YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR by Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner

A winner has been selected for this book. Check here: Winner Announcement!

YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR
Jennifer Baumgartner

Hey everyone, we've got company in town so I'll try to get another post up this week for books and I probably won't get to choosing book winners until this weekend so please bear with me on this! But in the meantime, here's a great self-help style guide that you'll love! Hope you enjoy! If you love Project Runway or any of the fashion shows on TV, or TLC's show What Not To Wear, this one is RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY!

If you’re like most women, you aren’t exactly thrilled with your wardrobe, and if you are, then wonderful for you and you can go click onto another web page right now.

Good. Glad to see you’re a normal woman and that you’re still here.

Do you often go into your closet, that’s filled with tons of clothes, some with tags still on, some without tags, some items that have never seen the light of day, and you think, “I’ve got nothing to wear?”

Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner has written a book that’s part fashion guide, part self-help that will guide you through your closet and your head to help you figure out your personal style and why you choose to wear the things you do.

From color, to size, to showing too much You Are What You Wear will help you discover the psychology behind why you choose what you choose to wear. This guide will also help you uncover the reasons why you shop and what you shop for – are you searching for particular labels, are you searching for items to cover yourself up? Are you trying to stay in a certain decade? Are you trying to be someone you’re not?

From chapters that discuss closets that are overflowing, dressing for work, mom jeans, dressing your age, avoiding mirrors (guilty!), buying more than you need, being bored with your look, there is seriously something in this guide for every woman.

You Are What You Wear will change the way you look at your wardrobe and yourself. It can kick up your self-esteem and make you happy about your appearance in a way you’ve never thought possible!

Jennifer Baumgartner PsyD, author of YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR, was always fascinated by the internal reasons for our clothing choices. Having had a history of working in fashion and trained as a psychologist, she decided to blend both of her passions to create a new way examining what we wear, the Psychology of Dress. In addition to running her wardrobe consulting business, InsideOut, Dr. B specializes in the treatment of mood, anxiety, substance, and eating disorders. Visit Dr. Baumgartner’s website at: www.psychologytoday.com.

If you'd like a shot at winning this book, tell me what the OLDEST ITEM is in your closet and why you refuse to get rid of it! I just recently cleaned out my closet (like in January), and my friend made me get rid of a bunch of stuff, but the oldest item I have is a shirt I actually USED to wear to my second job out of college (in 1992!) that I NOW wear to bed at night. I can't believe I used to wear it WITH A SKIRT!!!

Tell me about your oldest item and you'll be entered to win YOU ARE WHAT YOU WEAR!!!

Remember, MaNiC MoMMy is aiming to feature great books each and every week this year, and you’ll have a chance to win it as well! Please stop by often AND MAKE SURE TO CHECK THE PREVIOUS POSTS as I’m now posting new books more than once a week! Open to US/Canada residents only, and thanks to all the participating authors and publicists for providing the books.

Check back on this post in a few days to see if you’ve been chosen, and as long as there is not a highlighted winner’s name on the top of the blog post, you may enter to win any of the previous books being offered. One entry per person as always! Please include an email address or a uniquely identifying user name when entering to win!

My oldest item is a t-shirt that I got in high school. No matter how many times I sort through my closet for Goodwill, I never end of getting rid of it.

I still have a few shirts from high school...they still fit and look nice so I keep them.

I have a college sweatshirt (20 yrs ago) that is all ripped at the sleeves and kinda crappy but its huge and comfy and my go-to item when I am sick or just in a blah mode. yes clearly I need this book.

hmm...oldest item in my closet is probably my college sweatshirt. it's about 9 years old at this point, and when you wash it it still has that "grimy" look to it...and i could care less!

Oldest item -- a black dress that I made as a Halloween costume. I wore it a lot in college and now, it's just there, b/c you never know when you might want to dress like a witch, right?

A hideous neon green shirt that I got from my mom's college when we went to visit for a reunion. I was like 8, and obsessed with the baggy, 90's style shirt. It now only covers to about my midriff, but I still love it and refuse to get rid of it.

