FRee BooKS: THe DiVoRCe PaRTY, THe oPPoSiTe oF LoVe, aND MoRe!

So, if you’ve come by here once or twice, you obviously know I have a passion for books and for authors, and that I would rather stock my closet with books than with shoes or handbags. I just love everything about a great author and her book (some men authors too, but we’re focusing on the ladies here!)

I’ve have RAVED about both Julie Buxbaum and Laura Dave on my blog and on BettyConfidential.com – they are incredible writers and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE their books.

Here’s what I first wrote about Julie Buxbaum’s The Opposite of Love when it came out in hardcover: The Opposite of Love.

And you can read the interview here: INTERVIEW.

And here’s what I had to say about Laura Dave’s books: INTERVIEW (Note: You may ALSO enter THIS contest too to win The Divorce Party!)

So, these incredibly talented authors would like me to GIVE YOU THEIR BOOKS! And who am I to deny them their right to GIVE YOU THEIR BOOKS?

So yep, it’s another contest on Manic Mommy where you can win some great books. But there’s MORE!

You’ll want to check out Maureen Lipinski’s debut novel called A Bump in the Road, which is a book after my own heart! You guessed it, a mommy pregnancy book! And guess what, I’m giving THAT ONE AWAY TOO!

I had the chance to meet Maureen last night (we are like NEIGHBORS!), and along with Jen Lancaster (sorry - I already gave away her book!), SnarkyMommy, RoadTripMommy and Lisa (who needs to start blogging!) there was much love talk about books and cheesecake, and how I lured my adult babysitter with full bottles of Dewar’s Scotch! We also chatted about plumbers (of which my husband is not, NOT that there is anything wrong with it ... except ass crack), vaginal cerclages (or uterine, whatev), lighting hotel sheers on fire, and the usual whatnot!

So, back to the point of this post:

I am giving away a handful of books to FOUR LUCKY WINNERS! AND many of them are SIGNED by the authors! One is an ARC (advanced reading copy) that I already read, but still, they’re books! And they are FREE TO YOU, written by fabulous authors!

Every one of you will receive a copy of THE DIVORCE PARTY by Laura Dave to start off your awesome prize package of books!

The books I have to give away are:

The Divorce Party by Laura Dave (4)

The Opposite of Love by Julie Buxbaum (2)

A Bump in the Road by Maureen Lipinski (2)

Repeat After Me by Rachel DeWoskin (1)

Wife in the North by Judith O’Reilly (2)

Perfect on Paper by Maria Murnane (2) ... PS, read an interview HERE.

Draining the Sea by Micheline Aharonian Marcom (1)

On the Divinity of Second Chances by Kaya McLaren (2)

Dragons Prefer Blondes by Candace Havens (2)

The French Mistress by Susan Holloway Scott (2)

So, isn't this great!?!? All of these free books? And all you have to do is leave me a comment on why I should send YOU a package containing an assortment of FIVE of these awesome reads, and you’ll be entered to win. And yes, co-workers and family members MAY enter this one!

All right, GO TO IT! And GOOD LUCK!

You should send me some books because my husband will be home from Iraq soon and that means no more staying up late on the computer because he has to get up super early. I have to be able to read in bed while he snuggles up with me and gets his sleep since I sleep way later than he does!!

I need some books because sadly and with much embarrassment I have NOT read an entire novel from start to finish for at least four years! This IS my summer to start and these books sound like the motivation I need, that and a martini on the deck to go with my reading pleasure :)

Amanda said...

I need books like you would not believe. British telly is CRAP in the summer - not that it's that great any time of year but it definitely takes a dip in the summer which is really inconsiderate when you're up at all hours with kids that don't believe it's night time and sleep time because it's still daylight at 11.30pm. Black out blinds don't work and I need something to entertain me for the long haul.

You should send me the books because I just bought a home and now can't afford to buy books. Books are my escape! Need Books! Barnes and Noble is my Disney World.

OK, so I've never entered any of your contests...and OK.....I've never really ever read any books (that I can remember!), but I am trying to widen my horizons so to speak! So, if I win, I PROMISE to read them and give you a critique of what I thought about them (if you wanted me to!). It might be a great way for me to have some much needed "ME TIME," an ESCAPE if you will........You know I would never go out and buy a book on my own, so give a sista a break! 143

You should send me a package because "Divorce Party" sounds like something I may very well need in the future if the Scotch continues to flow in my house (and I don't drink it!).

Seriously though, I mostly read serial killer novels, unless someone, (like you) sends something else my way and tells me it's good! So see? I NEED them!

I would be grateful to receive any of the books. I must lose myself in print immediately to erase the memories of my mother's recent visit to my home. Nothing else can erase the image burned in my mind of blood squirting across the bathroom from her naked breast (complications from a recent lumpectomy). My eyes, my eyes!!
Thanks, and I really love your blog.

Okay-- so please don't enter me in the contest, because with all the review books I'm getting these days, I don't think it would be fair to take a chance away from someone else. BUT-- I just had to comment that I received The Opposite of Love for review a few months back, and I LOVED it. Fantastic book, and so awesome of you to do this huge giveaway!! You rock!

