SAVING RUTH by Zoe Fishman

Winner announced HERE!

I read Saving Ruth in two sittings, which I RARELY do. It is so well-written, so fluid. You know how some books, there are parts that are thrown in that are unrealistic but you buy into it for the sake of the book? None of that is in Saving Ruth. It's just a great story, so believable, so relatable, with wonderfully flawed people. I wanted to be there, spending time with Ruth during that hot summer in Alabama with her best friends, her smothering parents, and the hot guy Chris who was suddenly interested in her. Heck I wanted to be her, experiencing her summer, and having those feelings all over again.

Ruth comes home from her freshman year in college having lost 35 pounds and feeling like a new person. Her brother, David is back too, but he’s sullen and moody. Ruth is experiencing attention like she’s never had before, and everyone is calling her skinny, a word she’s never heard before. Her crush, Chris, is taking notice, David’s closest friend. David and Ruth have always been lifeguards and coaches at the neighborhood pool. Now there are secrets David’s keeping, their parents are dealing with the return of their two children from college, and Ruth is struggling with her eating problems (the problem being that she’s not eating).

A near-drowning at the pool occurs and the events that transpire afterward put the whole story into motion – Saving Ruth deals with issues of eating disorders, depression, racial indifferences, marriage problems, sibling rivalry, and family relationships.

I loved this story so much because it reminded me of being that age again, of having feelings of being free, but still being under the eye of your parents, and of finally having attention from boys and of trying desperately to feel like a woman in my own skin. Zoe Fishman took me right back to my 19-year-old self and it felt wonderful to be there, to revisit those feelings, no matter how tumultuous those feelings were at the time.

To win Saving Ruth tell me about the best summer in your life. Mine was definitely the summer before I turned 20 when I was working at a swim/tennis club and dating lifeguards (yes, plural, but there was one I was particularly in lust with!), and this book took me right back there!

THE FIRST HUSBAND by Laura Dave

Winner announced HERE!

Laura Dave  is one of my most favorite authors. Her books sit on my special shelf. Yes, I have a special shelf! She’s also been extremely generous on MaNiC, having given away a boatload of her books here. She’s one of those authors that goes out of her way to make sure her readers know how much they are appreciated, and she’s been especially helpful to me in my quest for publication! I’m always thrilled to host her on MaNiC (which you also may note the change in name: BooKiNG with MaNiC!)

The First Husband came out in paperback today and it got a fun makeover in the cover department. It looks like candy, doesn’t it? Don’t you want to lick it? Yummy! And guess what? It is EVEN BETTER INSIDE!

What I love about Laura’s male characters is she makes them so endearing, you don’t know who is going to be the main catch! Laura’s the type of author who makes you fall in love with all of her characters. They’re so real and likeable, even the ones you’re not quite sure you’re supposed to like.

Back-of-the-book:

Annie Adams thinks she has it all. Her longtime boyfriend, Nick, is on the verge of becoming a successful film director, her travel column is nationally syndicated, and they've got a great dog. Her life finally feels like it is falling into place. Until, out of nowhere, Nick announces that he's reconnected with a woman from his past and he's moving out.

Reeling from Nick's exit, Annie stumbles into her neighborhood bar and finds Griffin, a down to earth chef who seems to be everything she didn’t know she wanted. Three months later, they’re married. And Annie finds herself in a small Massachusetts town -- completely unmoored and wondering if she’s picked a life on the rebound. When Nick returns, wanting a second chance, Annie's stuck: truly torn between her husband and the man she may have been meant to marry.

I’ve asked this question before but I’d like you to tell me who in the CELEBRITY world would be YOUR PERFECT FIRST HUSBAND – can be an actor, singer, or other random famous person. Tell me who that one ideal famous person is, and you will be entered to win THE FIRST HUSBAND!

Also, if you have NOT checked out Laura’s other books, GET TO IT! London is the Best City in America and The Divorce Party are absolutely positively AMAZING books!

Do NOT forget to go back and check in on all the other terrific books I’ve got up on the blog! There are about six still up for grabs! And you’ll have till through the weekend, then I’ll probably start drawing some names for winners! Get going! Lots of great books to win! There are fab books from these authors available NOW:

Don’t miss ‘em! I just gave you ALL OF THE LINKS! Click on them here and it’ll take you right to the posts so you can enter with ease! (That’s what she said!)

