MaNiC MoMMy'S ViRTuaL BLoG FoR BLooD DRiVE

Save LIVES - Win a TRIP TO FLORIDA!

Welcome to 2009 everyone, and yes, this is how I want to start off the New Year, with another Virtual Blog for Blood Drive, and this year, like last year, I am asking you to donate blood anytime during January 1, 2009 through February 28, 2009 to enter to win amazing prizes.

I donated my pint yesterday at my favorite Heartland Blood Center!

Here are the details and a quick explanation of what happened last year for those of you new to the scene:

In January 2008, on a whim, blogger Manic Mommy took her three kids and three of their friends with her while she donated blood. Since it was such a cinch with six kids in tow, she wanted to see if she could get others to donate and she spearheaded what she believes to be the first ever virtual blood drive. She convinced 35 blog readers (some of whom had never donated blood in their lives) to donate blood. In all, approximately 100 lives were saved through their combined efforts, and gift cards and various other gifts were awarded to winners. An anonymous blogger even matched the prize money to buy gift cards, and people whom had never donated blood now donate regularly every eight weeks.

This year, Manic Mommy’s Virtual Blood Drive will run from January 1 through February 28, 2009. And it gets even better for those donating in 2009. Aside from additional other fun prizes which will be announced throughout the contest, one grand prize RANDOM winner will receive luxury accommodations for six days, five nights at Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort* (www.sandestin.com). To enter, simply go to your local blood bank and donate blood between January 1 - February 28, 2009. Have your photo taken IN THE CHAIR while you are donating blood and send your photo to manicmommy@comcast.net. Include your name, city, state and email address, and what inspired you to donate. Photos/inspirational stories will be posted every Sunday during the contest.

Additional IMPORTANT information:

Do not let the blood bank tell you that you can't have your photo taken because you are allowed to. You may not be allowed to have a photo taken of them inserting the needle, but there are no laws prohibiting photo taking while donating blood. Best way to show proof is by you being in the chair with the needle in your arm, obviously, but if they give you a hard time, a photo in the donation center, with your BE NICE TO ME, I GAVE BLOOD sticker, and other ways to show proof will be accepted. Use your good judgment!

Blood relatives and my immediate friends are NOT eligible to win the grand prize trip to Florida, however they are eligible to win the other prizes awarded.

If you donate twice during the contest (this means you have to donate like TOMORROW to be able to donate again in the timeframe), then your name will be entered twice into the contest.

If you cannot donate blood for some reason but would like to donate a monetary gift toward contest prizes, please email me at manicmommy@comcast.net.
I would be forever grateful, and any small amount is very much appreciated! Most likely these donations will go toward a second-prize or third-prize Visa or MasterCard gift card, much like what was done last year. Or, if you work for a company and think you may have a prize that might inspire others to donate, please feel free to let me know! It's all for an excellent cause - LIVES!

Like last year, for everyone who donates blood, I will put forth my own money toward the second place prize, which will be anywhere between one to three dollars per person who donates (at my descretion as the contest progresses).

More information will follow about the incredible GRAND PRIZE TRIP to Sandestin's premier getaway resort spot: Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort, but in the meantime, take a peak at their FABULOUS website: www.sandestin.com.

Every Sunday I will post the pictures and the names of those of you who have generously donated. When you send your photos in, please email them to manicmommy@comcast.net and include your full name, city/state and email address. Include a short paragraph on why you chose to donate.

Last year I mentioned that ONE PINT OF BLOOD SAVES up to THREE LIVES and one pint can save up to FIVE BABIES, but my mother, WHO DONATED YESTERDAY AS WELL (Thanks MOM!), reminded me that donating blood doesn't equal 1 pint saving three lives. Donating blood saves FAMILIES.

Take that into consideration and please meet the Manic Mommy Virtual Blog for Blood Drive Challenge!

It not only will save lives, it could mean a terrific Florida getaway to Sandestin Golf & Beach Resort as well!

Any questions, please leave them in the comment section and I will answer them there! Thank you all!

*Accomodations include two-bedroom, full kitchen and living room; black-out dates and restrictions apply; does not include travel.

