THE WEDDING BEAT by Devan Sipher

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

The Wedding Beat

I was really psyched for this one because guess what, it’s like chick lit but written by a man and from a man’s point of view! Yay! A man should have to search for love too!

The Wedding Beat by Devan Sipher tells the classic New York story of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy assigned to write article about girl’s wedding.”

I’ve not yet had a chance to read it, but early reviews say that fans of Emily Giffin (MY FAVE!), Jennifer Weiner (another great!), Lauren Weisberger and Jonathan Tropper will love this book. And another one of my favorites, Laura Dave, said this of the book: "A fresh and fun take on finding (and committing to) love."

How can you go wrong with a line-up like THAT!

So the author, Devan Sipher, is a real-life wedding columnist, and has written about more than one thousand weddings. That's a LOT of cake! Do you think he gets to eat cake at all those weddings?

He has written for the New York Times “Vows” column. So he’s got a TON of insight on weddings. You KNOW he’s slipped a few real secrets into his fiction, which is what I love about books like this one and Devil Wears Prada – secrets from the industry are bound to be included.

Here’s the blurb:

Gavin Greene isn't only a hopeless romantic, he's a professional one: He writes the wedding column for a prize-winning newspaper, covering A-list parties from coast to coast.  But there's a thin line between being a hotshot reporter on assignment...and being a single guy alone on a Saturday night.

Everything changes on New Year's when Gavin meets Melinda, a travel writer with an adventurous spirit.  A moonlit walk across a Manhattan rooftop seems to seal the deal, but she slips away.

Gavin crisscrosses New York City to find her again. And he learns there's something worse than losing the woman of his dreams—having to write an article about her wedding.

Read some of Devan’s articles and more about the book here:

You can go to The Wedding Beat’s Facebook page here:

If you’d like a chance to win The Wedding Beat, tell me something that happened at a wedding that was interesting or exciting. I’ll tell you one: The first wedding Mr. Manic and I attended after we had our first child, somehow, he and I ended up in an empty CLOSET at the hotel. Uh-huh, OH YES WE DID!!!!!

Your turn! Share a fun wedding story and you’ll be entered to win The Wedding Beat! And later this week, I have two more books to share – These Girls by Sarah Pekannen and Jeff, One Lonely Guy so please come back! These are both amazing books too.

Also, I think I may announce winners like I did the last time - list them on a separate blog post – probably all of them at the end of the month – let me know if that was easier for all of you, because it sure was easier for me! And don't forget to check the last two books to enter them if you haven't already - You Are What You Wear, and also How To Eat A Cupcake are still up for grabs!

Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win it as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! Open to US/Canada residents only, and thanks to all the participating authors and publicists for providing the books.

One entry per person as always! Please include an email address or a uniquely identifying user name when entering to win!

I went to a wedding once and a girl came out of the bathroom with her dress tucked into her thong and walked through the entire reception hall until someone could tell her! I felt bad for her, but it was hilarious.

Big Dave and I got married on a Sunday because I thought that getting married on 7/7 would totally rock. Anyhoo...he calls me the morning of the wedding in a small town in Georgia to tell me that the shoes with his tux weren't black...they were WHITE. Yes. Fortunately, our across the street neighbor owned a men's store in town and he opened up to get us a pair for Dave to wear. Miracle! I don't know how we would have made it otherwise...the wedding was at 2:00 and the stores didn't open until 1:00! :) ktmixon315

Memorable wedding moments I've experienced:
1. Niece's wedding delayed due to hungover bridesmaids barfing in the restroom.
2. Plate of hot hors d'oeuveres dumped on the mother of the bride (that would be me) by a passing waiter
3. Wedding party bypassed the receiving line to huddle in the corner and smoke grass
4. Limo bus carrying the wedding party lost an axle on the interstate on the way to the church
5. The usual rained-out outdoor weddings, reception decorations gone astray in the mail, uninvited guests at a sit-down reception who re-arrange tables to their liking

Most of my wedding stories aren't fun, just weird. I once went to a christian church ceremony that lasted 8 minutes, from walking into the church to the bride & groom walking out. I had barely started to pay attention & it was over.