As always, thanks to the awesome authors and publicists for sharing their books. US / Canada participants only. I never receive money for these posts, but man, if I did, I’d be rich by now, huh? It would be awesome if you could share this blog with your reader friends too - it's the best way for your friends to find out about these great authors!

THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME by Allison Winn Scotch

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

The Song Remains the Same
By Allison Winn Scotch

I've had practically all of Allison Winn Scotch's books on MaNiC and I'm very excited to bring her latest here to you today!

Allison Winn Scotch’s The Song Remains the Same is similar to her other books as it is an absolute page-turner-cannot-put-it-down read. And with this one, this title couldn’t be more on target. Woven throughout are the lead character’s “The Best of Nell Slatery’s” playlist and Scotch chooses these token songs brilliantly to set the tone for each chapter and pulls specific lines from each song to bring to life the point she makes in the scene.

Nell is one of two survivors of a horrific plane crash and what I love about this book is Scotch does not dwell upon the crash, because that would freak me out. Nell loses all of her memory and when bits come back, or from what she’s told, the one thing that comes most prominently in her mind is the fact that her famous artist father deserted their family when she was thirteen. Nell becomes fixated on this and sets out to find the mystery behind his reasons for leaving.

Aside from her father leaving them, she also discovers secrets about her husband, whom she’s not really sure about from the moment she wakes up in the hospital. During the whole book, there are constant surprises that will intrigue the reader. You’ll seriously be like, “Whoa, I did NOT see that coming!”

An interesting cast of characters carries along Nell’s story, including a likeable reporter who’s out to help Nell find the answers to her reclusive father (or is he?), her sister Rory and her mother Indira, who seem to be keeping way too many secrets of their own in order to protect Nell, and the other survivor, Anderson Carroll, a TV star / B-list actor, who I can’t place in real life, and want to know who Allison crafted him after. Peter, Nell’s husband – well, you’ll see for yourself! And then you’ll also get to meet some surprise guests in The Song Remains the Same that I can’t share with you here or Allison may kill me! This is why you’ve got to read it ASAP!

One thing I was curious about was we get small details on what Nell was like prior to her losing her memory, but I wondered if the plane accident triggered her fixation with her father, and if before that, was she a normal functioning happy adult, not seeking closure about this part of her life? One may never know, unless Allison Winn Scotch were to write a prequel to The Song Remains The Same? Hmmmm.

SEE! You GOTTA READ IT! And one lucky winner can get a copy here by answering this question: What song will bring you back to a moment in time like THAT? For me, the song TAKE YOU HOME by Phil Collins always brings me back to Junior year in high school and to that one boyfriend, and that one party, and that one dark room upstairs at that one party... If I hear that song, I am immediately transported back in time. Actually, that whole album will take me back to that boyfriend and that time we had together. How about you - what song places you back in time to a certain moment that is UNFORGETTABLE? Tell me and you'll be entered to win The Song Remains the Same!

Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win those books as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! One entry per person as always! Please include an email address or a uniquely identifying user name when entering to win!

JEFF, ONE LONELY GUY by Jeff Ragsdale

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

Jeff, One Lonely Guy
By Jeff Ragsdale

Everyone has felt lonely at one time in their lives and Jeff Ragsdale is not alone. Ha. That’s funny. Because he is alone. Or else he would not be the author of the book I’m sharing with you on MaNiC right now, would I?

Jeff is actually One Lonely Guy, or he was at one time. I’m not sure if he’s still lonely but in October of 2011, he posted a flier in NYC that looked like this:

He received hundreds of phone calls, then the flier went viral via the internet and Facebook and he began to receive thousands of phone calls from people all over the world – he got calls from pimps looking to hook him up, and from lonely women, and from other sad people like him, others who just wanted to see how he was doing. He got calls from depressed 13 year old kids too. He answered as many phone calls as he could and returned hundreds of calls. He spent hours and hours on the phone, connecting with people.

That’s what he needed to do.