You should send me some books because with a new baby and an almost 2 year old the only chance I have to be alone is when I am feeding the baby and reading a book (and I am really bad at returning library books) so I could use some more books to read

Shelley said...

I need the books because I just moved and I can't find the library. Honestly. I have no internal GPS system, and I get lost just leaving the house here. Please send me the books and save me from myself. Oh, and there's nothing on the TEEVEE except some stupid reality crap, and I'm certainly not going there. I'll wait for the good reality crap to come back. Like Amazing Race. And Survivor.

Aimee said...

Please send me the books! Why? well, I am a struggling writer, I mean a really struggling writer, and nothing is more inspiring (or exciting) to a struggling writer than a big ole box of fresh books proving "yes, it can be done" and providing lessons on how to do it on every magical page. Thanks for the contest, Manic!

aahcoffee said...

I need these books because I go through books way too fast. I check out 12 books at a time from the library, and finish them in plenty of time to get them back, but NO-O I have to return them late...every stinkin' time. I pay more fines at that library than anyone else I know. Free books, for me to keep, would be fantastical. :)

Alani said...

I need some books because all year long I teach middle school kids. The books we read together turn my head to mush because I've read those particular books a bunch of times over and over again. So the summer is time for adult reading and fun books I can get lost in!

Almost 6 years ago my ex husband left me and our then 4 year old son for someone else. I was 5 months pregnant with our second child at the time.

Although it was one of the hardest times in my life I came through it on top. I have learned so much from that experience and am proud of the mother I am today.

I have a ton of friends who are going through what I went through. Sadly. I would like to be considered because I want to share some good reads (the divorce party in particular) with those friends in hopes that I can help them come out on top as well.

Pretty soon I'm going to be spending two days in the hospital then at home with a newborn baby. I need something to read to keep me from going totally bonkers or doing too much during those first 6 weeks after delivery.

I will definitely put my two cents in for this contest. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to wind a stack of books, considering how fast I go through them. I love to read! I have read authors you've suggested before and there has never been a miss!
/crossing fingers that I have a snowball chance in hell this time!

How about rescuing me from my current "Princess Diaries" rut? I'm stuck in teen fiction and I can't get out! (No offense to Meg Cabot who is hysterical, but I really really REALLY need to read something about, you know, a grown up?!)

Kristin said...

I would love to win a stack of new books too! It will keep me occupied while I attempt to sit still and not move my head after my surgery.

Denise said...

You should send me some books because I am so awesome! :) LOL! I love love love to read. My husband makes fun of me because when I come home from the library I have a HUGE stack of books that I can't even carry! He calls me a nerd! I'm always on the look out for something new and great to read! My library is pretty limited on books so I'm running out of good stuff! Please send me some books!

Kathryn said...

reasons to send me the books:

1. long flight next week = great reading opportunity

2. Haemorrhaging money at the vet lately so can't afford new books (no, really, I can't right now, but at least the mutts are healthy)

3. they all sound WONDERFUL and I love discovering new writers

thanks!

Books? Did someone say BOOKS? Well, I should definitely receive these. There's not an inch of extra space in my house for anything but books (did you know they stack more easily than Legos, Lincoln Logs AND baby dolls?) Plus, I would share said books with my book group, which includes at least one other reader of your blog. Thanks!

I would love for you to send me some books because I just quit smiking and reading keeps my mind and my hands busy!

I love to read but I dont have anything to read currently so I would love to win some books!

I'd love some new books. You should give them to me because I'm surrounded by tons of books in my office - but they're all boring and heavy and dusty and clunky. none of them are appropriate for a summer day at the beach. I NEED SUMMER BOOKS. Unfortunately, I have a stack of dead-beat clients who owe me a ton of money, so summer books are not in the budget. :( And, obviously, you have excellent taste in music - I expect the same in your reading tastes, too. Share! :)

Steph-you should send them to me because you haven't seen me in 15 years and I love to read!

I would love Divorce Party. I was in the book store and saw it. I almost bought it, for some reason, I didn't. Maybe cuz there are some stronger force telling me "no no no". Manic will give you the book! hummm Please, please, pretty please? And thanks for creating a blog I look forward to reading..

I would love to be sent some books. Reading is my passion! And with summertime here, there is no better way to spend a lazy day than to spend it reading in a quiet, air conditioned room... so peaceful and restful. OK, so I'm a mom of three who doesn't get moments like that too often, but at least if I did get a moment like that, I'd have something to read, right? :)

LaVonne said...

I would love to have some of the books you are giving away. I'm the wife of a depressed man and mother of 4 boys and I work full time. Not to mention I'm a recent survivor of a religious cult. Books, when I have time to read them, are my escape and my "me time". I never do this kind of thing, but I saw your link on Jen Lancaster's site...love her...and thought...why not?!

LaVonne said...

Ok, I just left a comment, but had not created a blog account...there was no possible way for you to contact me. : )

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

LaVonne--sounds like you have an interesting life and should write something too! Also, you didn't need to create an account - if I pull your name, then I'd just say LaVonne--you win! Good luck.

And yeah, Love Jen Lancaster! She's awesome--thanks for finding me.

