Books: The Opposite of Me and Skipping A Beat

Author: Sarah Pekkanen

Website: http://www.sarahpekkanen.com/

Winner Announced Here

Sarah Pekkanen may be one of the relatively newer voices on the scene but she’s also one of the hottest. Her first book, The Opposite of Me, was so well-received, it caught the attention of author Jennifer Weiner. Word of mouth and a little contest to help spread the author love, and The Opposite of Me was noted in People, Redbook, USAToday. Sarah was all over the place, and after reading The Opposite of Me, it was no wonder. I fell in love with Sarah’s writing. Truly stories I wanted to tear through, but didn’t want to see end.

Since I read The Opposite of Me so long ago and didn’t write a review then, I'm just going to give you the back-of-the-book blurb:

Twenty-nine year old Lindsey Rose has, for as long as she can remember, lived in the shadow of her devastatingly beautiful fraternal twin sister, Alex. Determined to get noticed, Lindsey is finally on the cusp of being named Creative Vice President of an elite New York advertising agency, after years of 80 plus-hour weeks, migraines, and profound loneliness. But during the course of one devastating night, Lindsey’s carefully-constructed life implodes.

Humiliated and desperate, she flees the glitter of Manhattan and retreats to the time warp of her parents’ Maryland home. As her sister plans her lavish wedding to her prince charming, Lindsey struggles to maintain her identity as the smart, responsible twin, while she furtively tries to put her career back together. But things get more complicated when a long-held family secret is unleashed that forces both sisters to reconsider who they are and who they are meant to be.

And here’s my personal review for Skipping A Beat:

Usually when you love an author's first book, you don't expect to be blown away by her second book, but with Sarah Pekkanen's Skipping a Beat, that's exactly what I was. Blown away. From the very first page I was swept up into Michael and Julia's story of how they were less than privileged high school sweethearts turned millionaires by his DrinkUp flavored water. Yet, because of her father's gambling habit, Julia requested a pre-nup before she and Michael were married so that she could be responsible for her own money and have a secure life unlike her own mother who lost everything because of her father's gambling habit.

How was she to know that her own husband would become a man worth millions, 70, to be exact, and then unexpectedly die, for four minutes and eight seconds, but then come back to life and find money meaningless? And want to give it all away? Michael does exactly this, but in doing so, wants to prove his love to Julia at the same time.

How can she trust that he's not throwing away their lives, when the past few years all he's been focused on was building his empire, and now he wants to trash it all and finally work on their marriage? Fortunately, Julia's got a thriving party planning business of her own, but will it be enough if she decides she cannot stay with Michael now that he's going to give it all away? And will she want to stay with Michael after the years he's been absent in her life? He's asking her for the next three weeks to prove his love to her. Can she give it to him? And what will she discover in those three weeks?

Skipping a Beat had me on the edge of my seat, and my own heart was skipping beats as I plowed through this book, anxious and excited to find out what would happen at the end. A couple of things I predicted would happen, but they were good things, and made for a happy ending despite some surprises that did have me tearing up while reading as well! Loved, loved, loved this book and it catapulted Sarah Pekkanen to my top five list of favorite authors, right alongside Emily Giffin!

There's a lady here in town that makes a peanut butter fudge cake that I get every year for my birthday. Totally rocks. As for the opposite of me...I'd have to say my husband and my daughter. Awesome people...but laid back with amazing wisdom and street smarts that I know not of. :)

My favorite would have to be my grandma's watergate cake! It's so so so good! As far as my opposite is someone who is relaxed light hearted and easygoing! I'm a crazy uptight worrier, lol but hey I'm a work in progress! Both these books sound great and truthfully are sitting in my amazon shopping cart for the next time my husband and I send off for books :)

I'm dying to read both of these books!

My favorite dessert would have to be a warm brownie with a scoop of ice cream!

I'm pretty shy, so the opposite of me would be someone very confident and outgoing

I love all sweets, so it is very hard to pick one dessert. I can tell you though that I DO NOT like cooked fruit, so like with Peach Cobbler or Apple Cobbler I don't eat the fruit, I like the bread topping and I can not eat any part of a fruit pie, like Apple pie. YUCK!

The opposite of me, is my mother. She is short, I am tall, she is quiet, I am not; but if it wasn't for her, I would not be the woman I am today.

MaggieDu said...

My favorite dessert would have to be my grandma's apple pie. She used to bake it for me on my birthday.

And the true opposite of me is my twin sister. We're identical, but she is very girly girl meets endurance events. I'm very laid back and casual and would rather go hiking than run.

I actually added The Opposite of Me to my next purchases from Amazon a few weeks ago, because I love books involving sisters.

Sarah Lashua said...

My fovrite dessert is any kind of cake with buttercream icing. The opposite of me would be someone who is really quiet and not a Type A personality. The opposite of me would be someone who is spontaneous and takes huge risks.

Amanda Leigh said...

My favorite dessert is ice cream cake.

The opposite of me is someone who is quiet and doesn't watch television.

ok my favorite dessert is brownies with nuts!! Just love them.
The opposite of me would be very outgoing and positive and energetic! Cuz I'm not!