And at one wedding I spent the reception in the bathroom consoling my friend the bride while her groom was in a police car in the parking lot (totally false accusations & they are actually still together)

At my wedding reception someone picked me up in a giant bear hug that ripped the zipper on my dress! Of course I wasn't wearing a bra with the dress.... It was a good thing the reception was almost over bc there was no salvaging the zipper!

I would have to say that the most interesting thing happened at my wedding. From 2 mins in to be pronounced husband and wife because the minister was so hung up during rehearsal about how the bridesmaids were walking down the aisle to all the relatives on my mother's side leaving the reception because we didn't have booze and going to Cabela's. Our reception is over at 8pm but I was okay with that...it gave me more time to enjoy being with my new husband. <3

I thought It was weird but my SIL wouldn't allow any of our children at her wedding. Like not even in the same building! Not her best intro to the family! Needless to say no one likes her any better now ;)

at my cousin's wedding last summer, my mom tried to hook me up with one of the groom's friends - who was self-proclaimed "single and ready to mingle."

At my own wedding, when my Dad gave his little speech he said "Thank you all for being with us here to witness this marriage that was just consummated..."

Uh, Dad - I don't remember slipping off to consummate the marriage, but thanks for announcing to all that we had. Still makes me laugh today. That's just a typical story for my Dad.

When my sister got married at Yosemite Park, my then 2 year old daughter announced that "she wanted to go home, RIGHT NOW!" as soon as we got into our rooms. Why? There was no TV. And the fact that several members of my family got food poisoning! It's been over 20 years, so I guess things worked out!

My bf and I are going to a wedding in a few weeks. My mom gave me some of her mother's jewelry to wear. It's pretty cool because my grandmother died before I was born and I still get to have a small piece of her for the fun day.

At my wedding, after my new hubby and I fed each other cake, someone handed me what I thought was a napkin. I started to walk away with the "napkin" in my hand. It ended up being part of a table cloth. I almost pulled the entire cake and desserts off the table. Thankfully it all stayed in place but it was an almost oops.

I remember going to a wedding about 12 years ago and right in the middle of the ceremony the flowers on the side of the alter caught on fire! It was so hard not to laugh!!! :)

For my second (current) marriage, my husband played golf that morning and because he was rushed to get ready, left the marriage license at home. Yes, he rushed back to get it.

A couple of fun things on our wedding day:

When we were saying our vows my husband started crying and the whole church pretty much started crying too and then the minister forgot to tell us to kiss.

At the end of the reception we were dancing to "I've Had the Time of my life" which was going to be the last song of the reception and all of a sudden the power went off. It did not come back on and we had to find all of the rest of our stuff in the dark. Needless to say that was pretty memorable! :)

Crystal said...

OMG MaNiC!! Oh no you didn't!!! You go girl!! LOL

It wasn't really a wedding, but more of a renewal of vows...well my grandparents 50th anniversary. There is a wedding picture of my grandpa holding up the cake knife and just laughing away. Then there's a similar one of my grandma holding the knife to my grandpa and he has his face twisted in pain with his tongue out. It was too cute!!

That was 8 years ago! :)

At the end of my wedding night we were all having drinks back at the hotel bar when a bar fight broke out between some of our wedding guests and another group. We managed to pull my sister out of the mix and then my husband and I retreated to our room before the cops showed up. Classy.

My wedding reception was on a small island in the middle of a Lake. All of the guests were transported via various boats of friends and family. Numerous times a day a ferryboat passes by the island and some of the locals like to flash the boat as it passes. One such local was a guest at my wedding and after she had had a few drinks she flashed that boat for all she was worth. My mother-in-law happened to be right in the line of fire!! I couldn't stop laughing. Another very memorable moment was when my father and I were transporting some of the guests back to shore his boat broke down. That was before we had cell phones and I was stuck with my father on my wedding night in the freezing cold for a few hours until my husband finally realized there must have been something wrong and resuced us! It was a great wedding with many wonderful memories!

