top of the blog post, you may enter to win any of the previous books being offered. One entry per person as always! Please include an email address or a uniquely identifying user name when entering to win!
Thanks!

I'd love to but to be honest I just can't extend my grocery budget. we do have a garden and have a few vegetables that help that grocery bill in the summer.

I want to but my local grocery has too small a selection and the prices are too expensive

I always try to buy organic, especially with the dirty dozen (fruits and veggies you should always buy organic, or don't buy them at all). If it's too expensive then I just don't buy that particular fruit or veggie. Whole Foods makes organic frozen veggies that are reasonably priced. I'm also single and childless, so my grocery bill isn't very large anyway. If you can't afford organic, try the farmers market. Going local, even if it's not organic, is still a step in the right direction.
No, I haven't gone organic, I find it too expensive. I do, however, shop at a local store that sells more local produce than anyplace else, other than a farmers market.

I am trying to be organic, but honestly, it doesn't much concern me. I have cut out processed foods...about 99% of the time.

I've considered it, but I don't have the time or the money to plan for going organic right now...
Kind of expensive, but I do go to the farmer's market when in season. Patti cole
I do organic- mostly fruits and veggies and some dairy- especially for my two little ones. Its so pricey though so I really have to pick whats most important.
I would love to go organic, but just can't afford it. I do love gardening in the summer and my little garden is organic, so at least I have that!

Every other week I get a box of local organic produce. I love it and think its worth the price. I was trying to buy all organic milk, eggs, and meat, but it's just so darn expensive. Melissa Rem
I literally JUST went to Whole Foods to check out the prices for organic ingredients. It's so expensive! I don't think I could afford it, at least not from there.
I wish I could but it's too expensive plus I don't have the time to find and buy the organic products...

I buy organic when I can. I eat a lot of bananas and those are definitely organic and so much better. It is hard, and it is expensive, but I think it is important for the future of the planet. If everyone just makes baby steps, that will make a big difference.
I would like to be more organic (I do use some organic items) but the cost is holding me back. My compromise has been to to be more of a locavore. I figure that's got to be a little better.
I should but I haven't. I eat some organic products like bananas but not a whole lot. My vegan sister would be so proud if I did!
I have never gone organic or considered it. I have considered trying to go gluten free but I really don't have the motivation.

Never gone organic, and probably never will. I try and buy fruits and vegetables at farmer's markets when I can though.
haven't and won't. probably should since i work in imports and know all about the pesticides used when the agriculture inspectors find bugs in produce and those bugs aren't "allowed" into our country...
It does get expensive to feed a family with hungry, growing kids but I try to choose organic where I think it matters most- meat and produce- when possible.

I get a few organic things here and there if the price is right!!
I make an effort but not a 100% by any means.
If the price is right I will choose organic but not normally. I will get fruits and veggies from a farmers market when in season.
Nicole
We try to eat healthy, but we have never gone organic. It seems like quite a bit more money.
Thanks for the giveaway.

I've thought about it. Especially after all the blogs I read that the ladies have turned to a more "natural" lifestyle...it kind of freaks me out what is in/on stuff. But I just don't have the money or want to put the effort into trying to change everything we do.

i went organic after i was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago. back then, it wasn't as readily available as it is now. had to join my local co-op, but the great things about shopping there is that all the produce is organic!
Organic??? Hmm, well I do a couple of things organic. They just became habit. Truthfully it's doesn't even matter anymore to me it's just makes it harder for me to get my organic items because I can only buy them from certain specific stores which means another stop.
I would love to go organic, but its hard to without the money!
qweska8402
No way to organic-ness. It's far too expensive for my meager budget. :( It would take A LOT for me to consider it though. I'm far from healthy in my regular life anyway. But at least I'm honest. ;)
i have thought of going organic and actually growing organic, too! sounds really expensive, though! also, i remember going to a fair in the 90s where they offered organic tomatoes and produce ... i'll never forget that experience or the taste of those round, delicious tomatoes!
I buy produce from farmer's markets when I can. This summer I plan to grow a small veggie garden. I have been making my daughter's baby food, too.

I'm the same as many people...my bank account balance won't allow it. I would absolutely love to though!
I am going organic-ish for my daughter. I neither have the time nor the energy to do it for my husband and my self, but she is still young enough that it is fairly easy.
Nope..no organic for me!
Some organic, some not, depends on the item.. I did buy organic beef the other day opposed to just certified angus.. so much better & lots less fat! We grow a garden in the summer so lots of veggies come from that, we use our spent grains from beer brewing to fertalize too!
No, never have. Too expensive.
Iambtinrb
I have not gone organic but have a few affordable tips on eating healthy. In the off season, buy frozen fruits like blueberries and peaches, and frozen veggies. Why? These foods are not preserved with sodium. Much healthier. Buy chicken breasts that are not in broth. Why? That takes you down to 75 mg of sodium per serving.
I buy all of our meat either free-range or organic, and most of our fruits & veggies organic, but that's it. Because our local grocery store doesn't have a great selection, I end up ordering from a couple of places on-line that don't charge a delivery fee if you spend a certain (low) amount!!

I try to buy organic, when I can. It's too expensive!! We have a few local farmers who we buy organic vege's from in the summer. They r cheaper than the grocery stores.