One more thing--there is a new memoir coming out about a man going through depression ... wonder if it might be of interest to you or your hubby? If you want, email me at manicmommy@comcast.net and I will try to find out the name of the book. The guy's name is Dan I think and he's a dad blogger ....

Be well!

Laurie In WV said...

Why should you send me books?

The answer is simple. Books are my crack! I don't drink. I don't smoke. I only have sex with the one man I'm allowed to have sex with....

I have two things...

BOOKS
and
Chocolate...

Be a dear....send both!! Feed my addiction!

Kirsten said...

I would like some books because I LOVE books, especially the way a new book smells and also because unlike previous summers, now my kids are 7 and 4 and I'm hoping I will actually get to SIT at the beach or the park and READ rather than running after them to ensure they don't drown or fall to their deaths. So pick me. :-)

Hi Manic!... Wow! What a great contest!... Well you know I read EVERYTHING you even mention on your blog... and even what your other blogger friends mention. The past 2 weeks I read Everyone is Beautiful & Bright Side of Disaster and tonight I finished Pretty in Plaid!!!!... And if I win the ARC - I will read it IMMEDIATELY and send it on to one of your other followers. I have never read an ARC and the idea of possibly reading an ARC is soooo exciting!!!!

Thanks!
Christine

You should send me these books because I really need to get back into reading more and more. More importantly I really need an excuse to stop reading the death, kill, murder books and I havent found one yet. If I won these books I would get back to reading the chic lit books and stop being depressed about my life!!!

Because I am your BBFF and you MISS ME TERRIBLY!!! :)

You would greatly help fill the restless hours I lay awake listening to my husband snore if I were to receive one or two of those books.

Tanya said...

You should send me the books because, my Aunt lives in your town, so I could pick them up next time I go that way. It would save you postage.

And because I'd review them on my blog. :)

PS. for anyone interested I have a couple book giveaways on my blog, too.

Mame said...

You could send me a book because I'm a ramen-eating writer living on hope-and-gin dreams?

-OR- because I raise three kids, five cats, and a more than a few high hopes.

-OR- because I embody the essence of "never give up", which includes begging for books.

-OR- Because I think it's awsometastic you're doing this in the first place.

-OR- Because I linked here from another super cool page and clicked 'follow'.

I need some books because a) Books are my crack, 2) I am always looking for new authors to get addicted to, and 3) When I don't have anything to read, I spend way to much time on Twitter and Facebook, and I have to say, social networking is making me me stupid. You don't want me to be stupid, do you?

Becky W. said...

I need you to send me some books because I NEVER have time to go to the library without my 2 and 4 year old in tow. Needless to say I don't make it too far into the adult fiction section before having to head off to the children's area. There are only so many times I can read the likes of The Very Hungry Caterpillar without really needing some grown-up lit.

I love your passion for books! It's AWESOME. Sadly, I am not asking for any books. Just wanted to leave you a comment because I, too, love books.

I would LOVE more books for my bookshelves. But the three of us are living in a one-bedroom apartment in NYC, and space is a commodity we don't have much of. But again, kudos to you for giving people books. YEAH!!!!

You should send me the books because I love to read. It's a nice escape after a long day at work. I also escape my workday by taking a good novel to the break room or the ladies room (I have set up a little reading lounge there...don't tell my male boss!) I also share all my books with my Mom and three aunts. So, by sharing the book luv with me, you'll be sharing the luv with 4 more wonderful ladies!

Oooo, I so need books. I am recently rediscovering that I need time for myself andreading is a great way to spend that time. I have been devouring books, I was THRILLED with The Opposite of Love when I read it(and yes, I did a lot of crying during it), and I need someone to introduce me to new authors to read, as I've just about finished all of Philippa Gregory's books :)

Valerie G said...

I would love to win books! I love to read and while I haven't read anything by these authors, I'd love to be able to.

shopgirl said...

Ok - I'm going to play the "unemployment" card here. I need a "win" right now. 6 months of being unemployed and a crummy job market in my area have got me down in the dumps to say the least. I've even been going to my local library for books instead of buying them - but the new puppy in the household - yeah, she loves books too - $25 to replace a David Sedaris book!

So please.. brighten shopgirl's day over here (since I haven't been able to do much shopping lately!)

Thanks!!

I eat, breathe and sleep books! I love, love, love to read! (And I am so totally jealous that you get to hang with Jen Lancaster but that's beside the point!) I pass my books around to several of the girls at work - they always come to me when they are looking for something good to read - this will give me some fresh material for them (and me too!). Thanks Manic - you ROCK!!

You should send me an assortment of these books because you love me. And because I'm pregnant and you cannot possibly deny a pregnant woman something that will make her happy. Have I mentioned that I'm carrying twins? That means sending me an assortment of these books will make me TWICE as happy.

C'mon, Manic. Love me.

I'm dying for The Opposite of Love. I've looked around stores in my country and I could find no one. Besides this one I really want, I hope I can read other books to make this summer rich with pleasant reads. Also I've read some positive reviews on The Divorce Party and On the Divinity of Second Chances. I want to read them so much. I'm crossing my fingers!! Happy summer and happy reading.
