Book: Annie Begins

Author: Michelle Toth

Website: http://www.anniebegins.com/

Winner: Melinda S.
You guys are going to love this debut book by Michelle Toth. Annie Begins tells the story of 29 year old Annie Thompson, who is brilliant in business, yet disastrous in relationships. It’s the dawn of the dot-com boom, and Annie is determined to make it big. But her single-minded focus on work is put to the test when the man of her dreams announces that his wife is divorcing him, and designates Annie “the best listener he knows.” Suddenly she’s juggling his mixed signals and her entrepreneurial ambitions—not to mention a complicated friendship with her new supervixen of a roommate.

Annie's pursuit of Mr. Tall, Dark and Barely Available takes a turn for the unexpected when her young, terminally ill cousin, April, makes it her mission to find Annie a husband. But the fiancĂ© April picks is definitely not the kind of man Annie would have chosen. Now, Annie has to ask herself what exactly she wants and values most deeply in a man—and in herself.

So, to win Annie Begins, let’s make this really fun – since the character April in the book tries to find Annie a husband, tell me how you found your current or previous BF, partner or husband? Blind date, match.com, were you set up by your best friend, did you meet him in a bar like I met Mr. MaNiC? … Doesn’t have to be long-winded – Short and Sweet tells it best!

Thanks for being so wonderful with all of these answers. I can’t tell you how much I’m enjoying waking up and reading all of these every day! Hope you’re having fun too!

Michelle’s Bio: Michelle Toth divides her time between New York City and Boston, where she serves on the board of directors of the non-profit Grub Street Writers. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and Harvard Business School, Michelle works as the director of talent development for an investment management firm.

Chris' parents and my parents had been friends for decades, but he was a boy and I wasn't allowed to play with the boys. Later in life, my mother learned that he'd divorced and she suggested he call me. I wasn't interested because I knew I was his rebound girl. He's been rebounding with me for 17 yrs.

I met my husband online. It was about 12 years ago and a friend and I were cruising the profiles out of boredom when we came across one who said his hobby was "looking at myself in the mirror, saying hey you, you're a stud." We HAD to get a picture of this stuck up jerk, so we asked him for one. When we didn't say anything to him after, he kept talking to us until finally we answered back. Turned out he lived up the street and we ended up meeting. Been together ever since. He is the funniest person I have ever met :)

We were in college. I was dating another guy. Tim came up to me in the hall one day and asked if I was attached. I said I was, but didn't tell him we were having problems and broke up about a week later. Meanwhile my ex boyfriend told Tim he had this girls class ring and was planning on pawning it. Tim was telling my ex that he liked a girl who had just turned him down. Long story short they eventually found out they were talking about the same girl...me. Tim asked me out, and got my class ring back from my ex and we have been married 16 years.

I had known my DH about 5 years...he was the brother of a friend. We ran into each other at a bar one night and after making small talk we found out we were both recently single. Later that night he asked me to dance...it was a slow song. While on the dance floor, he planted a kiss on me out of nowhere! Talk about the BEST KISS EVER!! We've been together ever since and just had our 16th wedding anniversary. :) Nanette N.

This book must have been the story of my life before I met Jeremy I was a walking case of disastrous relationships. I babysat for 2 little boys from the time they were 2 and 4 and am still babysitting for them today, although much less often. Their mom became a close friend and confidant of mine through the years. She would become so discouraged with my terrible relationships that she set me up on a blind date that did not work out. A year later she tells me about their PeWee Football Coach. She said, "He loves kids and loves football just like you, give it a shot." Somehow she convinced him to go on the blind date with me and a year and a half later we could not be happier.

My guy and I have a nerd version of a "when harry met sally" type relationship from our college days. The first time we met each other, we didn't like each other (I was being disruptive while he was trying to study). The next time we met in accounting class we became friends. Then when he went abroad and came back, we fell in love.

I was 19 and home from college for the weekend, and a guy friend of mine from high school got me to go to a party at a friend of his house. It happened to be my now husband's parents' house out in the country. Instant attraction on both sides at first sight. What's funny is that our dads went to high school together and did some crazy pranks together, and Zack and I grew up hearing about each other's Dads. We went to high schools in the same town, and have even established that we were at some of the same parties in high school at the same time, but never saw each other. God's timing, I guess! 9 years together, 6 years married, and 3 kids later, we're still going strong!

I met my boyfriend 7 years ago at a club i use to frequent. I was having a much needed girls night out since my "then" boyfriend was at a No Doubt concert. I saw him when he walked in and thought..hmm he's kinda cute. 3 Tokoyo Teas later somehow we started talking and dancing and the next thing i knew we were exchanging numbers and making plans to see each other again. Things were already bad between us, so meeting Nikko's dad was the little push i needed to end that relationship :)

I met my husband at one of the last places I ever thought I'd meet a guy. Myspace!
I'm not one to date strangers I've never met before, but I was really sick one night (late 2007) and had been cooped up in my house, bored for 3 days. I was on Myspace and received a random message from a random guy asking me how I was. A short bantering later, and we graduated from e-mail to AIM chat and then to the phone. Within an hour of talking to him on the phone, I knew he was "the one". Sounds corny, but I felt like I could talk to him and be myself- something I had never experienced with any other guy. A week later, we had our first date. We have now been married for almost 6 months. I still love him just as much as that day we met on Myspace!

