By Sarah Healy
Debut author Sarah Healy has written such a great book, and I’m laughing kind of because of the play on her last name – because Can I Get an Amen? is kind of a ‘healing’ book. I’m not quite through with it but it’s a charming read, and my pal Emily Giffin calls it "an emotional and satisfying novel that's as tender as it is funny... fresh, honest, and addictive." So you know if it's got Em's stamp of approval, it's fabulous!
I’m in love with Ellen who gets dumped by her husband because of their infertility problems and she finds herself back at home with her very God-loving, God-fearing mom, who spurts phrases about the Lord every other sentence, and suggests that Jesus will show Ellen the way.
With a gay brother (how does her mother deal with THAT?) and a sister who couldn’t get the hell outta there fast enough, Ellen’s family has already won me over. I can’t wait to find out what happens when this new man comes into Ellen’s life, or what happens when the dirt bag of a husband who ditched her realizes he made the stupidest mistake of his life!
Here’s the trailer for the book:
And, if you’re so inclined, you really must read Sarah’s Modern Love essay. It’s stunning: When the Words Don’t Fit.
To win a copy of Can I Get an Amen?, which is not a preachy religious book, it just has the theme of religion in it, tell me if you grew up a certain religion, or if you practice a religion now. You don’t have to go into any other specifics. I grew up Catholic, went to Catholic school for 11 years, and now our family attends a Lutheran church.

We never attended church as kids (dad was Catholic, mom was Methodist). So when I got married I joined the church that my husband's family attended. We still go and our kids do the Sunday school thing, too.
Grew up Catholic. Consider myself to be agnostic now married to an atheist. It works for us.
I grew up Baptist, and now occasionally go to the Methodist church. Wanted my kids to have some religious training but then choose for themselves.
I grew up Methodist, and I'm going to a very small Methodist church now.
Grew up Presbyterian and now am Methodist.

Growing up my family didn't do religion or church of any kind. I married into Nazarene.
I also grew up Catholic (my mother worked for the church) and now I attend only occasionally.
I grew up going to the Episcopalian church with my mom, and spent holidays at the Greek Orthodox church with my dad's family. I don't practice any religion now.

My Mom took us to a Christian church. My nanny took us to a Catholic church. I was taught to say my prayers every night by my grandma, who never went to church.
I don't practice any religion now. I am agnostic if put into a category.

grew up in catholic church, after my grandpa died whom I used to go to church with, I stopped going.. I dont practice now, I really didn't back then either, went to spend time with my grandpa.
I grew up in a very religious family. My Grandpa was a preacher and he would preach at any church that would have him, though most times it seemed we ended up at a lot of Southern Baptist churches.
We're Methodist, but we don't currently attend anywhere.
I grew up southern baptist!
grew up without religion. still have none.
Grew up Lutheran. Don't practice anything now
I was raised Catholic. Went to a catholic school for 5 years. Sucked. Now I dont attend any church in particular, but do consider myself Christian.
We only attended church randomly as kids. We don't attend regularly now either but would like to get my kids there more often.

Raised Catholic and still am. Mel Rem
I was born into a Methodist family (attending church up until about 7 years old). We then converted to Mormonism and left after about 4 years. My parents and sister became agnostic while I still searched for the true meaning of that personal relationship with Jesus. I started attending a Pentacostal church and was baptized into the church (after becoming a Christian..but was I always a Christian)?!?. Then I left after a few years and started attending a non-denominational church which I now consider myself. lol. Is that too much?!?!
While I don't attend a church currently, I believe that the relationship is more important than the place in which I worship.

I was raised Catholic & went to Catholic school for 10 years but don't actively practice any religion currently
I was raised a Buddhist..and still am (maybe it was because I am Asian anyway?). I see Buddhism as more of philosophy than a "religion" anyway. But I don't consider myself "religious" that I read scriptures or stuff like that...
Lilian @ A Novel Toybox
I grew up Methodist and don't currently attend church like I should. I think that'll be changing once this baby is born, though.
aggiekristi04
I grew up christian, non-denominational, but we didn't regularly attend church. I still go to a non-denominational church, though my husband and I take out kids to church weekly.

Sarah
I grew up nazarene, but now attend a methodist church on occasion.
qweska8402
I didn't grow up with a religion and still don't follow one. I live my life just trying to be a decent, caring person who knows right from wrong and I try not to judge others (try being the operative word -- no ones perfect right?).
I grew up Lutheran and am not practicing as much as I'd like to be today.
I grew up Catholic, but my family was never super strict about it. However, even as an adult, I have managed to hang on to the Catholic guilt - if I don't abstain from meat every Friday during lent, I feel terrible.
Emily116
I grew up Reform Jewish and am now Modern Orthodox Jewish.
Melissa A from CLC
I grew up Catholic and practiced until my oldest daughter was 12 and the priest told her if she sinned she was going to go to Hell. Now I still pray but don't go to church.

I grew up going to a United Methodist church as that's where my dad went to church.
I was raised Catholic, church every Sunday, Communion, etc but as I got older that isn't really a big part of my life. I do consider myself catholic but don't see why i have to join or be part of a parish in order to be catholic or attend Sunday mass for that matter.
Grew up in a Presbyterian church. Married a Catholic. Baptized first child Catholic, second child Presbyterian and stayed at that church.
Nicole
I'm baptized & confirmed Methodist. Though I no longer attend church services.

Grew up with a mother that did not believe in organized religion... let your conscience be your guidance
I grew up Presbyterian, but have left organized religion behind.
I grew up Roman Catholic, never missing a Sunday mass (we even went on vacation), but it was a lot to take, and I haven't been to church in over 10 years and I'm proudly agnostic now.
i grew up Catholic, but now I believe in just being a good person
I grew up Jewish and still am!

Started out as Catholic, then we were switched to Baptist. My husband was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. Who would have thought that the two of us would grow up into a fun loving pair of atheists :)
I grew up with no religion [mixed faith marriage], married a non-practicing Baptist and still do not practice and sort of religion.
My mom always said that God is in your heart, not in a church. She faced discrimination when she married out Muslim father. She was right, it is in your heart.
I grew up Lutheran, and still attend church with my family