In the past I have purchased grocery items that are organic, but I could never go fully organic. I read that it is not worth it to buy organic if your going to peel or take off the skin, makes sense =)!
I have gone organic and macrobiotic - I never get sick, feel great and highly recommend it. It's alot of work, but so worth it. I have never felt so well in my life - I was obese, tried every diet out there and was getting really sick, sluggish, foggy brained, stressed, etc. My life has taken a 360 just by changing my diet. I go every Sunday to the farmer's market and buy my organic produce. The produce is fresher and more reasonably priced - Jill Fay
I have not went organic. Love the idea, not so much the price/selection in my grocery. I would probably make the semi leap, if Whole Foods was closer than 40 minutes away. LeslieGC
i really thought about it after reading Jackie Warner's book. But i would only do it some of the time. It's really costly.
Carie
I buy some organic things. I would never go completely organic but I think some things are stupid to buy organic. Like I wouldn't need organic cereal.
Thanks!

I try to buy the important stuff organic - meat, dairy & produce. I think that's where you get the best bang for your buck. The cost does suck, but demand is the only thing that'll bring prices down...buying local organic is another low-cost alternative. What finally swayed me, finally, was a comment on "The Doctors" that buying organic turns your food from poison, to medicine.
I buy organic milk, coffee, fruits & vegetables. We joined a local co-op so all our fruits & veggies are organic & mostly all locally grown or grown in the U.S. I really like knowing where our produce comes from & the co-op is definitely more cost efficient than chain grocery stores. I add in organic items here & there to buy when possible.
I would love to but organic is not in our budget right now. Hopefully once we get some of our other things paid off I will have more money to eat organic.
I would love to go organic, but cannot afford it on my teacher's salary. In the summer, we plant a large garden and I have learned to can which has helped us eat more organic vegetables. We also purchase a 1/2 beef yearly and it is organic.
I buy organic milk, eggs, fruit and vegetables. I also do not buy anything with high fructose syrup. That is really hard. You would be surprised at all the products that do. After 2 years of reading labels and taking 4ever to do the grocery shopping, I pretty much know what to avoid and what I can buy. You really have to read. It is a shame that the prices are so high on organic, but luckily I have a Trader Joe's not that far away from home.
I don't go out of my way to buy organic, but I do try to make the best use of my garden in the summertime and buy organic when they are on sale.
No I haven't completely made the switch. I try to eat organic when I can...I just can't afford to buy it all the time.
I go organic on some things. Milk (is actually from a local dairy) and fruits/veggies.
If I had the money and patience I would go organic.
While I think it would really be great to go organic and "clean up" the food I put in my body, but it is super expensive, which makes it difficult to really commit to. I wish I could, though, I really do.

The only thing I consistently buy organic is beef from the farmer's market. I do have a garden, but most of the produce I buy is conventional.
I do partial organic
I'd love togo 100% organic but for now not so much. I love Whole Foods but completely get why people call it "whole paycheck."
I'd love to go organic, but just can't afford it. I am able to find deals occasionally though.
occasionally i will purchase an 'organic' item

I know I should go organic but I have had to pinch pennies for so long that I just cannot bring myself to pay the prices I see on the organic foods in our grocery store. That part of our store is getting bigger all the time so I know a lot of people must be buying it, I just can't spend that kind of money for something that is way cheaper on the other side of the store.
I am unable to afford organic at this time.
Sarah S.
We have a co-op that we buy produce from. All organic and I pick it up from a house nearby. Totally worth it!
-tmd636
The closest I come to 'organic' is knowing the name of the beef I eat...Mom raises cattle, and I order beef from her. Grain fed and pastured, no antibiotics or steriods (plus they are talked to and petted every day!), you can't find safer or tastier beef.
jcsites2002 at hotmail dot com
Haven't tried or considered going organic

I try to be healthy so I'd love to go organic but it's so darn expensive! I need to start getting organic apples, grapes, etc....I hear it really only matters on fruits & veggies where you eat the skin. Haven't made the switch yet though.
ChristinaL
I think I'm too lazy to keep up with it!
I buy organic when it seems to make sense, fresh produce mostly. I also buy organic k-cup coffee, which seems oxymoronic somehow!
I feel much like you: I wish I had the time, money, and energy necessary to go organic!
My family business grows organic prunes and walnuts, so I try to support the organic community whenever possible. It is definitely more expensive, but it is at least 50% more expensive for the grower to receive organic certification than to just sell their fruit as conventional. I definitely try to buy organic carrots, apples, broccoli..anything without a thick skin..and free range/organic meat and poultry whenever I can afford it!
I do Organic as much as I can. Farmer markets are my favorite.

I don't do organic....too pricey for my budget right now. Maybe someday I'll be rich and famous and can give it try then. :)
I have bought organic before and have grown organic but it's really pricey in the grocery store so I stick with the usual.
mryward(at)yahoo(dot)com
Nope. Too pricey, and I'm too lazy as well as too much of an unhealthy eater.
Terri M.
I have thought about it but I don't have the money to do it. Organic isn't cheap so as much as I would like to, it's just not going to happen.
Can't afford it. But we are really trying to grow more of our own: tomatoes, cucumbers, arugula, cauliflower, some apples, oranges, zuchini . . .
I go organic sometimes, but not all the time.
