However, you only have to post ONCE and you will have the chance to win each of the books.

It’s OFFICIALLY summer so I can officially bring out these two books which are BEACH BOOKS! The unique thing about The Silver Boat by Luanne Rice and Maine by J. Courtney Sullivan is they both take place in the family’s beachfront properties.

First up, Maine. Some of my most favorite childhood memories are from our trips to Scituate, Maine to visit extended family. I remember walking along the beach, and the craggled rocks along the shore, and racing to the dime store to get candy every afternoon with distant, distant cousins whom I loved but now cannot even remember their names. I have such vivid memories of those times and wish I had a beach house that I could take my family to every summer.

I LOVED J. Courtney’s first book Commencement, and the minute I heard she had a new one out, I had to get it. She’s one of those authors that I have come to love and crave. So, while I have not had a chance to read Maine yet, this one is coming with me on our trip to Chicago. It’s also a BIG book, which makes this one of the times I wish I owned a Kindle, but it’s also a book cover that I adore, so if I had a Kindle, I wouldn't be able to gawk and caress the cover as I have been doing! I have read the first chapter, and let me tell you, this family saga will suck you in.

Here is what Maine is about:

In her best-selling debut, Commencement, J. Courtney Sullivan explored the complicated and contradictory landscape of female friendship. Now, in her highly anticipated second novel, Sullivan takes us into even richer territory, introducing four unforgettable women who have nothing in common but the fact that, like it or not, they’re family.

For the Kellehers, Maine is a place where children run in packs, showers are taken outdoors, and old Irish songs are sung around a piano. Their beachfront property, won on a barroom bet after the war, sits on three acres of sand and pine nestled between stretches of rocky coast, with one tree bearing the initials “A.H.” At the cottage, built by Kelleher hands, cocktail hour follows morning mass, nosy grandchildren snoop in drawers, and decades-old grudges simmer beneath the surface.

As three generations of Kelleher women descend on the property one summer, each brings her own hopes and fears. Maggie is thirty-two and pregnant, waiting for the perfect moment to tell her imperfect boyfriend the news; Ann Marie, a Kelleher by marriage, is channeling her domestic frustration into a dollhouse obsession and an ill-advised crush; Kathleen, the black sheep, never wanted to set foot in the cottage again; and Alice, the matriarch at the center of it all, would trade every floorboard for a chance to undo the events of one night, long ago.

By turns wickedly funny and achingly sad, Maine unveils the sibling rivalry, alcoholism, social climbing, and Catholic guilt at the center of one family, along with the abiding, often irrational love that keeps them coming back, every summer, to Maine and to each other.

I know how much you all love to read the first chapters, so here it is. But do be warned, once you read it, you will NOT want to stop!
MAINE FIRST CHAPTER

The Silver Boat
By Luanne Rice

Next up is Luanne Rice’s The Silver Boat, another beach house family story, but this time, they all congregate on Martha’s Vineyard. I bet many of you are familiar with Luanne Rice as she is the author of 22 consecutive NYT bestsellers! I have to confess here that I have yet to read a Luanne Rice, but I am very excited to be introduced to her. So see, even I get to find out new authors through MaNiC MoMMy!

Read the First Chapter Here: THE SILVER BOAT

Here is the book’s summary:

From the beloved New York Times bestselling Luanne Rice comes a heartwarming yet heart-wrenching portrait of three far-flung sisters who come home to Martha's Vineyard one last time. Their mother's beach house is the only place any of them ever found true happiness and they need to begin the difficult process of letting go. Memories of their grandmother, mother, and their Irish father, who sailed away the year Dar turned twelve, rise up and expose the fine cracks in their family myth-especially when a cache of old letters reveals enough truth to send them back to their ancestral homeland.

Transplanted into the unfamiliar, each sister sees life, her heart, and her relationship to home in a new way. But how do they let go of a place that contains the complicated love of their imperfect family? Without the house, where will they be together?

The novel is a season on Martha's Vineyard; a mission to Ireland; a cast of friends, including one wildly off-the-grid Zen genius; passionate love in the surf; and three very different sisters with lives filled with beauty, sorrow, and deep love they'd never been quite sure they could trust. The Silver Boat is Luanne Rice at her very best, complete with her singular talent for capturing a family in all its flawed complexity.

There. There's my new mantra!

First to post! Whoo-hoo! Favorite Beach memory would have to be deciding to go to UC San Diego while walking on the beach by the school. Best decision ever!

I have now favorite beach memory. I'm not really in to water or sun, so the beach is one of the last places I spend time. Although, the Maine beaches seem like they would be nice, backdropped by much more interesting landscape. TaraUB in IN

My favorite beach memory is from last summer when I went to visit my sister in Boston. I asked her to take us to the beach. My two boys enjoyed playing in the sand and water while my sister and I sat and chatted. It was a wonderful day.

