The Lost Daughter

Got another one for you this week as promised and I’m reading it right now. The title and the cover struck me immediately and then when I read what it was about, I knew I had to share The Lost Daughter, by Lucy Ferriss with you. And then to find out that two of my all-time favorite male authors have offered blurbs for this book – Wally Lamb, and Tom Perrotta – well, then, of course, The Lost Daughter went on my list of MUST READS!

Wally Lamb says of The Lost Daughter: “From its harrowing prologue to its final sentences, I was emotionally engaged… a masterful storyteller.”

Let me tell you, the prologue in this story is OH MY GOSH, heart palpitating. I opened the book to just take a peek when I first got it, and I didn’t stop.

When Brooke’s high school boyfriend resurfaces after a divorce and a devastating loss, her world is turned upside-down as he’s the only one who knows of the secret they shared 15 years ago. Brooke now has a carefully-constructed and generally happy life with her husband Sean and daughter Megan, but now that Sean and his secrets are back in town, will he bring the truth to the surface and force Megan to confront all that she has carefully put behind her? And does he even have more secrets to tell Brooke? This is the current answer I’m dying to discover as I’m reading away!

I’m so excited to keep reading this book because THIS is exactly the type of book that I love – the ex-boyfriend coming back, long-ago kept secrets – it all makes for a juicy read with passion, mystery and secrets. I’m sure you’ll LOVE The Lost Daughter too.

Outside The Lines

Hey everyone, here’s one of my favorite authors you’ve seen on MaNiC MoMMy previously and I’m so happy to have Amy Hatvany featured again as her latest Outside The Lines debuts. I recently gave away an ARC of this fantastic book but it’s now available everywhere!

And since I last told you about Outside The Lines it has since been selected as a Target book club pick which is a huge honor so if you’re looking for a great book to buy for a friend, consider Outside The Lines … and come on, who isn’t at Target at least three times a month? Okay, or four or five!

Outside The Lines is a gorgeous book and a heartbreaker as I’ve mentioned before, but one that will have you fall in love with all of her characters. It’s the story of Eden and her search for her father, who deserted her when she was a young child because of his mental illness.

I loved this story because it’s told from Eden’s perspective when she was a young girl, and also when she is a grown woman. It also tells her father’s perspective too. This was one of those perfect-ending books, in a way that it ended perfectly, if not wrapped up in a perfect bow. Amy has a knack for storytelling and she has created a beautiful family portrait in Eden and David’s story in Outside The Lines.

About Outside the Lines:

When Eden was ten years old she found her father, David, bleeding on the bathroom floor. The suicide attempt led to her parents’ divorce, and David all but vanished from Eden’s life.

Twenty years later, Eden runs a successful catering company and dreams of opening a restaurant. Since childhood, she has heard from her father only rarely, just enough to know that he’s been living on the streets and struggling with mental illness. But lately there has been no word at all. After a series of failed romantic relationships and a health scare from her mother, Eden decides it’s time to find her father, to forgive him at last, and move forward with her own life. Her search takes her to a downtown Seattle homeless shelter, and to Jack Baker, its handsome and charming director. Jack convinces Eden to volunteer her skills as a professional chef with the shelter. In return, he helps her in her quest.

As the connection between Eden and Jack grows stronger, and their investigation brings them closer to David, Eden must come to terms with her true emotions, the secrets her mother has kept from her, and the painful question of whether her father, after all these years, even wants to be found.

Eden volunteered at the homeless shelter in Outside The Lines. I’m going Outside The Lines on this one and for you to win this book tell me if you’ve ever volunteered your time anywhere. I have always thought it would be cool to read to children at a hospital or a library because whenever I read stories to little kids I have so much fun doing it.

Her other novels, which were published under another name, are going to be republished and I’m excited to read those too, and you can bet I’ll be sharing those with you too. 

She’s an amazing author and I’m so glad to be able to share her books with you here! Amy will be going on book tour too, so check out her appearances to see if she’ll be in your neck of the woods. Sadly, she won’t be around Arizona, so I won’t get to meet her. But maybe you will get to say hi to Amy at one of these book signings and events!

Falling For Me

This is going to be a big week on MaNiC MoMMy as we’ll have THREE books for you (one will be the debut of my short story ebook on Thursday)! Make sure you come back to enter to win all three of them this week!

The first one is a memoir, and I love the memoirs I feature on here because, well, I only choose the best of the best when it comes to memoirs!

Falling For Me is by Anna David who has also written some amazing fiction including Party Girl and Bought if you haven’t checked her out before. Now I would describe Falling For Me as the cool chick’s Eat Pray Love, not that I didn’t enjoy Eat Pray Love, but Falling For Me is just a hip book. 

And you’ll love Anna from the very first chapter when she falls in love with a married man but restrains herself, although they spend two weeks together. I don’t know how she did it because the passion was definitely there. She’s a great writer. 

She gets back to NY after discovering she has fallen in love with a married man (but very good for her she didn’t act on it)! While lamenting the love that was not to be, she finds the book, Sex and the Single Girl, by Helen Gurley Brown, who was Cosmo’s editor for years beginning in the sixties. While some of Helen’s advice was less than sensible for today’s sexy single girl, Anna decides to embark on a journey following the advice in the book, in “the hope of overcoming the fears and insecurities that had haunted her for years.”

You’ll laugh at her dating antics, and some of them you'll be like ... whoa! (check out the excerpt down below!) You'll travel with Anna, get some decorating and fashion tips, learn to cook a mean roasted chicken, and read a great story when you get Falling For Me.
