WHAT HAPPENED TO HANNAH by Mary Kay McComas

Congratulations to:
Joelle!
You have won a copy of What Happened to Hannah!
Please email me at stephanieelliot@gmail.com with your full name and address and I'll get a copy to you!

OK, I’m back and I’ve got another book for you! This one is called What Happened to Hannah by Mary Kay McComas and it’s gotten some great reviews. I’ve zipped through the first part and already the characters are so real and I have the feeling that I need to dive in and get to know them and Hannah’s mysterious story. If only I could sit and read all day every day!

Nora Roberts said of What Happened to Hannah: “Blending poignancy with humor, crafting characters as real and recognizable as your next-door neighbors, Mary Kay McComas weaves stories that brightens the heart.”

Here’s the back-of-the-book blurb:

As a teenager, Hannah Benson ran away from home in order to save herself. Now, twenty years later, the past comes calling and delivers life-changing news: her mother and sister have passed away, leaving Hannah the guardian of her fifteen-year-old niece.

Returning home to bitter memories and devastating secrets, Hannah must overcome her painful past to pave a future with her niece, the last best chance at a family for both of them. She begins to create a new, happier life with her niece and rekindles a relationship with Grady Steadman, one of the few people she’s ever called a friend.

But she can’t forget what she cannot forgive, or lay to rest those ghosts that will not die. Will love and trust—and the truth—give her the strength to stand her ground and fight for what she deserves?

This has nothing to do with the book, other than the fact there is a teenager in the book, and that Hannah left home when she was a teenager. To enter to win a copy of this book, tell me something really dumb you did as a teenager? Here’s an example of something I did – I had to do a report on Athens, Greece. Instead of making copies of the photos in the encyclopedia, I cut the photos out of the book and used them instead. And I was in HIGH SCHOOL! Now, tell me something stupid you did for a chance to win What Happened to Hannah.

Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win it as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! Open to US/Canada residents only, and thanks to all the participating authors and publicists for providing the books.

Check back on this post in a few days to see if you’ve been chosen, and as long as there is not a highlighted winner’s name on the top of the blog post, you may enter to win any of the previous books being offered. One entry per person as always! Please include an email address or a uniquely identifying user name when entering to win!

Better question is what DIDN'T I do that was stupid. The thing that comes to mind was letting my non-licensed (at the time) best friend drive my car. Yeah, I was 17, he was 15 (almost 16). Not the smartest thing in the world but did we know better?!?! lol

I did not do much wrong in high school becuase everyone in town knew me but when I went to college I did everything that I was not supposed to!

At track practice, we did distance training at the park. We would run halfway, and hide under the arch. At the end of practice, we would run back to the park.

I was really stupid when I was in high school. One thing that comes to mind is getting drunk one night, still being drunk the next day, but deciding to drive to the mall because I wanted to get my pictures developed from the night before. Remember when you actually had to get film developed?!?!

I decided to drink for the first time. It was the day before I had to dress up as the Easter Bunny for the annual hunt in the park. Needless to say I was in pain when I had to deal with all those lovely little children.

The day I was supposed to get my license, my friend picked me up for school. We stopped at the gas station before we went to school. While she was backing out, she hit another car. Well, me friend didn't have her license yet, either, only her permit. Needless to say....my parents didn't take me that day. They made me wait.

SO dumb, but I grabbed live wires in my parent's garage and was thrown to the ground by the shock. Never doing that again.

When I was 14, my friend Jason found a credit card and we went to the mall to go shopping with it. He bought a CD player, a cassette tape, and some clothes at the Gap, including a jean jacket for me, before he was caught and the cops were called. He didn't rat me out though.

I walked (with a friend) to Ben and Jerry's from the mall in a winter storm because I was craving Cookie Dough ice cream. I ended up with a cold from doing that. LOL!

I didn't really do anything stupid in high school. If I did I've forgotten about it by now. I guess wasting my money on hair extensions was pretty stupid.

Thanks!