Question for you or anyone else who reads this. I couldn't give last year b/c I was pregnant. Now I want to give again but am nursing. I've read conflicting thoughts on giving blood while breastfeeding. Any knowledge about this? I'm thinking that if I give toward the end of the drive, I should be fine since I plan to wean Ella by the first week of March. Have you or anyone else given while nursing? Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!

I've been waiting and am so excited for this kick-off, hoping to see a better turnout than last year. I will have to ask them if I can donate or not. I go for a treatment Jan 12th. They'll probably want a detailed history on me. Ha That may take until Feb!

Seriously, though, I doubt I could donate, but I can surely be a "needy supporter" since I am an end recipient with at least 1000+ donors needed for *1* treatment, and I get a treatment every 4 weeks. Well, Manic, this means I've got to get my page all writen. Too wordy here.

B - I've donated before while nursing, and it was fine for me. I had no issues with milk production at ALL or iron levels or anything while nursing, but then again I drank a TON of water constantly and ate spinach salads most days, frequently with salmon on it :) It was fine for me, but I know everyone is different.

And Steph - I'll get something put up in the next couple days! :)

Just made my appointment for next Friday. I do Automated Red Cell donations every 4 months. Everyone should ask if they are eligible.

Here's some info -

Automated Red Cell Donation

If you decide to donate blood, you may be a candidate for Automated Red Cell donation, also referred to as "double red cell donation." This process of collecting red blood cells allows a donor to give twice as many red blood cells as a typical donation would collect. This is a great option if you are not able to come to the donor center often, but you want to make your donation go twice as far when you donate.
An Automated Red Cell donation (also referred to at 2RBC) is collected by apheresis. Apheresis is a process that allows you to donate only the blood components that are needed for transfusion (in this case red blood cells); the rest of the blood is returned to you. This volume replacement helps donors feel comfortable post-donation. Each donation is performed using donation material that is used once and then discarded. The process takes slightly longer (30-40 minutes) than a whole blood donation.

Happy New Year Manic!... It has been years since I donated and I have been so waiting for your drive. What I watched you accomplish last year was amazing!!!This year, I'm NOT watching - I'm DOING!!! I need to really work on my iron levels for a few weeks (holidays were tough!) so I think I'll try the 3rd week in Jan. If my levels are too low, I'll still have some time to "pump it up"!... off to eat another box of raisins!

You are the bestest! (stolen phrase from my 5 year old)

Christine

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Thank you guys SOOOO MUCH!!! And if any of you are worried about your iron levels, CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR IRON!!! Also, read meat and dark greens.

Another thing to consider if you're concerned that your iron might be too low--have them check your iron BEFORE you fill out all the forms - they will do that for you.

And hey, start taking an iron pill to PUMP IT UP! : )

And please, please, if you have a blog, share this link with your readers, or email this info to your friends and family! THank you!

Michelle said...

The link is up on my post :)

Oh and I've had iron issues this past year a few times... chocolate covered raisins are what they keep suggesting to me, but I just eat a handful of raisins before I leave the house and then a handful before walking in and it does the trick for my iron (in addition to normal eating).

Oh and the double red? They're more picky about height and weight. Women have to be 150 vs 110 and a min of 5'8 (I think?). I can't quite do it, but I console myself with the knowledge that I'm a neonatal donor, so I get to save babies :)

OH! And sign up for the Four Season's club or whatever they have at your local donation place, and they'll give you fun prizes each quarter!

Jennifer said...

Michelle is right. You do have to be a certain height and weight. I'm 5'9" and according to my driver's license, I'm 150 pounds and we all know that's the truth! ;) But if you do reach the requirements,it's a great way to go. And it's also a great excuse to get out of the house for an hour. "Sorry honey, but you've got to watch the kids while I go out and save lives!" ;)

I'll have to start taking my iron pills cuz I'm ALWAYS too anemic, by like 1%. And this year, if they still don't take my blood, I'm going to take pictures to prove I tried!

Tamara said...

Are donors outside of the US eligible for the prizes?

I will still donate as I regularly donate blood, but I would love to be eligible for the prizes too :)

Lexie said...

I think its great that you're doing this again!

I am unable to donate... but have passed the link to your site to a few friends.

Here's hoping for another successful blood drive for you! I loved checking out all the pictures last year!

Feisty Irish Wench said...

I missed my 2 month mark in December to donate, and was planning on going sometime very soon to do so. Thanks for some extra motivation!