My stepmother's family has had a beach house (actually two) that she recently inherited (along with a sibling or two) that we have gone to every year since I was ten years old...I'm now 48. It is never an easy trip, but it always has wonderful memories and we keep going in spite of everything. It has made me question a time or two if I'm adopted...but my mother swears I'm not. ktmixon315

I love the beach, but I don't have a favorite beach memory. My family vacationed at the Outer Banks in North Carolina for over 10 years. I loved going there because it's so peaceful and not crowded like some other touristy beaches. My favorite thing to do is park my beach chair in the surf, so I can read and tan.

My favorite beach memory would be several years ago when my entire family - brother, sister, parents, uncle, granparents, etc. all vacationed on the Outer Banks for a week. That week has a mystical, childhood-like feel for me. As I get older, I realize how much effort it is to get everyone together like that and now that my brother has passed, it is a week to cherish forever.

Favorite beach memory is my honeymoon and my husband who had never seen the ocean before. First thing he did was drink and then exclaim, "That's really salty!" And he then proceeded to chase crabs on the shore with a little switchblade and then was chased in return!

I didn't really grow up with a "beach" near me, but we used to go to a state park in the summer time that had a giant pool and we called it "the beach". My aunt had 9 kids and she always was going as long as the sun was shining. I spent a lot of time with her there and loved every minute. To this day, when I think of "the beach" I can't help but smile!

I have so many beach memories from when I was a kid and we went to Myrtle Beach SC almost every summer. The most memorable was when I was about 4 and my family and about 12 assorted aunts, uncles and cousins went together. We got a huge beach house And it was so much fun. I was so young but I still remember it well.

My only beach memory is when we went to Myrtle Beach when I was 15. We stayed in a condo that was right off the beach and had an indoor pool and hot tub. We would be in the indoor pool or hot tub, then run out to the ocean and jump in there as fast as we could.

We also spent a great deal of time writing messages on the beach then running up to the condo to look off the balcony to see what it looked like from up there. More often than not the writing was too small or someone had come by and walked through the message before we got upstairs.

Favorite beach memory is the first vacation I took with my husband, who was then my boyfriend. We were in Jamaica, which is one of the best places on earth, and we were at a party on the beach at a restaurant near our resort. The music was great, the people were lovely, and I remember thinking I was dancing with the guy who would one day be my husband.

I live about 45 minutes away from our Texas "beach" and had never been!! The first time I went to a beach I was in France. Come to think of it, I think it was a semi-nude beach (I know because the boys were all gaga eyed once we left). It was still pretty chilly, but the sand was fine and felt good between my toes. The water was blue (and cold) but still a million times better than our murky colored Galveston beach.

Mine is not an "ocean beach" memory, but I grew up on the white sandy banks of a cold little river here in the deep south. Husband and I used to go on Saturdays and Sundays...B.C. of course (Before C-Man, our little one)and drink beer and soak up the sun!! Oh, and my other is the Beach on the Gulf where I had my first real conversation with him, and realized that day, that he was the man I would marry, almost 15 years ago!!

I've grown up going to Cape Cod every summer, so there are TONS of memories. I think my favorite beach memory is something that still occurs - the arrival of the ice cream truck and buying a snocone that inevitably melts all down my arm!

Going to the beach as a child when I was finally old enough to understand it all. I had no idea that standing on the shore would let the waves pull me further into the water. Finally I turned to look for my family, and realized I was way out in the water. I fell into the water and got a mouth full of salt! I had no idea the water tasted that way. Just when I thought I was a goner, my uncle pulled me out of the water and carried me to shore.

Well, I don't have many beach memories....mainly because I grew up in MN and we don't own a cabin. However, when I was a nanny (something new about me that you didn't know...:)) I lived with a family in KY and we traveled to the beach a couple of different times. Once to SC and once to Bald Head Island in NC. Bald Head was fun because there were other nanny's there too. We enjoyed a night out (unfortunately...or depends on how you look at it...ha!....none of us were old enough to drink)...and since the only way to get around on the island was by golf carts we had a blast driving around in the dark and thinking someone was following us (no one was...that we know of). The memory is funny....haha! :)

BTW...can't believe you haven't read a Luanne Rice book. Hope you enjoy this one. I like her writing. Can't wait to read both of these.

Thanks again MM!!