I once told a friend that I went to a Duran Duran concert that I didn't actually go to. My brother promised me he would take me on their next tour. Well they split after that so there was no next tour and the lie to the one friend ended up spreading through the whole school. What was I thinking?!

I wanted to have my name go down in history...you know: make it into the history books?

So what did I do? I wrote my name, or some sort of thing related to me (i.e. *NSYNC 4 eva) on EVERY page of our science textbook.

smart cookie, huh?

The stupidest thing I have ever done was steal from a store. I was purchasing other things but for some reason decided that I would steal this one item. I had the money to pay for it, but for whatever reason, I stole it. I didn't get away with it!

I did so many stupid things as a teenager it's hard to pick one. I would have to say the worst was hitchhiking. We thought we were invinsible and nothing would ever happen to us. This was back in the early 1980's when people would actually pick you up.

Where do I begin? Pretty much everything I did between 13-19 was stupid!!! Besides drinking underage and driving without a license (NOT at the same time!!), the most stupid thing I did was my friends and I hitchhiked with a group of guys (strangers) in the back of their pickup truck to a "bush-party" (bush party = middle of nowhere). Not only was that completely dumb & dangerous, but we got stranded out there and I had to call my brother to pick us up. Oh! Also, once I got caught with open alcohol, under age, in a park, and when he asked for my contact info to write up the ticket, I gave the police officer my EX-friend's name, address, and number (that taught her not to mess around with my boyfriend!).

I was pretty good until college...When I came back home to visit the first time, I decided to do laundry and strip off my clothes I was wearing and wash them too. The problem was my 16 year old sister decided to lock me in the garage buck naked which I remained until my parents came home an hour later. Not good!

Oh, lots of dumb stuff...let someone underage sideswipe a Ferrari (only minor, but still...the paint was $147 in 1979 when the minimum wage was something like $3.35) and a lot more that I can't bring up because I laid those days to rest years ago! ktmixon315

So many dumb things as a teenager. Getting a minor consumption, totaling a truck (two separate incidents). just other general teenager stuff that at the time didn't seem bad, but now that I have nieces and nephews doing the same stupid stuff, I go all postal on them.

My best friend and another friend went to look at colleges for a weekend. We were supposed to take the train from NJ to Mass. We decided to keep the train money and hitch to Boston. We were picked up by many strange but nice people. The funniest were these 2 hippie bus drivers in Conn. who picked us up and drove us to the border of Conn. and Mass. with all the people on their local bus screaming at them the whole way. I hope they didn't get fired. It was pretty stupid of us, but back in the 70's it was common to hitchhike.

I lived in a college town so during our senior year of high school we got acclimated to the college lifestyle a bit early by hanging out with college guys and partying with them. We would lie to our parents and say we were spending the night at a girlfrienf's house who lived near campus. Wow that's pretty stupid and dangerous now that I think about it...

Carly said...

I was a pretty good kid in high school and I never got caught for this but I remember sneaking the guy that I was dating in for sleepovers. Nothing crazy happened because I was a good kid, like I said, but I can't imagine what my Dad would have done upon finding a guy in my bed.

Oh so many stupid things! Many in high school, but one that we did in college sticks out in my mind! At the top of the list was the time that my friends andi just HAD to drive to Cleveland (from Pittsburgh) to get fake IDs. Well, we got stuck in a blizzard, car got hit, highway closed down, had to spend the night there....trying to explain to our parents exactly where we were when they had told us not to go....! Lol. They didn't even have to punish us! (And now, as my oldest gets closer to being a teenager, I cringe....!!)

I learned to not make the same mistakes my older sisters made, so I was pretty good in high school...until college. But my one older sister lied to my parents about the after-prom party being busted by the cops. She figured they would never find out, but my dad who is a teacher at the high school we all attended, heard about the bust in the faculty lounge the next day. I learned to never cover up lies!

Emily said...