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Tamara--your blood is needed everywhere, not just in the US! And if you win the trip, if you can get to Florida, then that's all that matters, right? So I would say if you're in Canada, you're eligible. Somewhere else really far, far away might be a different situation though.

Stephanie J. Blake said...

Awesome, MM! I can't donate, but will be rooting for you!

Erin said...

Awesome! I can't give bloog (something about mad cow and being in England in the '80s.) However, Hubby can, but rarely goes, even though he is O+. Sending him out, telling him not to forget the picture.

And sorry for asking if I missed it, but do you have a button or picture I can post on my blog. Advertise, advertise!!!!

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Erin, I do not have a button--I tried to figure out how to get one/make one, but here is the permalink if you can please post it on your blog:

THANK YOU ALL FOR DONATING AND SPREADING THE WORD!!!

I am looking forward to getting your photos of you donating soon!!!

Manic. Just a couple questions. How much chocolate? Because, I. Eat. Chocolate. It's one of my food groups.

And raisins... Who said that? Just eating raisins before the donation ---- how anemic are you? Just wondering.

Time to call Red Cross.
Happy Donating everyone!

zolafan said...

Hi Manic - Kate's friend Donald (zolafan) in Houston here - thanks for the email reminder to head over here for the blood donation contest. I got rid of my blog, but I will post your link on my Facebook.

thanks for the info from OMG Becky - I did double red cell donation for the first time back in Sept., when I went to give blood post-Hurricane Ike. I'm eligible again here in Jan., will have to wait until after I run the Houston Marathon on the 18th to give.

The 40 mins. was no problem, I had a mini-TV at my chair to watch ESPN!

Nikki K said...

Hello! I just found your blog through a link of someone else's. I'm already scheduled to donate blood the end of the month. I'm sooo taking my camera. This is a great thing you're doing. :)

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Karla with a K--not sure how much chocolate, but I'm sure the more the better!

zolofan--I knew you'd be good for a donation!

And Nikki--THANK YOU! Looking forward to getting those entries in from you all!

Sarah said...

I donated today with my coworker. They were BUSY (that is GOOD!) and I felt bad asking them to stop and take a photo (plus my coworker was way on the other side of the room) - so I've got AFTER photos; bandage showing, sticker showing & proudly holding the vitals card they give. :) I'll email all the info for both of us later. :)

Cheryl said...

This is wonderful! Thank you for giving everyone two months to get it done. I try to give at my local Red Cross every eight weeks, but last October I didn't pass the hemoglobin minimum. Phooey. After that, I ate a lot of raisins, molasses, and took a daily multivitamin with iron, and passed with flying colors the next time I went in, which was December 23. So now I'm not eligible to donate again until February. So thanks for making it last long enough for me to enter! :-)

Grateful for Grace said...

What a great idea! I don't think I can donate, though? If I'm 110lbs and nursing a baby??
If I can... I'm in.

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Grateful--Oh, I'm not sure--does anyone out there know the answer? If you don't get the answer here, call 1-800-Give Life and they'll tell ya! Thanks for wanting to try though! I think you can if you're nursing, but not sure on your weight. You're a skinny minny!

: )

I donated today at the blood drive at my son's high school. I've been so anemic that I haven't qualified for over a year now, but this time I made it! (Only by a point, but I made it LOL.) I also got a picture because the drive was sponsored by PTA, and I'm responsible for getting pictures at all PTA events.

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

DG MOMMIE--are you sending me your photo!?!?!? And does DG stand for Downers GROVE!??!?!!?

YAY for another DONOR!!! YIPPEEE AND THANK YOU!

I'm sending my photo in a few minutes. And DG are my initials. :)

What a great thing you're doing! I will be participating!

Michelle said...

I was wondering if donating plasma counted??

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Michelle, you're in the chair at a blood bank, you've got a needle in your arm, you're donating something from your body that is saving someone's life, it counts.

Michelle said...

Damn! I didn't take a picture...but I have a poke in each arm and there is still guaze on it....lol

Maybe I will get there again this week! :)

Jessie Weaver said...

I am ticked off!! I gave blood today and had someone take a picture on my cell phone but I forgot to save it!! Sniff! I can take a picture of my arm wrapped in the red cross tape and stained with iodine? Hehe. At least I got to give blood! Yay!