When I was in college a friend of mine invited me to go with her and a group of her high school friends to a play. She wanted me to go along since an ex boyfriend of hers was going and everyone else was coupled off. She didn't want it to seem like a date. When we showed up the ex boyfriend was really sweet and funny and I sat next to him at the play. A month later we started dating, a few months after that I moved in and three years later we were married. Today we have been together for 10 years and married for 7 (Happy Anniversary to me!).

I was a fresh-out of the bottle redhead in her first year of college. He was a one-foot out the door unknown senior whom I randomly sat next to at a football game. When the crowd sat down at the end of the first quarter, I scooched over to make room. His response: "I don't bite."

And yes, I fell for that.
Hook, line, and sinker.

What can I say? I was a freshman.

My husband and I met at work kind of. I worked in the Florida office while he worked in Rhode Island. He would come down on buisness and I always thought that he was the greatest guy I ever met. I thought his wife was the luckest girl on earth. We started talking and realized that we were both going through divorce. After that we were hanging out with some mural friends from work. After a few drinks and being alone for five minutes we kissed. It has been almost 7 years and I couldn't be happier!!!

We moved next door to each other in our apartment complex two days apart. I had seen him walking by, but being a dork, didn't say anything to him for about 3 weeks. Then one night I was trying to sleep and he was drilling holes in his wall. I went over and yelled at him. It was love at first fight.

Later I asked to borrow his drill to do some work in my apartment, he ended up fixing things for me and I thanked him with Lemon Sugar Cookies. He's the only person I make them for now.

I knew he was the one, and this June we'll be celebrating 10 years of wonderful marriage :)

James and I worked together for about 6 months and flirted constantly. He's from Northern Ireland so his brogue was always a source of banter as I couldn't understand him half the time. We both broke up with our significant others a short while before the company sent everybody to Morocco for team bonding. Needless to say we almost kissed in front of the entire company while laying by a fire in the Atlas mtns. ( I realize how cheesy this sounds!)

Needless to say we remained colleagues for the rest of the trip and a few weeks later went on a date and have been together ever since!!! :-)

My fiance and I met during the summer at our community college. I went to the break room to waste some time waiting from my grandpa to pick me up and he was sitting with one of my friends from high school. I talked to her for a while and then he interrupted asking whether she was going to introduce him or not. We exchanged names (I can't remember what he said his was, nor the fact that he says he looked like a hobo since he was growing out his beard), but I do remember our last exchange. He asked me whether I was 12, like Cindy (since both she and I are 5' tall and very young looking...side note: I still get carded). Very matter-of-factly I answered that no, I would be turning 19 in a couple weeks. So I asked how old he was. To which he responded: too old for you. PFFT!!

Long story short, we shared our first kiss 4 days later and became a couple a week and 1 day after we met. We've been together ever since. It'll be 4 years this July.

Well us being the huge fans we are complimented him on his hat at the end of the night he asked my sister for her number and the next night we went to his house to play some beer pong. I was reserved and not very talkative as I was coming out of a bad relationship. We hung out with him one more night the week they were here they went back and I went on moving in to my tiny studio apartment. I got a call from him a few weeks later asking me if I wanted to hang out at the beach with him and his friends I went and we have been together since then, almost 3 years.

In the street, literally. Me & my girlfriends walked (too young to drive) all the way to his house so we could appear to be casually "hanging out" in the street in front of his house. Then we went in and played a board game. What can I say? We were 15 :-)

I went to a party at my best friends (now ex) fiance's house and my (now) husband was there also. It was a set up that only I was unaware of. Apparently everyone else knew. We dated for a month then broke up for three years. We randomly met on myspace one day, started talking and have now been together for 5 years and married for 2 1/2 and have a beautiful baby to show for it

I wouldn't say I actually found James, my husband. We were kind of forced to be around each other, as we had met on a van on our way to summer camp many many years ago.

I met my hubby on my 18th birthday, he was with two friends and I was with my two friends and we basically picked them up on a street corner and took them back to our hotel room. Sounds very tawdry and dirty but it was all very innocent, I swear! It will be our 18th anniversary in May.

I wonder how many times we were at the same event...

My husband is my best friend's cousin. We'd know each other since we were like 10, we even graduated from high school together, but we never really talked until their grandfather's funeral. (I know, I know!) We ended up talking more at Easter dinner and then started dating that summer.

I met my boyfriend in a math study abroad program in Hungary. We then got together after falling in love on a trip to Puerto Rico a year later. Pretty random, but I guess you end up with a pretty perfect fit when you pick from such a self selecting group!

My boyfriend and I have been dating for 4.5 years. We met in high school, went on a date and didn't like each other at all. About 7 years later, we ran in to each other at a bar, pretended we just got engaged for free champagne and have been together since!