My fav Beach memory is from my honeymoon. Not because it was my honeymoon, but because we were at a Beach. The Big Man HATES beaches. With a passion. Something about still digging sand out of his sandals from 10years ago. (Although who wears leather man-sandals to the beach? Thats what Old Navy $1 Flip Flop sales are for...). But we were on a Caribbean Cruise, and I wanted to go to the beach. So he manned up, and for 2 whole hours we laid out on the beach. Without any bitching, moaning, or eye rolls. That? Is when I knew we were truly married...which was good, since the next part of the trip included a waitress hotter than I could ever hope to be wearing a bikini smaller than I'll ever be able to wear.

My story is more funny than sentimental. In Feb we took a trip to Fort Lauderdale from CT. After all the snow this summer we needed beach, sun, sand, water, and apparently boobies. Yes I said boobies. After walking forever with all our crap which included bags, cooler, and various other beach items, we found a spot. As my hubby and I were setting up our blanket I noticed a barely 20something that obviously has not had children yet, sitting straight up with no top on. Her boobs were out there for all the world to see. I, being the good wife, pointed them out to my huuby, but tried not to draw attention to it because of our son who is 11. Shortly after boob girl left, my son said "Hey Dad, did you see the boobs on the girl that was sitting over there?"

On a side note, if I looked 1/2 as good as that girl did, I might have done it too.

I used to travel with my family to Ithaca, NY all the time when I was little. My Uncle has a cabin on Lake Cayuga. I still remember the sounds of the waves crashing into the beach while we slept at night. On the 4th of July, each person would light a candle and float it on the lake. Kind of like floating luminarias. So beautiful!

Our trip to Acadia and Bar Harbor. Had the best whale watching experience, though technically not on a beach for that. First vacation after honeymoon, and we visited every light house we could.

I am sitting in the airport heading home from the beach right now. So i have a new favorite beach memory. I spent two days on the beach in puerto rico by myself. My husband went for work and i tagged along. It was my first time i have travelled away from my kids in 4 years. It was so nice to just relax and not have to get up to do anything. It was just what i needed to get refreshed. But, i am definitely ready to get home to see my babies.

The best beach memory is of my children the first time there. It was just great to see their reactions to the sand, water and waves or the different shells that we would find.

I live in FL so it's really hard to have a fav memory. Guess it would be the week my husband & I spent there before we got married & had kids. The beach is not nearly as relaxing now as it was that summer!

Oh my favorite beach memory, its a good one. My newly wed husband and I were in Monterey CA for out honeymoon. We drove along the 17mile drive, and decided to stop at the beach to watch the sunset. As we both got out of the rental car, we shut the doors, and instantly realized we locked the keys in the car!! It was late evening by this time, and getting COLD! We waited for about 30minutes for someone to drive by, and nothing, so we decided to walk and hope that we found a pay phone. Thankfully about 1/2 a mile down the road we found one.
At the time the whole incident wasnt funny, but now its a great memory.

Spending what seemed like almost every day at the beach with my friends the summer after graduating high school. Fun times!

My favorite beach memory is when my family and I went snorkeling with dolphins when I was a kid! I never got close enough to touch one, but it was still amazing!

My favorite beach memory is seeing Okracoke Island for the first time with my best friend from college. She lost her battle with breast cancer 8 years ago at just 32 years old and I love thinking of that visit.

Favorite Beach Memory - South Haven Michigan. I must have been 9 or 10 and some friends of our family rented a beach house for the week. The waves were huge and we spent most of the day in & out of the water and bbq'ing. Everyone had a blast :)

Two popped in my mind. The first was spending spring break on the beaches at Panama City with my family when I was 16. It was the last time we went because my parents divorced the following year. The second was also with my family when I was 13 and we spent Christmas week in the Keys playing in the warm waters there. Oh, I want to do that again!!

I LOVE the ocean and therefore the beach.....don't get to one often enough! My favorite memory is probably the time spent walking the beach with my husband on our honeymoon this year.

My favorite memory is last summer my kids and I were at the zoo in Kenosha, Wi and we realized you could see the beach (Lake Michigan) from the zoo so we went to put our feet in the water and it was so much fun! Very simple but so fun and my kids were thrilled with it!

My favorite beach memory is when I was at Miami South Beach back in 2004. The water was perfect...the weather was sunny and warm. I couldn't have asked for a better few days. I had no worries and I enjoyed every minute that I was there.

"THE SILVER BOAT" is an entertaining family drama as readers see the sadness of the three sisters who must give up their long time family heritage. The story line is insightful when the tale remains anchored on Martha's Vineyard profoundly studying the impact of the loss of something sacred (not just the sisters as another character has confronted the same loss). When the siblings chase after an inane dream that even if they succeed accomplishes nothing, the plot loses its plausibility though one could argue this is a coping defense mechanism. Overall readers will enjoy the McCarthy sisters learning you truly cannot go home no matter how much you wish otherwise.