My oldest item is a "Go ugly early" sweatshirt from the campus bar from my college days. It was a 21st birthday gift. 15 years later, it still gets plenty of use. Of course now that my oldest is learning to read, I may have to retire it to the back of my closet so I don't have to come up with any explanations. :-)

I have a Espirt dress that I wore on New Year's Eve 1998. I will probably never fit into it ever again, but I love it and remember how damn good I looked in that dress that nigh. Melissa Rem

Wow let's see my oldest item would be a jacket from early 90s compoets with shoulder pads but wow I Paid a lot for that brand and can't seem to part with it. And perhaps it's matching too short skirt.

I have a pair of cut-off jean shorts that belonged to my brother. He wore them in the 80s. They are the most comfortable, most revealing shorts. They are about 2 washes away from disintegrating.

I have some old beat up tshirts from high school. They are full of holes and about 3 sizes too big, but I will never get rid of them!

I'm 26 now, so I would say the oldest item I have now is from favorite bright orange gap hoodie that I got when I was in 5th grade. I was 10 or 11. It is so comfy, and it still fits. I just can't bring myself to get rid of it. I still wear it when I'm lounging around the house or when I'm exercising.

I can not get rid of old college t-shirts, no matter how hard I try!

I'm pretty sure I still have a shirt from 7th grade (1993) somewhere in my closest, but I also have an old swimming club t-shirt that belonged to one of my uncles when he was little (1970-ish) that I still wear every once in awhile.

I have a couple of old items...my letterman jacket from high school, which I will never get rid of, just because I worked so hard to get it in sports. And also a t-shirt from my basketball days in highschool also. That year, we all had our names put on our shirts that we wore during warm-up before games. But that's it! I try hard not to be a pack rat, and if I haven't worn it in a year...it's got to go!

Carie Casey said...

I have a t-shirt I got made for my hubby when we were teens so it's almost 20 yo. I don't wear it out or even to sleep in. It's embroidered so it's itchy. I keep it for sentimental reasons.

1980 AND JUST RECENTLY WORE IT TO AN 80'S RETRO PARTY ALONG WITH MY

I have an old sweatshirt from college. I got on a trip my friends and I took to Vegas. The sweatershirt has holes all over the place and is very faded. I have not gotten rid of it only because every time I see it, a smile comes across my faciing remembering the amazing time we had! I love it!

Aside from my letterman's jacket (circa 1995-1997), I have a pair of OLD jeans (circa 2000), that are all ripped, but I love them still. :)

My oldest item is a sweatshirt from my sophomore year in high school (00). It's so worn that it's not all that warm anymore, but it's still soo comfy!

The oldest items in my closet are 3 DVF wrap dresses that belonged to my mom. They don't fit me (right now) but, hello, they're DVF, and still totally cute and fashionable. Plus, they were my mom's, so I can't part with them.

lucy872 said...

My oldest item is a t-shirt from college...where I graduated in 1994. It in no way can fit me, but for some reason I won't part with it. And I'm one to clean my closet every season, but I keep that ratty old shirt. I could say I sleep in it, but it's too tight to be comfortable!

BrendaL71 said...

Hmm, I had to think about this one. but the oldest things I own are probably comfy shorts and old oversized shirts that I only wear around the house and are no longer exceptable for public viewing. I went through some size changes, mostly up in size but some things are oversized and no longer flattering.

Jeffie T said...

I have a t-shirt from 1999 that is the softest, most comfortable shirt in the world. It's my go to shirt for just lounging around the house.

I still have this itty bitty strawberry bikini bathing suit from when i was a year or two.

obviously i can't still wear it though! LOL

This is hilarious! In the mid 80s I had a jump suit by Naf Naf. Remember that brand? It was super trendy and I always got compliments on it. Little did I know that my mom saved it after all these years!!! Now it's so old, I'd hate to get rid of it, but what the hell am I supposed to do with it?