Hi. I just found out about this contest today. I donblood on the 27th but didn't take a picture of myself doing it. Am I still eligible for the contest?

MaNiC MoMMy™ said...

Songbird, if you can get to the location where you donated and get the paperwork showing you donated on that date, you can be entered to win one of the gift cards, but not the Florida trip. I'm sorry you didn't hear about the contest until now! I have done my hardest to get the word out about it! I would love to still do a shout out letting everyone know you donated on Sunday if you can email me with your info on why you donated and where you live, and your blog, though? If you would like? You can email me at manicmommy@comcast.net. And if you can get that paperwork I can enter you for the gift card portion of the contest! : )

Hi “MaNiC MoMMy™”! I just saw the post on Mary Beth’s blog, the other day (as I was catching up) regarding your blood drive. Great idea! I reposted it to my awareness blog, Care-Aware™ (http://care-aware.spaces.live.com), today.

Good luck, everybody! You’re already winners! :)

PS Here’s the URL/permalink for my blog-posting on it (I’ve got a lot of awareness stuff going on/coming up, right now, so it might not be at the top of pg. for too long): http://care-aware.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!DBE452D9D129BF48!315.entry

Oh, man! I just donated blood last week here in our little town but I didn't find out about this until today. I wish I'd thought of taking a picture but I didn't. Darn! I'd love to win that giveaway. Our family needs a vacation. I'd send my hubby over (he was watching our four kids, including 2 year old twins when I went) but we have to wait for them to come here we're in such a small town. Oh well, maybe next time. Great cause, though!

Great idea! Can husbands do the donating? I may be able to get him to go since I am borderline anemic I don't know how well I'd do donating blood...Saw the link RT via twitter, nice template looks familiar ☺

It’s a wonderful idea to conduct a blood donation camp. I observed blogger conduct a prize contest between the donors. Also I found one grand prize random winner will receive luxury accommodation. It is very impressive. Apart from this article I learned Springdale clinic is the right place to take treatment on mental issues.

Welcome to our xxx video escort agency where we unveil our xxx. We are an agency who cares very much about our reputation and do everything to maintain our standards to the very highest level. After many years in the business we like to think we know what we are doing and have got everything right and co-ordinated. We are now much more of a regional escort agency covering the North West of England and have amassed a collection of beautiful and dedicated professional companions who love what they do. We have learnt over the years that the best xxx video escorts are the young ladies that enjoy what they do and treat it more as a vocation or hobby.

As we are such a high profile and reputable Porn video we receive an inordinate amount of applications from prospective escorts from throughout the region. However, we can afford to be very selective and go for those ladies with outgoing personalities and social skills as well as good looks. Beauty is however in the eye of the beholder, so consequently we aim for a good balance of physical attributes. Above all we are looking for ladies where escorting a true extension of their normal lifestyle and are comfortable chatting to and mixing with a variety of other people.

When payday loan enjoy what they do then they are naturally enthusiastic and attentive as they are also getting pleasure out of taking care of their clients’ needs whatever they may be. They are genuine people persons who are highly sociable and fun to be with. Ladies who often go out with friends and clients in their locality are brilliant for clients visiting the area, as they are knowledgeable and have a good idea of the best places to go to suit the client they are with.

Secret Babes a xxx video escort agency you can trust

We know it is not always easy to find a reliable xxx agency that you can implicitly trust. We try to be as honest as possible. We like to give a good description of our ladies as well as display photos you can trust. There is nothing worse than building up and anticipating the arrival of the xxx video escort of your dreams, for someone entirely different to what you are expecting turning up. Then it’s back to the drawing board to find a genuine reputable agency you can rely on. There is more to reliability than being genuine about the authenticity of girls on the site. We offer a prompt service where outcall is involved. We have drivers who know the area and road conditions who endeavour to deliver your dream escort to your door or whatever meeting place you designate, such as a restaurant or bar. Our service is also as discreet as possible with our professional staff holding discretion and confidentiality in high regard. We also take great care in advising you of the right companion for the type of date you require as some sex toys have different strengths and specialities, unless you have your heart set on one particular lady. Our philosophy is that the client’s wishes come first and it seems to work for everyone concerned.