Jeff, One Lonely Guy is a book that shares many of the conversations, texts and voice mails that Jeff had with the people who called him. It’s an interesting story because interspersed with the glimpses of the people who contacted him, Jeff shares his own story - about the intense relationship that had ended between he and his girlfriend Kira, and about his lonely childhood where he felt he was not loved. He shares stories of very bad times in his life, and this book is a tragic tale.

But in Jeff, One Lonely Guy, we see a world where there is hope. Where there are kind people, looking for something more than there is – where people long to make a connection that may not exist any longer – the human connection that we can't get when we hide behind screens and are too busy to take the time to just stop and tell someone hello.

In fact, I just called Jeff.

Because I wanted to know if he was still lonely. I hope he calls me back. Except I think he’s not very lonely any longer. And that makes me happy.

(I thought this was going to be the end of my post....... BUT.....it continues .....)

Guess what? It's now about four hours later and as I was watching Glee, my phone rang. I sprang up, "It's JEFF!" Jeff, the lonely guy, actually CALLED me back! He and I talked on the phone for about twenty minutes. I felt like I was talking to someone with a lot of heart, and a person who really did care. Like if you called him out of the blue, he would LISTEN. Truly. He told me he never thought of himself as "being a listener" and he was a good listener. He said he never thought he'd be helping people, but he is. He said the saddest part of this whole journey is when 13-year-old boys and girls call him as if he is their last hope.

I asked Jeff what would he do if he woke up one morning and he never got any more phone calls. It's doubtful that'll happen. What he's hoping to do with his phone number is to turn it into a non-profit helpline, which I think is an amazing idea. I hope it works out for him.

Of course, I wanted to know if he's still lonely. While he's not in a relationship, he is "dating and meeting people." In fact he said he is probably going on a date this weekend with someone he's met through the flier. And for the future, he will be working on a memoir. He's such an interesting person, I'm sure a memoir will be a hit. I know I could have talked to him for a much longer time, and he was a kind and courteous guy - even asked me questions about my family! But I was sure he had MANY phone calls and texts to return so I told him I'd let him go!

Go like Jeff's Facebook.

Here's Jeff's awesome website where he updates it pretty much daily with calls he still gets. It's really cool.

The Oprah Blog even posted about Jeff and his book.

Check out this video to learn more about Jeff's journey!

What I love about this book is that Jeff wasn't putting up the flier so he could tell people HIS sad story. I think he did it so he could talk to others and try to make them feel better, even if he didn't initially know that would happen. It was all about making the connection. I know that when I'm feeling down, doing something for others and not wallowing in self-pity always makes me feel less sad.

If you’d like to win a copy of Jeff, One Lonely Guy, tell me about a time when you’ve felt lonely. For me, it’s always, ALWAYS when we first move to a new place – so when we moved to Philly, and even when we moved back to the Chicago area from Philly, because although we had friends there, it was a new time in our lives, and we were moving back there with kids. And then, of course, my loneliest was moving to AZ.

THESE GIRLS by Sarah Pekannen

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

These Girls
Sarah Pekkanen

I've loved Sarah Pekkanen since she came onto the writer's scene with The Opposite of Me and she once again sealed it for me with her sophomore book Skipping A Beat. So when her third book, These Girls, came out, of course, I had to get my hands on it. I zipped through it with a frenzy and fell in love with these girls like you wouldn't believe.

There are three main characters in These Girls and it's such a great book because they're all equals - not one character takes the stage. You've got Cate, who has just been promoted to features editor at Gloss magazine, a girl who doesn't have to try to maintain her size 4 figure, but who feels like she has to prove her spot at her job. She's also keeping a secret that might very much jeopardize her new position.

Then there's beloved Renee, who is everybody's friend, a size 12 curvy girl, my type of girlfriend, the girl at the party everyone knows, everyone wants to be friends with. She's trying awfully hard to win the job of beauty editor, but has doubts because of her weight, and falls into some serious trouble when she discovers a quick weight-loss tactic. But will the fact that she's losing weight be the end-all to her woes, or will it just cause further problems? She's also dealing with the fact that her parents are having problems of their own, and a mysterious new family member reveals herself to Renee to stir up even more doubts about herself and her family.

Abby - what can I say about Abby - Abby just wants to be loved and have a family. She's escaping from something terrible, but even she's not exactly sure what she's running from - a secret from her past? The fact that she had infiltrated herself into the family she was nannying for just a little too much? She runs to NY to her brother, Trey, for help.