We had met a few times in Chicago, but I didn't really remember him until I went on a canoe trip with some friends who put us in the same boat. He ended up driving me home after our float down the river & we wound up dating. He married me exactly 5 years to the day after our first date :)

I met my husband through my mom. they worked at a bank together, and I, being a broke college kid, would come in from time to time to get money from my mom. Eventually, he got up the nerve to ask my mom if he could ask me out. she said "no, you're too old". Once he showed his drivers license to prove he was only 4 years older, she relented. Been married for 15 years. LeslieGC

I met my hubby because two nosey friends decided to set us up. One of my best friends from "back home" and one of her co-workers set my husband and I up just 6 days after my ex left me for Colorado (Dope!). Looking back it was the best break-up I've ever had!

I met my husband in high school, but we were just casual friends. I always thought he was cute, but he was cool and I was sort of a nerd -plus he had a girlfriend in high school. Then, my first summer home from college, his buddy wanted to go out with my friend, so they sort of "arranged" for all of us to go out one Friday night. Well - I had gotten a little "less nerdy" and my husband thought my biting sarcasm was hilarious and we ended up hitting it off. He no longer had a girlfriend and we ended up dating all summer. Then when I went back to school, we decided to stay together. Well...20 years later we are still together - and I am still as sarcastic as ever!

I met my husband in High School - I was a sophomore and he was a junior. I wanted a boyfriend who could drive and since he had his license he was in the running. Our first date was at a friend's sweet 16 party at the local Eagles Club - Married 11 1/2 years and 2 beautiful children - We basically grew up together and still manage to find things to laugh about - ahhhh, true bliss!

I met my current love, and love of my life, at the Planet Hollywood pool in Vegas, of all places, sippin' on a fair amount of Vodka sodas. I was on a girls trip and he had just been stationed in Vegas with the US Air Force. He and one of my girlfriends knew each other and he came to hang with us for the day. He ended up staying the whole afternoon and evening with us and he and I have been together ever since. Moving up to Vegas to start our life together in a couple months :)

I met my current boyfriend in college at the best university, Penn State University. Every year, Penn State has a 46 hour dance marathon (THON), which is the biggest student-run philanthropy in the world. We meet at THON 2006 where I was a dancer, and he was my moraler, which is basically a person in charge of making sure the dancers are happy by getting them food or giving back rubs.

My husband and I met online back when there was only AIM, no dating sites. I loved his screen name and wrote him to say hi. 6 hours later (on dial up none the less) we got off of Instant Messenger, a year later we were married and will celebrate our 10 year anniversary in a couple months!

I had known the older, kinda creepy stuck in the 70s Dale for 15 years. He and is mom were members ofthe church my family and I attended. When I had my accident in Memphis my parents brought me home to Louisiana (the small southern town where I was born and raised). Immediately and then unrelentingly Dale wanted to visit. Mama got tired of saying no and he came over one afternoon, and then again the next week. Pretty soon biweekly visits were the norm and by the time it turned into daily appearances by him we were smitten. I always tell folks that I had to get brain damage before I would date my husband (not stated in his presence) but it's kinda true- I didn't know what a good catch looked like.

9 (and a half) years ago I started college. At my first big frat party complete with jello shots, kegs and a nasty backyard I met my guy. Thank goodness he was not a frat boy and was just there because his roomataes dragged him. Perhaps not the most romantic way to start a happily ever after but it's sure worked for us!

I met my fiance on match.com, however if you ask him how we met, he'll just tell you "in college" since I think it embarrasses him that we met online. He was new to town for grad school so he filled out a profile just to see, and I did it as a joke with my best friend...little did I know that seven years later, we'd be getting married.

We met in college - I was waiting in my dorm's lobby for a group of people to go to a party. A couple of guys strolled by looking for people (girls) to take back to their party. My girlfriend and I figured one party is as good as another, so we blew off the other group and went with the 2 guys. I ended up marrying one of those guys and we will be celebrating our 38th anniversary this year!

Ok, not a story I proud of how I met my ex...indirectly really, I was working at a mall and visiting a guy that worked at another store and he had my ex on the speaker on the phone. My ex used pick up lines over the phone, but I did not know at the time he had been to the store to visit the guy I was visiting and had already seen what I looked like. Brenda L B

I met my husband in the gentlemen's club where I was working as a dancer. It was his last weekend in CA before he moved to FL where he had already bought a condo in a highrise on the intercoastal.

That night after we talked for hours, he asked a friend if he could rent his guest room for a while because "I met a girl and I want to see where it goes." We got engaged within 6 months. We've been together now for 9 years, married for 8. And he's still renting out that condo he bought.

My husband and I actually met on the internet. It was back in 1998 before the big boom of online dating and match making websites. I had never dated before, no boyfriend, no first kiss, nothing...I was 18. I wasn't looking for anything other than people to be email buddies/chat buddies with. I happened upon my husband on a bbs (bulletin board system). We just really hit it off. When we didn't talk I'd always be thinking of him. We started "dating" in April of 98 and he came to visit in July. This was back when you could meet people at the gate. When he walked off the plane it was like my best friend was coming home to visit. I knew in that minute that I would one day marry him. Christmas Eve 99 he proposed and we have now been married for almost 11 years.