I cant think of a fun wedding story. They're all the same to me. I am going to Cozumel, Mexico for a wedding in June, though. Maybe I'll get a fun story out of that!

amandie2 said...

It isn't a fun story, but it's the most memorable wedding story I have.

My best friend got married (4 years ago tomorrow) and I was her maid of honor. She told me early on that I would have to give a toast. I immediately freaked out and continued stressing about it for the entire engagement. I was so nervous about it that I never even planned anything to say.

On the big day, when she, her husband, his best man, and I were all standing in front of 100 people and it was my turn to speak, I looked at her and burst into tears. I never even started my toast. Worst wedding memory EVER.

Jenn3128 said...

The groom at a wedding I went to started off his speech by saying "I don't know why we're doing this...". Still not sure if he meant the wedding or the speech.

Jeffie T said...

I went to a destination wedding once and one of the attendees THOUGHT she was a bride's maid. She didn't find out until 10 minutes before the wedding that she wasn't. So she spent the ceremony making snide remarks loudly about the actual bride's maid. It was awesome, mostly because I wasn't the bride, or the bride's maid.

My Uncle from Portugal(speaks no English)came to Canada for my nephew's wedding and decided to say a toast. Well this ended up being more of a sermon. For those who understood it was alright but for those who did not just got to sit back and be entertained because the mc was doing a perfect imitation right beside him. All in fun really my uncle had a good laugh also.

They say something always goes wrong at a wedding and at ours (over 20 years ago now-- wow!) the limo never showed. So we had wedding guests walking around and around the church to see if perhaps he'd parked somewhere else. (It was a huge church.) So in the end my stepfather owned a Cadillac so we left the church in that. In the pictures you can't tell we're not in a limo, but I know...

Denise said...

I was in a friend's wedding in Savannah, and for the bridal party instead of a limo we had a trolley drive us around, which was fun and cool.

Not so much 'fun' as 'memorable'...the wedding party was staying at the hotel adjoining the center where the ceremony & reception were being held, and the A/C was out in all the rooms on our floor - bride, matron of honor and mother of the bride all getting ready in one HOT room - ICK!!!

canative66 said...

Not really fun but one wedding we attended ended up with a few relatives from each side fighting at the reception. And I don't mean fighting in the verbal sense. Punches were being thrown bodies flying around. It was like being in a NJ Housewives episode only this happened over 20 years ago.

I was dancing in a bridesmaid dress that was the type of fabric that doesn't give, like at all...(and I'm a small person) and while dancing to "I like big butts and I cannot lie...." I totally ripped it up the seam.

My fiance still laughs about it.

I had a bridesmaid throw her drink on me after accusing me of hitting on her man. While I was in the bathroom cleaning up, she stumbled through the doorway and slurred, "sssshorry, wrong girl".

Her boyfriend was so mortified by her behavior, he spent a lot of time apologizing. We went to dinner 2 wks later and dated for 8 months.

I hope to have a funny wedding memory to share after our July wedding but for now I'll share one about my sisters wedding. She was your typical uptight NYer who wanted everything perfect - no gag gifts from the DJ no necklaces or proprs of any kind. Hald way through the reception the best man entered dressed in a full chicken suit and did the worm....all sorts of props were distributed immediately by the DJ....we still crack up about it.

I love this question! Makes me remember my sister's wedding. One of my mom's friends was getting down to T-Pain's "Apple Bottom Jeans". She was definitely on the tipsy side, so when the "Low, low, low, low" part came on she got low & fell backward ending up with a broken wrist. LOL Such awesome memories!!! :)

I was in my cousin's wedding a few years ago. It was her second marriage, but apparently her now-husband's ultra-catholic conservative family didn't know that. During the best man speech, the groom's brother accidentally made a joke about the groom being the second husband in the bride's life. Oops.

I prefer to see the winners weekly. Just makes it more fun to see how is winning as we go along. As far as Wedding's go, I stood up in my sister's wedding and was out back smoking with no one knowing while my sister was throwing the bouquet. OOPPS!