I'm sure I could run out of room describing all the stupid stuff I did as a teenager...but...one thing I specifically remember is when I was a junior in high school...we had to read Huck Finn, and I just never got around to it, so when it came time for the quiz on the book, I copied off my friend who was sitting next to me. We both got a score of 45. He hadn't read it, either!

I accidentally set my window sill on fire!! I lived across the road from a cemetary (yes creepy, I know) and a friend was spending the night with me. These two guys that we were dating went and hid out in the cemetary waiting for my Mom to go to bed so they could come over and talk to us. Well it was my bright idea to light a birthday candle and cover it with a STYROFOAM cup! I took the end off, like a lamp shade, but yeah, well...it still burned and caught the wood on fire. Needless to say, my Mom was pissed and said, "why didn't you just ask if they could come over??" DUH!!!

freshman year of college, my best friend came home with me for the weekend, we went to the local amusement park and met some random guy that worked there. Went back home and told my parents that I was gonna drive around and show my friend the town. Nope, we ended up meeting up with that guy and his friend, had a drink or two and then drove home. Not sure what was stupider, going to a random person's house without anyone knowing where we were, or drinking and driving.

Man, I know I wasn't that good. I mostly got in trouble for not doing well in school. I didn't like to do my homework and tested bad. It's sort of sad that I can't think if anything off the top of my head but I never did the drinking, driving without a license or even experiment with my hair. I was always too afraid of the repercussions.

Lindsay Elizabeth said...

Oooh something really dumb, so many choices. BUT the worst must be when my parents left me home alone my senior year for a weekend. I had a party got really drunk and ended up leaving the water running in my upstairs bathroom sink on (I spilled orange soda+ Bacardi O on my white shirt and stuck my shirt in the sink and left the water running when I went to change... never went back to turn it off.... ). Needless to say water started coming through the light fixture/door jam/smoke detector.... it was bad. very very bad.

I went parking one time with this guy in my moms car. It was almost summer (and in Arizona) so we left the a/c on the whole time. Of course when we went to leave the battery was dead. We had to call someone to come jump us. So embarrassing! Of course that is just one of many stupid things I did as a teenager. :)

So many to pick from, many of which would probably get you in big trouble or worse. My friends and I would put all our money together and I'd stand in front of the liquor store and ask "adults" to buy us beer. I never had a problem. I can't imagine buying some kid liquor today.

This is so typical, but when my parents were out of town I used to have friends over, and we stupidly took pictures. Our freshman year of college, my mom was down in DC and went to visit my best friend who was going to school down there, and noticed on her photo wall pictures from some of those parties, recognizing her own house in the pictures. That was an interesting moment for Katie.

When I was 13, I lied to my mother and went somewhere forbidden(nothing salacious happened, but my 13 yr old self, thought I was being rebellious). The stupid part comes in when I confessed at 16. She then informed me that I couldn't be trusted and I basically had to live like a hermit for a year.

Just before I was 16, I threw a party when my parents went out of town. I lied to my married sister that I was spending the weekend with my BF, needless to say, lots of alcohol, kids I didn't even know, huge messes including vomit, and a 25 yo neighbor who camped on her porch watching over us without my knowing - best neighbor ever! Totally got busted, my mom said she knew the moment she came in house...too clean and the lingering scent of Lysol. LeslieGC

When I was a Sr. in H.S., my cousin and I told our parents that we were staying over at each other's houses, then we went over to an older friend's house and got really drunk. Anyhow, our parents found out about it, came to get us (to add to the embarrassment), and in addition to the wicked hangover we ended up with the next day, we were both grounded for a looooong time! Really stupid!

I'm sure I did stupid things but nothing specific comes to mind. When I was in college, though, I was home one weekend and my sister came home from a friend's house high as a kite. It was obvious to me that she'd been smoking pot. My mom, however, didn't have a clue and kept asking my sister what was wrong and why she was acting so weird. My sister ended up going back out with some different friends and DROVE HERSELF! Looking back now, I wish I would have said something because she was obviously in no shape to be driving. Fortunately, nothing happened to her.