Of course, there's Trey, hottie Trey. Renee dated him briefly, but things didn't quite work out the way she had hoped, and now there's a teeny spark brewing between him and another character. I love how Sarah brings in just enough romance to keep the pages turning, but not too much to take away from the story.

The way Sarah Pekkanen brings these three women together is a perfect story of friendship. All three are in need of something they each don't know how to get. I think they're all looking for acceptance of themselves, and acceptance in their jobs, in other women, in the men they choose to be with.

As Sarah herself has said in interviews, her stories always have surprises in the end, and These Girls' ending did surprise me a bit. I may at first have wanted a little bit of a different ending, but after I closed the book, I thought for a few minutes. I thought about what the story was about. I thought about WHO the story was about. I realized the title of the book is THESE GIRLS. And then I knew that it was the most perfect ending for another wonderful book by Sarah Pekkanen!

ALSO--If you've never checked out Sarah's SHORT STORIES, if you have a spare hour during the day, check out ALL IS BRIGHT and LOVE, ACCIDENTALLY -- you will absolutely LOVE them -- they are just 99 cents each and they are so very sweet! Don't miss out on these two awesome stories!

To win a copy of These Girls, tell me a BEST FRIEND story - it can be from last week or from kindergarten, but something memorable!

THE WEDDING BEAT by Devan Sipher

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

The Wedding Beat

I was really psyched for this one because guess what, it’s like chick lit but written by a man and from a man’s point of view! Yay! A man should have to search for love too!

The Wedding Beat by Devan Sipher tells the classic New York story of boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy assigned to write article about girl’s wedding.”

I’ve not yet had a chance to read it, but early reviews say that fans of Emily Giffin (MY FAVE!), Jennifer Weiner (another great!), Lauren Weisberger and Jonathan Tropper will love this book. And another one of my favorites, Laura Dave, said this of the book: "A fresh and fun take on finding (and committing to) love."

How can you go wrong with a line-up like THAT!

So the author, Devan Sipher, is a real-life wedding columnist, and has written about more than one thousand weddings. That's a LOT of cake! Do you think he gets to eat cake at all those weddings?

He has written for the New York Times “Vows” column. So he’s got a TON of insight on weddings. You KNOW he’s slipped a few real secrets into his fiction, which is what I love about books like this one and Devil Wears Prada – secrets from the industry are bound to be included.

Here’s the blurb:

Gavin Greene isn't only a hopeless romantic, he's a professional one: He writes the wedding column for a prize-winning newspaper, covering A-list parties from coast to coast.  But there's a thin line between being a hotshot reporter on assignment...and being a single guy alone on a Saturday night.

Everything changes on New Year's when Gavin meets Melinda, a travel writer with an adventurous spirit.  A moonlit walk across a Manhattan rooftop seems to seal the deal, but she slips away.

Gavin crisscrosses New York City to find her again. And he learns there's something worse than losing the woman of his dreams—having to write an article about her wedding.

Read some of Devan’s articles and more about the book here:

You can go to The Wedding Beat’s Facebook page here:

If you’d like a chance to win The Wedding Beat, tell me something that happened at a wedding that was interesting or exciting. I’ll tell you one: The first wedding Mr. Manic and I attended after we had our first child, somehow, he and I ended up in an empty CLOSET at the hotel. Uh-huh, OH YES WE DID!!!!!

Your turn! Share a fun wedding story and you’ll be entered to win The Wedding Beat! And later this week, I have two more books to share – These Girls by Sarah Pekannen and Jeff, One Lonely Guy so please come back! These are both amazing books too.

Also, I think I may announce winners like I did the last time - list them on a separate blog post – probably all of them at the end of the month – let me know if that was easier for all of you, because it sure was easier for me! And don't forget to check the last two books to enter them if you haven't already - You Are What You Wear, and also How To Eat A Cupcake are still up for grabs!

HOW TO EAT A CUPCAKE by Meg Donohue

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

Hey everyone! I'm trying to get better at posting books because I've got a LOT to offer this spring, but I would LOVE it if you could share my blog with your bookie friends as well! Don't think of it as "If I share MaNiC's blog with my friends, that's less chances for me to win!" Think of it as GOOD KARMA and your chances to win will double! I'd love it if you could pass along my URL to your book lovin' friends in your life, at work, on Facebook, anywhere! And I promise I have so many great books coming your way ... Like this YUMMY debut ...