At the wedding of a coworker, the best man started his speech by saying "our family never really liked Amy, but I've learned a lot about love in the last year. So here's to the happy couple." Um, what?

When my hubby and I were still only dating, we went to a wedding and he caught the garter and I caught the bouquet - totally unplanned. Then he had to put the garter on me and my parents were there harrassing him with the evil eye. Needless to say, I guess it was in the cards for us!

I attended a wedding once where the groomsmen got up to give speeches. He gave a great speech about being in love and being commited to each other and of course being faithful to one another. The groomsmen then turned to the crowd and told the men that it was time they gave up their key to the newlyweds home. Sure enough all the men attending the wedding got up and dropped their keys off in front of the bride and groom. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen!

I went to a wedding once where one of the bridesmaids got so drunk that she broke her champagne glass banging it on the table and then proceeded to fall flat on her butt trying to do the electric slide. It was kind of funny, but sad that the attention was no longer on the bride, but on the crazy, drunken bridesmaid instead.

Around the time of my wedding, swing dancing was kind of popular. My 19-year-old brother danced with I think every female at our reception. At the end of the night, he gave me a hug before my new husband and I left, and he was soaked with sweat from the continuous dancing!

Another anecdote from my wedding: our limo driver got lost on the way to our hotel on our wedding night. We didn't get there until around 1 am.

I went to a wedding were the reception was outside under a tent. The only floor was the dance floor and the rest was grass/dirt. Well it had been raining a lot the last few days so the ground was soaked. All the women kept getting their heels sunk into the ground. It was a challenge trying to walk with out sinking.

As we were posing for pictures just minutes before the ceremony, we noticed that one bridesmaid's dress was black...and the other 7 were navy. They looked almost the same, but outside in the daylight you could definitely tell one was black! Made no difference, it was a beautiful, memorable day.

A bunch of guys in the wedding party stripped down to their underwear and jumped into the hotels' outdoor pool really late at night (or early in the a.m?). It was just a fun night, where a bunch of high school friends, all older and responsbible adults/parents got to hang loose and be carefree for a night. Jill Fay

When I was 13 yrs old, I attended my older sister's engagement party. I tried the punch and found it tasted funny. We later found out that someone had added some alcohol to the punch.

I grew up in a small town in the Midwest. My husband grew up in a big city. When we got married many years ago, in my small hometown, the guys stole the bride (me) and we rode around town for a while. This was a common occurrence in small town USA, evidently not in big cities. My husband got soooo mad and got his buddies together for a fight. We had to talk him down and explain that this was 'normal'. Ahhhh, fun times.

At my own wedding, just before the ceremony was about to start, my maid of honor remembered she forgot the ring back in our hotel room. It was actually perfect because I had just walked down the aisle, was extremely nervous and so emotional I was sobbing already. My husband-to-be was also about to lose it. So when we realized what happened, it broke the ice, the guests all had a good laugh, and we had a couple of minutes to relax while someone ran to the hotel room to get the ring (was only 50 steps away thankfully).

We had McDonalds cheeseburgers brought out during our reception around 10:30. They were a hit. So much so, that after the reception and apparent after party, some of our college friends ended up in the kitchen looking for leftover burgers. The hotel security found them lost looking at large glass serving pieces. They didn't get in trouble and the security guard even found the burgers for them. It's been almost 5 years and the guys still bring it up as their favorite wedding.

I haven't gone to a lot of weddings but I can tell you an embarrassing story about my own (don't judge me! lol). I was nine months pregnant and the hubby and I decided to take a trip to city hall and get hitched. I was huge and all I could fit into were these ugly overalls. Well, the hubby was working two jobs so we got married on a Thursday in between them. He got out of his first job, met me at city hall, we got married, then he went to his second job. My mom and sister (I think) through rice and some of it landed down my bra. Apparently I didn't get it all out like I thought I did because after leaving city hall I went apple picking with my mom, sister and nephew. It was September and hot. I did a lot of walking and I was really big so I sweat a lot. When I got home I found some fully cooked rice in my bra. I know, how embarrassing!!!