The oldest item I own and refuse to throw away is my brother's 7 up shirt from when we were kids. I have no clue why I love it so much. It's nothing great to look at, but I smile every time I wear it. -Lauren Royall

The oldest item in my closet is my boyfriend's wresting sweatshirt from 6th grade..he's more of a pack rat than I am. But I'm incapable of getting rid of shoes. You never know when you'll need to wear silver sparkly 4 inch heels you wore to prom 15 yrs ago :)

My New Kids on the Block T-shirt from third grade. It doesn't fit but I just can't get rid of it.

this book is perfect for me since i tend to hoard clothes even though i don't like them and most don't fit. i think my oldest item is a sundress i got in 1998 when i was in college. it's purplish gray with lots of flowers and looks cute on me.

I have a sundress that I bought in 1992 from the Victoria's Secret catalog, while planning my honeymoon wardrobe. That engagement didn't last, but the dress did. I still wear it as a swimsuit cover up, and won't get rid of it because it reminds me of my good decision to not marry that man!

Honestly it is shoes that I have that I never get rid of. I have a pair of doc Marten knockoffs in my closet from high school but I don't feel like parting with them!

I regularly clean out my closet, so I know clothes in there aren't very old. I do hang onto shoes though. I've got an awesome pair of Chaco's that I bought when we lived in CO 12 years ago. Those puppies have seen some use and are still as comfy as when I first got them.

I clean out my closet often...but I know I have some old jeans that I keep for when I paint and I have some really old t-shirts that I can't toss because they have sentimental value. I actually made several of my old t-shirts into a t-shirt quilt last year so now I can keep them forever but have room in my drawer for new ones!

I have a old JCrew dress that I wore in college..circa 1996. It's so short and I'd never wear it again. But it brings back a lot of fond memories.

I have a t shirt I got in 8th grade actually. It's really disgusting, but it's just a sleep shirt. It's nothing special, so I really have no idea why I haven't gotten rid of it!

We've moved a lot so I don't keep anything that we don't use but I have a pair of pale pink Banana Republic pants that we eloped in fromm2005. I can't get rid of them for sentimental reasons & I'm insanely hoping I'll fit into them again after 3 c-sections. Highly doubtful at this point!

BorderMoon said...

My oldest item is a tweed hacking jacket I got when I was twelve and taking riding lessons. I still have it, because I love the tweed so much; it stays in a cedar chest because frankly its shot under the arms. But it still...sorta...fits. Not bad when you consider I'm now 62, so I've had the jacket for 50 years!

faithspage said...

I still have my "skinny jeans" from just a few years back, I refuse to get rid of them. Because I will be that size again, please let me be.
But anywho...I have a pair of the velour track pants, they were a lovely shade of gold, now they are a ugly shade of tan (looks nude) and also velour tends to get worn spots, and that looks sheer. HAHA

I have a little pink robe that I got at the thrift store when I was probably about 8 years old. My Granny would buy myself and my cousin crazy outfits from thrift stores to play dress up with and for whatever reason, I still have it. I have no idea why.

I think the oldest thing I have is a green shirt my Mom sent me for my 19th birthday, when I was away at college. Not only was it from my Mom, but I made out with a really cute guy in it, so I've always just held on to it. It was my St. Patrick's Day shirt for many years. Now it just lives in the back of my closet.

Well this is easy. The oldest thing in my closet, which will never, ever fit me again, is 39 years old. It is my wedding dress. And the reason I can never get rid of it is, because it is my wedding dress. Neither one of my daughter wore it/wanted to wear it, but I just can't get rid of it. Someone will have to some day for me.

my dads thermal shirt and over shirt-- he passed away unexpectedly at the age of 50 I was 26 (now 40) and just moved back to California to return to college--hardest time of my life and I just cannot let go of the shirt that helped me survive college---at the time I did not know how I was going to survive my dad's death --little alone college--the shirts are a reminder than I can do anything and all I need is my own self-confidence to make it.