Who doesn’t LOVE cupcakes? Yeah, thought so, and with a book titled How to Eat a Cupcake, well, that just begs to be read, right? My only problem when I first picked up Meg Donohue’s debut novel was that it wasn’t a scratch ‘n’ sniff book! THAT would really be the ICING on the cake! Ha, I’m on a roll here, aren’t I?

Free-spirited Annie Quintana and sophisticated Julia St. Clair come from two different worlds. Yet, as the daughter of the St. Clair’s housekeeper, Annie grew up in Julia’s San Francisco mansion and they forged a bond that only two little girls oblivious to class differences could—until a life-altering betrayal destroyed their friendship.

A decade later, Annie bakes to fill the void left in her heart by her mother’s death and a painful secret jeopardizes Julia's engagement to the man she loves. A chance reunion prompts the unlikely duo to open a cupcakery, but when a mysterious saboteur opens old wounds, they must finally face the truth about their past or risk losing everything.

You can begin your culinary delight by diving into this excerpt here!

If you’re now craving cupcakes like I am, here’s an exclusive cupcake recipe for the readers and fans of How to Eat a Cupcake: MEYER LEMON CUPCAKES by San Francisco pastry chef Alyce Shields.
And if you’d like to win a copy of How to Eat a Cupcake tell me what your favorite flavor cupcake is! I probably would choose a lemon with cream cheese frosting or red velvet cupcake. And if you ask me HOW to eat a cupcake, I would say IN THE CLOSET SO I WOULDN’T HAVE TO SHARE WITH ANYONE!!

Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win it as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR by Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR
Jennifer Baumgartner

Hey everyone, we've got company in town so I'll try to get another post up this week for books and I probably won't get to choosing book winners until this weekend so please bear with me on this! But in the meantime, here's a great self-help style guide that you'll love! Hope you enjoy! If you love Project Runway or any of the fashion shows on TV, or TLC's show What Not To Wear, this one is RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY!

If you’re like most women, you aren’t exactly thrilled with your wardrobe, and if you are, then wonderful for you and you can go click onto another web page right now.

Good. Glad to see you’re a normal woman and that you’re still here.

Do you often go into your closet, that’s filled with tons of clothes, some with tags still on, some without tags, some items that have never seen the light of day, and you think, “I’ve got nothing to wear?”

Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner has written a book that’s part fashion guide, part self-help that will guide you through your closet and your head to help you figure out your personal style and why you choose to wear the things you do.

From color, to size, to showing too much You Are What You Wear will help you discover the psychology behind why you choose what you choose to wear. This guide will also help you uncover the reasons why you shop and what you shop for – are you searching for particular labels, are you searching for items to cover yourself up? Are you trying to stay in a certain decade? Are you trying to be someone you’re not?

From chapters that discuss closets that are overflowing, dressing for work, mom jeans, dressing your age, avoiding mirrors (guilty!), buying more than you need, being bored with your look, there is seriously something in this guide for every woman.

You Are What You Wear will change the way you look at your wardrobe and yourself. It can kick up your self-esteem and make you happy about your appearance in a way you’ve never thought possible!

Jennifer Baumgartner PsyD, author of YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR, was always fascinated by the internal reasons for our clothing choices. Having had a history of working in fashion and trained as a psychologist, she decided to blend both of her passions to create a new way examining what we wear, the Psychology of Dress. In addition to running her wardrobe consulting business, InsideOut, Dr. B specializes in the treatment of mood, anxiety, substance, and eating disorders. Visit Dr. Baumgartner’s website at: www.psychologytoday.com.

If you'd like a shot at winning this book, tell me what the OLDEST ITEM is in your closet and why you refuse to get rid of it! I just recently cleaned out my closet (like in January), and my friend made me get rid of a bunch of stuff, but the oldest item I have is a shirt I actually USED to wear to my second job out of college (in 1992!) that I NOW wear to bed at night. I can't believe I used to wear it WITH A SKIRT!!!

Tell me about your oldest item and you'll be entered to win YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR!!!