I love chocolate. Chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake, chocolate anything. The opposite of me? That's a good question but I don't think my husband would like her. LOL!

Tough one - I love anything chocolate but I think my first choice would be warm apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and maybe a drizzle of caramel. Simple but I don't get to eat it often so there you go. The opposite of me would be someone who is a bit pushy but gets whatever they want. Also she would not be fun at all.

Emma S. said...

My favorite dessert is a well made creme brulee or red velvet cake. As for my opposite, I'd have to say my boyfriend. I'm a book worm, while he's addicted to TV and watching sports. I am extremely organized and maybe slightly OCD. He's more of a slob when it comes to keeping things clean.

Meg said...

Home-made Apple Pie. Of course, I also find that to be a perfectly acceptable breakfast option as well.

And the opposite of me? High-powered lawyer, single, working 80+hrs a week. Exactly who I was on track to become before I found myself.

kathygold9778 said...

My favorite desert is a good piece of birthday cake and the oppsite of me would be...hmmm...a goth chic? LOL!

Crystal said...

Fave dessert: red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting, yellow butter cake with chocolate frosting, or plain old white cake with buttercream frosting. but please, not all at the same time! LOL

And like most, the opposite of me if my fiance. Where I have book smarts, he has street smarts. I am the pickiest eater alive, and he will openly try anything just once. Opptimist vs pessimist, fearful vs fearless, books & puzzles vs comics & video games. OH! cake (how it should be) vs just the bread. I always have to make 2 tiers, his of which NEVER has frosting. SMH!

I'm quite the type A personality. So I guess anyone who is type B would be my opposite.
My favorite desert is something from Thailand. It's a sweet sticky rice with coconut milk that you eat with mango slices. Mmmm.

The perfect example of the opposite of me would be my sister. She is wild where I am conservative, she is risky where I am safe, she is FUN where I am serious! But, I love her for it all!

How do I pick just one dessert? I do love cheesecake so I'll go with that one! I think my boyfriend is the opposite of me in some ways...social when I feel quiet and want to stay home, calm when I'm stressed, doesn't let the little things bother him and able to get up early to work out!

Cheesecake especially peanut butter or chocolate varieties are my favorite dessert. The opposite of me is someone who goes out and gets what she needs no matter the consequences...takes chances because I am too cautious.

janabailey said...

I am not really a dessert person, I much rather have bread and cheese. But when I do have dessert it is plain vanilla ice cream with my dad's homemade hot fudge sauce. It is really good.

If you want the opposite of me - look at my sister. We are 100% opposite. The only thing that we have in common is we are the same height. So different, but still my best friend.

Dulcibella said...

My favorite dessert is ice cream. Dulce de Leche is my current favorite, but usually anything very chocolatey is what I go for.

The opposite of me is a petite, sweet, girly girl. I am tall, blunt/direct and sensible. I don't think I am UN-feminine, but not so much into the girly stuff like makeup, nails, fussing with hair, etc.

StephRochelle said...

I'm not a huge sweets person, but I love me some pineapple upside-down cake. If you've never tried the pineapple upside-down cheesecake at Cheesecake Factory, do it now! Delicious!

I'm a bit shy sometimes, so the opposite of me would be someone who is fearless and doesn't hold back one bit.

I have so many favorite desserts. Apple Crisp with vanilla ice cream is probably my fav.

The opposite of me is most likely someone really put together. Who has awesome fashion sense and wears accesories and heels out everyday instead of me in my jeans and 10 year old hoodie.

So boring, but I love vanilla ice cream. A banner night would be that with an oatmeal raisin cookie! As for the opposite of me? That would be someone who isn't tolerant of other's beliefs or backgrounds! Everyone has something to add to the world!

Mint chip ice cream with Magic Shell on top is my all-time favorite dessert. I'm a happy-go-lucky girl, so the opposite would be a stressed out ball of anger.

My favorite desert is anything that someone else buys, serves and cleans up (I swear it, ANYTHING), and the opposite of me is quiet, reserved, relaxed, laid-back, disorganized, messy, serious, cold, spiteful, selfish, judgmental, easygoing and I don't know the word for the-opposite-of-profane. :)

My favorite dessert is the Creme Brulee cheesecake from Cafe Eccell in College Station, TX. Oreo cookie crust, a layer of chocolate mousse, cheesecake, and creme brulee on top. It's absolutely amazing! As for the opposite of me, that would be someone like my sister. She's incredibly athletic whereas I am not so much, she's very outgoing and I can be a little shy. Even though we're pretty different, we're still incredibly close!

I would have to say my favorite dessert would be an ice cream sundae with bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream. It's good any time of the year. My opposite would be someone who is a morning person, loves coffee, and is a very A type personality.

I'm a sucker for ice cream and since I gave it up for lent it's almost painful to write about. Having six sisters of my own to constantly compete with and rely on it's hard to think of an oppossite of me, as the youngest of the brood I've always considered myself a mixture of my family.

Apple pie - for breakfast..yummy with coffee! I would have to say that my sister and I are opposites in many ways. She's way more into planning ahead and being socially involved than I am. I need to see what the weather does to plan anything (riding a motorcycle demands this).
